ECO Living Programme @ Lorong Lew Lian

Operations: The first Buzz session

Venue: Blocks 1 – 8, Lorong Lew Lian

Date: 2 April 2011
Time: 9.15am – 12.30pm

Overview

ECO Singapore is organising an ECO Living Programme for blocks 1 to 8

at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone ‘B’
Residents’ Committee (RC) with volunteers from Starbucks.

ECO Living Programme is a community grassroots programme that aims

to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit
for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste
audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for
improvement. It would be a yearlong programme that will continuously
engage residents and encourage them to make a commitment to
change.

Some of the Starbucks volunteers went for a briefing session on 31

March conducted by ECO Singapore.

Objectives

 To get residents to understand

about the ECO Living Programme
and how it would benefit them.
 To get residents to sign up for the

Overview of the first Buzz

Three representatives from ECO Singapore as well as the RC
Chairperson met up at 8.30am to prepare the necessary logistics at the
Community Hall near block 5.

The first Starbucks volunteers arrived at 8.45am and 85 Starbucks

volunteers in total turned up. At 9.15am, we started to divide the
volunteers into groups of three and assigned them to the 8 blocks. Each
block would have one block IC. Several Starbucks managers were also
present and were an invaluable aid in helping to organize the
volunteers.

A final briefing was conducted to run through with the volunteers to key
points to communicate to residents, the things to note, how to fill up the
sign-up form. Finally, we did a role-play to simulate a pair of volunteers
visiting 2 residents.

At 10pm, the volunteers collected their logistics. Each group would get
a reusable bag containing a lanyard, a clipboard, reminder cards, 2
posters, an info sheet with typical utilities bill savings, and a sign-up form.

The volunteers then fanned out to the various blocks to do the pitch.

By 11.45am, all the volunteers had completed their allocated units and
returned to the Community Hall.

After all the logistics were collected, a mass debrief was conducted. At
12.30pm, the programme officially ended.

Results

A total of 98 households units signed up for the programme, out of 1084

in the adopted precinct. About 1 in 3 households who were at home
signed up.

However, the majority of the households were not at home.

Feedback

Some of the volunteers were not present for the briefing on 31 March
and consequently could not communicate to residents how the actual
audit would be conducted. An additional info sheet will be given to the

As anticipated, language problems were encountered. For example,

some residents could only speak dialect. In the second Buzz, volunteers
with the necessary language ability would be assigned to follow up on
these identified households.

The logistics prepared will also be increased to cope with volunteers

turning up that may not have previously registered or anticipated to
come.

Arrangement of the volunteers is challenging without a good estimate

on who are coming. Hence, on the second session, we will work on
anticipating last minute add on, and work with the Starbucks team for a
quick way to sort them out.

The volunteers not only had a good experience in going to these

household, but also learned to appreciate their own circumstances are
very much more privileged than others.

All in all, the sign-up rate was encouraging and the volunteers definitely
learnt a lot and built up their confidence in terms of reaching out to the
public.
