ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to know what are the impacts of the new normal

in online learning system. Does it have positive or negative result? It is new for

the most of the aspiring Entrepreneurs to study online. Have you ever wonder

what might happen if we learned through online, instead of being in the

traditional way? We don’t know. We are clueless. That is why we conducted this

study not only to know them but also to learn what are the changes that we could

face in this era.

We conduct a survey that measures how many students are gaining a

knowledge through this online system. What do you think? Are they really

gaining knowledge? Are we? This should be a study to know what is going to

happen to the aspiring Entrepreneurs when they learned in online system. What

might happen if we learned through online, instead of being in the traditional

learning.

CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

With the recent pandemic, the world has come to a pause, and as much

as possible has moved into the digital world with online learning. Some students

in ABM dream of starting their own businesses even while they are still studying.

One of the goals of information technology application in education reform is to

improve the student learning outcomes. The results of student learning are a

criteria evaluation accomplishing academic goals of the learner. Up to now, there

are two often ways to evaluate student performances: summative assessment

and formative assessment. The formerly estimated results through scores at the

end of the course or evaluation forms, the later estimated results in the process

student learning, to consider many aspects. The field of entrepreneurship has

long been divided as to whether individuals are born entrepreneurs or if they can

become one. Although it is true that some people are gifted with traits or skills

that are generally associated with entrepreneurs, it appears increasingly clear

that these entrepreneurial skills and competencies can be developed, in

particular through education (Kuratko, 2005; Neck, Green & Brush, 2014).
Entrepreneurial education opportunities have in fact literally exploded in recent

years. In addition to traditional

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR OF ABM STUDENTS IN ICCT COLLEGES SAN
MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

classroom offerings, apprentice entrepreneurs now also have Web-based

education options that have been greatly enhanced. However, where classroom

education assessments have been the subject of many studies, online training

has been scarcely documented (Arbaugh et al., 2010).

Due to the active development of information and communication

technologies the 21st century has provided ample opportunities for education.

Today's media and interactive technologies provide a powerful platform for all

those who want to learn, thereby strengthening the concept of “learning is for

everyone”. Advanced institutions focus on their flexibility and openness towards

students (Alfonso, 2015). The entrepreneurship courses, which are held in the

form of distance learning, are based on the Internet, via e-mail or special

websites and applications. The process of distance learning has gained

popularity in the world, because many students do not have free access to

information, due to certain factors (e.g. distance or high tuition fees). However,

sometimes students still need to attend colleges or other academic centers to

take accreditation exams (Ng'ambi & Bozalek, 2015).

The concept of “open education” has become popular together with the

development of distance learning. Open education is a teaching philosophy

based

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR OF ABM STUDENTS IN ICCT COLLEGES SAN
MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

on the flexibility of access to education in equal conditions for all students. This

concept focuses on the student himself, who determines what he wants to learn,

as well as how, when and where he will learn, how he will evaluate his studies

and determine the direction of his career (Peter & Deimann, 2013; Ibatullin &

Anisimova, 2017).

The concept of open and distance learning has established in the world

pedagogy. It has become the subject of much research. This concept began to

gain popularity when daytime institutions agreed that distance education is a

worthy alternative to standard education in situations when students and

teachers are physically separated from each other (Keegan, 1980). Students

conduct self-study through specially designed educational materials and are in

two-way communication between them and teachers (Lane, 2009). In online

learning, the teacher becomes more a mediator of learning. The teacher is no

longer the only authoritative source of knowledge. Thus, students get the

opportunity to learn how to absorb scientific and cultural values rationally through
their own critical thinking (Alfonso, 2012:2013; Askhamov et al., 2016; Nasution

& Rafiki, 2018). It was also emphasized that distance education should always

take place along with the concept of an open teaching philosophy. As it was

mentioned earlier, open

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

learning is an education system that can be accessed by every person with

minimal restrictions (Bates, 1995).

The concept of Open and Distance Learning is successfully illustrated by the

experience of the Philippines. ODeL allowed universities to teach Philippine

students in more than 60 countries around the world. This program has enabled

thousands of Philippine students to increase their competence in selected

professions in economics and entrepreneurship (Garcia, 2014). Students learn at

their own pace and use special multimedia materials. They also have the

opportunity to interact with their teachers and classmates in Myportal and

through the Moodle platform.

Distance learning students, like their daytime colleagues, must do their

homework, do research, take exams and participate in online discussion forums

(Arinto & Cantada, 2013). However, distance learning has disadvantages that

require careful study. A striking example can be given from the India's
experience. It is noted that some universities, both private and public, provide a

large number of distance courses of unsatisfactory quality, having a purely

commercial interest. Often these are universities in which the “Entrepreneurship”

is developed at an

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

insufficient level, where there are no necessary innovative technologies and no

competent teaching staff (Dwivedi, 2017; Kuzin, 2018). Moreover, the specifics

of

entrepreneurship education has some nuances. Entrepreneurship is a

specialized broad-based course whose goal is to teach students the skills of

optimal use of resources, as well as knowledge in the field of finance, marketing,

administration and management. Therefore, there are some difficulties in

distance teaching. This form of education requires particularly deep knowledge

of the subject, its specificity, as well as the ability to present it effectively online

(Simonson et al., 2014).

The researchers wanted to find out how this kind of learning be skillful to

build a business. This is to inform either negative or positive outcome of online

learning in the aspiring entrepreneur. In this study, the researchers desire to

know the impact of online learning in developing the skills of aspiring

entrepreneur in ABM students in ICCT College San Mateo S.Y. 2020-2021.

HYPOTHESIS

The researchers were able to formulate hypothesis stated that:

Online Learning is tough, especially when it comes to developing kills as

aspiring entrepreneurs. Why? it is due to the fact that aside from they cannot

learn accurately in this generation through online, there is also a lot of questions

that could not be able to explain virtually. Aspiring entrepreneurs need to

cooperate to those people who clearly know the skills of an entrepreneurs.

Strategies that they cannot get online and, of course, couldn’t learn it by just

themselves, especially when they don’t have enough knowledge about starting

up a business.

There is a huge difference when it comes to developing skills between

learning virtually and experiencing it in reality.

On the other hand, there are also advantages where you can get through

online learning. First and foremost, your safety is secure because you are not

able to go outside and just focusing on yourself. Secondly, there is a chance that

you can control your own time, and also, manage all your tasks that you have.

Lastly, you will learn how to be independent at all cost.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will benefit the following:

For the students: In this study, it will provide a knowledge about the impact of

online learning in developing skills of aspiring entrepreneur. The students will

also know the positive and negative impact of online learning in applying it into

their skills. This study will help them know the possible effects that may affect

their skills in becoming an aspiring entrepreneur.

For Teachers: The result of this study will help the teachers know if online

learning is successful and can be possibly use in future. The study would also

help them evaluate the skills of the aspiring entrepreneurs if this way of learning

made an impact to develop their skills.

ICCT COLLEGES SAN MATEO CAMPUS: the result of this study would benefit

them in a way that they could make an advancement in their learning system. If

possible, the school could be able to offer online classes for aspiring

entrepreneurs. In this way, the school/campus will be on top of the others

because of how successful their advanced learning system for the ABM

students.

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

The researchers were able to formulate assumption stated that:

There are negative effects of online learning in developing the skills of

aspiring Entrepreneurs. First, there are some students who do not have

privileged to have technologies like for instance cellphone, laptop or computer

for them to do the activities, quizzes and assignment.

Second, some of students do not have fast internet connections therefore

they struggle in getting the knowledge they must have.

Last, they felt excluded or left behind for not having all of these

requirements for the new normal learning specifically the online learning.

This way of learning is very challenging for aspiring Entrepreneurs to acquired

enough experience and for setting an objective on how to amend their capability

and skills. In order for them to be a successful Entrepreneurs someday and step-

up in business industry, they must have proper access of learning and most

importantly they must have trained not only through virtual learning but through

doing, practicing and experiencing the given task for them to be effective,

productive and proficient Entrepreneurs with the help of those people who are

skilled enough to share their knowledge. Additionally, experience and expertise

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

are the essential tools of every Entrepreneurs to grow and help them acquire a

great strategy on how their business will grow.

Despite of these barriers, student should engage and abide to this new

normal learning for them to continue and pursue their dreams. It is also important

to acclimate this new strategy of learning so that they would fit in today’s system

of education.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on how aspiring entrepreneur students develop their

skills in online learning. The data collection will be conducted in the total

population of all students of ICCT Colleges San Mateo Campus School Year

2020-2021. This study will show us what is the impact of online learning, can

there be a positive result or a negative result. Also, this study will not cover

other problems that is not related to online learning in developing the skills of

aspiring entrepreneur students. The study would be done through the

utilization of questionnaire to the students as a survey. We conducted this

study to know what are the changes might happen when an aspiring

Entrepreneur will learn through online. The study will give aspiring

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter primarily presents the literature of online learning to the

present school year. The purpose of this research is to determine whether

students of online class are confident in the effectiveness of their education, and

how does it helps to develop the skills of aspiring entrepreneur. It focuses on the

several aspects that will help in the development of this study.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Entrepreneurship education at universities has become increasingly

popular in the world, as traditional and established ways of doing business are

being replaced by creative and innovative methods. Many advanced countries

believe that entrepreneurship is a key element in stimulating economic growth

and development, which provides increased employment opportunities. Students

not only develop core business knowledge and skills, but also improve core

competencies that guarantee entrepreneurial success. They are such

competencies as creativity, initiative, perseverance, teamwork, risk awareness

and responsibility.
THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

In the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has

According to a local Graduate Tracer Study conducted by Tamayo (2015) with

this in mind, Barlongo (2015) maintains that lawmakers should focus on the

potential advancement of our current education system. In light of the current

issue, Velasco (2013) concludes that educational institutions should provide the

utmost concentration on enhancing the level of our Entrepreneurship education.

Entrepreneurship education is characterized by development of entrepreneurs

through business start-ups but the sad reality is, there is less emphasis on

creativity and innovation among students' mindset in higher education

institutions. Moreover, there is less support from academic institutions and

industries to budding entrepreneurs to start and sustain business ventures

(Velasco, 2013).

Entrepreneurship education at universities has become

increasingly popular in the world, as traditional and established ways of doing

business is being replaced by creative and innovative methods. Many advanced

countries believe that entrepreneurship is a key element in stimulating economic

growth and development, which provides increased employment opportunities

(Ossai & Nwalado, 2012). Students not only develop core business knowledge

and skills, but also improve core competencies that guarantee entrepreneurial

success. They are such competencies as creativity, initiative, perseverance,

teamwork, risk awareness and responsibility (JA Europe & Euro Commerce,

2015). In 2007 the International Institute for Educational Planning questioned the

thesis that only the university plays a crucial role in new ideas generation, as

well as in the accumulation and transfer of knowledge. However, higher

education institutions in developing countries still remain the primary means of

overcoming economic difficulties.

Distance learning has become a good alternative to visiting universities,

because it also contributes to the growth of national and individual income, as it

provides more specialists with an opportunity to develop (Dumbu, 2014).

The concept of Open and Distance Learning is successfully illustrated by

the experience of the Philippines.

They also have the

opportunity to interact with their teachers and classmates in My portal and

through the Moodle platform. Distance learning students, like their daytime

colleagues, must do their homework, do research, take exams and participate in

online discussion forums (Arinto & Cantada, 2013).

Distance learning technologies require further development, quality control of

educational programs, as well as more investment from universities and the

government. The purpose of this research is to determine whether students of

distance learning are confident in the effectiveness of their education and

professional future, as well as to find out from entrepreneurs whether graduates

of distance learning can compete in the labor market.

The study utilizes quantitative descriptive research design and

explanation research to describe and explain the level of entrepreneurial

knowledge and entrepreneurial intentions of students. It describes and explains

what is found in the data. It involves the description, recording, analysis and

interpretation based on the data gathered through questionnaires which are

statistically computed. It is

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

a fact finding with adequate interpretation. It assesses, determines and reports

the way things are. In other words, it describes the data that have been collected

on research sample, describes “what is” about the data gathered. In line with

the current study, descriptive assessment and correlational method was

deployed. The study determines the entrepreneurial attitude and how it affects

their entrepreneurial intentions. This was to identify the level of entrepreneurial

knowledge among students and its effects on the entrepreneurial.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Matlay (2008), Entrepreneurship education is considered as an

educational programme that provides students with entrepreneurial skills,

competencies, and knowledge about pursuing an entrepreneurial career (Ekpoh

and Edet, 2011; Ooi et al., 2011). Entrepreneurship education is an effective

means of inspiring student interest with regard to an entrepreneurial career,

engaging entrepreneurial actions and increasing venturing rate of

learners. Matlay (2008) contends that graduates who acquire entrepreneurship

skills in higher education institutions may be considered as entrepreneurs.

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

Scholars have empirically provided evidence that entrepreneurship

education is an effective means of inspiring students' intention towards an

entrepreneurial career. Certainly, the extent to which entrepreneurial training has

an impact in terms of the necessary skills depends on whether entrepreneurship

can be taught or learned as a subject (Matlay H., 2008). Several studies

emphasized that entrepreneurial training can be taught (Ajzen, 1991; Owusu-

Mintah, 2014).

However, distance learning has disadvantages that require careful study. A

striking example can be given from the India's experience. It is noted that some

universities, both private and public, provide a large number of distance courses

of unsatisfactory quality, having a purely commercial interest. Often these are

universities in which the “Entrepreneurship” is developed at an insufficient level,

where there are no necessary innovative technologies and no competent

teaching staff (Dwivedi, 2017; Kuzin, 2018).

FOREIGN STUDIES

Matlay (2008), concluded that entrepreneurship education can be defined

as 'the whole set of education and training activities -within the educational

system or not-that try to develop in the participants the intention to perform

entrepreneurial behaviors', or some of the elements that affect that intention,

such as entrepreneurial knowledge, desirability of the entrepreneurial activity, or

its feasibility'. He revealed that over ten year's period under scrutiny with 64

graduates in the research sample, all of the graduates who had undergone

entrepreneurship education became entrepreneurs.

In online learning, the teacher becomes more a mediator of learning. The

teacher is no longer the only authoritative source of knowledge. Thus, students

get the opportunity to learn how to absorb scientific and cultural values rationally

through their own critical thinking. Moreover, the specifics of entrepreneurship

education have some nuances. Entrepreneurship is a specialized broad-based

course whose goal is to teach students the skills of optimal use of resources, as

well as knowledge in the field of finance, marketing, administration and

management.

Therefore, there are some difficulties in distance teaching. This form of

education requires particularly deep knowledge of the subject, its specificity, as

well as the ability to present it effectively online.

LOCAL STUDIES

The field of entrepreneurship has long been divided as to whether

individuals are born entrepreneurs or if they can become one. Although it is true

that some people are gifted with traits or skills that are generally associated with
entrepreneurs, it appears increasingly clear that these entrepreneurial skills and

The teaching method is based on a combination of lectures, classroom

exercises, guest speakers, discussions and readings. For the online section,

educational activities are delivered in asynchronous mode in the form of

PowerPoint presentations that guide the mandatory readings and video

capsules of entrepreneurs or experts who illustrate the concepts under study. A

discussion forum is available for students to exchange among themselves and to

comment on the educational activities. An institutional academic platform called

"Mon Portail" (My Portal) can be accessed by students via the Internet. The

pedagogical

approach used to teach entrepreneurship, both in the classroom and online,

essentially corresponds to the "supply model" as represented in the theoretical

framework of entrepreneurship education developed by Nabi et al. (2017) as part

of their systematic review of the literature on the impact of entrepreneurial

education.

DESCRIPTION of RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The instrument used was a questioner checklist to gather the needed data

for the student's profile. The draft of a questioner was drawn out based on the
aspiring entrepreneurs. In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in

the designing of good data collection instrument were considered. For instance,

statement describing the situation or issues pertaining to the was toned down to

accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents on their skills in

terms of entrepreneurship. Close-ended option were provided to accommodate

to easily formatted views related to the topics. In this way, the instrument is

authorized to obtain valid responses of the students. Preference for the use of

the Yes or No questionnaire or close-ended questionnaire is premised on

several research assumptions such as an easy and quick to answer, response

choice can clarify the question and improves consistency of responses.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, conclusions we

identified and corresponding recommendations.

This study general objective is to determine the impacts of online learning

to the development of the skills needed for our aspiring entrepreneur. After the

survey that we conducted and the analysis and the interpretation of the data

gathered on ABM Students, we found that online learning has a great impact on

students who wants to develop skills to become an aspiring entrepreneur. Based

on the data gathered, most of the ABM Students agreed that they learn new

things and skills but they disagree that online learning is efficient on becoming

an aspiring entrepreneur. Online learning is only efficient in entrepreneurial

knowledge but not on the actual skills needed.

1. What is the impact of online learning in entrepreneurial knowledge

of ABM students?
35 out of the 65 students agreed that they will be able to learn

entrepreneurial knowledge through online learning. This means that 54% of the

students are

MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

confident that they will develop the knowledge needed for this course through

online learning.

2. How does online learning affect the grades of ABM students?

50 out of 65 students said that there is an impact in developing the skills of

an aspiring entrepreneur through online class. Since grades defines how much

you have learned this means that 77% of the students are expecting that there

will be a lot of changes to their own academic performance.

3. How was the experience of students in virtual learning?

55 out of 65 students said that they learned new skills and knowledge

regarding entrepreneurial skills. This means that 85% of the students had a good

experience from this new academic system.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the work conducted in this research, the group has provided

references, studies and literatures of impact of online learning in developing the

skills of aspiring entrepreneur of ABM students in ICCT Colleges San Mateo

Campus S.Y. 2020-2021

First, we all know that the online learning affects our daily lives, a lot of us

is force to build business or open-up a business just to support their needs and

to pay to their expenses such as internet bills, electric bills, gadgets for online

learning, etc. Many of us has been tested if we can support our daily needs and

expenses and most of us cannot do it, others are force to stop their education

just to support their need and prevent hunger because they cannot afford the

new leaning system. Research should document that learning so that impact of

online learning in developing the skills of future entrepreneur to learn

productively from the experiment.

Finally, as we conducted a research about developing skills of aspiring

entrepreneur. Researchers saw in our survey and research that ABM Students

of ICCT Colleges San Mateo Campus S.Y. 2020-2021 have a positive feedback

of
THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF
ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR OF GRADE 12 ABM IN ICCT COLLEGES SAN
MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

online learning system that we are using now. Despite of being not in the school

and having a face to face classes, they can still learn skills to be entrepreneur

through online classes. This research helps the professors and schools to

continue their work and have a great promise for teaching ABM Students

entrepreneurial skills that they need. Students who is force to stop can also learn

a thing through their works or business and via online.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, we concluded that, our topic has a great impact to the students. As

we continue to study in online class. Most of the students that responded has

agreed that online learning does not help to improve their entrepreneurial skills.

Students wanted to have a physical training to gain and to have wisdom for

their dream or goals. As we have learned from online learning, only knowledge is

acquired, but the same wisdom remains. Students need to experience what to

do when they become entrepreneurs in order to acquire knowledge. Most of the

students believed that experience is the key to become a successful

entrepreneur, experience will give you Innovative Business Ideas. Online

Learning is only efficient in entrepreneurial knowledge but not on the actual skills

needed.

THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LEARNING IN DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF
ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR OF GRADE 12 ABM IN ICCT COLLEGES SAN
MATEO CAMPUS S.Y. 2020-2021

RESEARCHER’S NARRATIVE EXPERIENCES

Online learning has been changing the face of the education system for quite

some time now due to the pandemic. Keeping up with these changes is

necessary in the education systems to cope up with problems that arises. But not

only this is the problem but also students have different barriers and challenges

that they are facing and despite of that still continuing their studies through online

learning or through modular. That is how we come up for our research to identify

what is the impact of online learning when it comes to developing the skills of

ABM students.

Since our teacher decided to make the research paper by section, our

section made a decision to divide ourselves per groups and assigning different

parts of research paper to every group. We made a leader for each group to

guide our classmates. It was successful as all of us managed and contributed to

each part of our research. We made our survey questionnaire based on the

impacts of Online Learning in Developing skills of Aspiring Entrepreneur of ABM

Students through Google form as it was easier for the respondents to answer

and that is what our teacher told us to use when we will do a survey. We limit our

I
respondents to ABM students of ICCT College San Mateo Campus as it will be

easier for us to gather

information and data since we we are all in the same campus and for the

research to be more accurate. It's good that many students participated in our

survey and we thank them for that because we will be able to know what is the

answer to our questions and come up with accurate recommendations to give for

the end of our research paper.
