Setting up Port Forwarding for a Minecrafta Minecraft Server

Preliminary information
In order toTo host a Minecraft server on your router you will need to allow incoming and outgoing
internet traffic on your router to a specific port (Think of your router as a shipping dock and the ports
as the areas where cargo is unloaded from different ships). To understand how to enable this traffic
for a Minecraft server, it is important to define a few terms.
● IPv4 address: The internet address of a computer
● Service type: Specifies the protocol used to send traffic on the internet

Accessing your Router’s settings

1. Open the Windows command prompt app, type “ipconfig”, and press enter.

2. Take the value to the right of “Default Gateway”(Gateway” (Figure 1) and put it into the search bar
of your web browser. (If there are any issues with loading a webpage, contact your internet service provider.)

3. Once on the web page, log in to your router using the username and password boxes.
TypicallyTypically, the username and password for most routers will be “admin” and “password”
respectively. (If these do not work, you can google the login credentials for your router. For example, if I have an
Arris router, I wouldwill google, “arris router login credentials”.)

Add a Port Forwarding Service

1. Navigate to the setting page in your router that has the label “Port Forwarding”. (Figure 2)

2. Make sure port forwarding is enabled and click add new service or entry.

3. Enter a name for your new entry or service (Ex. Minecraft server).

4. In every box that has the label “Port”, enter the value 25565.

5. Select the service type to be UDP/TCP.

6. Using the results “Default Gateway” from Figure 1, take the value to the right of the IPv4
address and put it inside the box, labeled “IPv4 Address”.

7. Save your service/entry.

8. Having completed all these steps successfully, you have now setup a port forwarding service for
Minecraft.
