Overview

ECO Singapore is organising an ECO Living Programme for blocks 1 to 8

at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone ‘B’
Residents’ Committee (RC) with volunteers from Starbucks.

ECO Living Programme is a community grassroots programme that aims

to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit
for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste
audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for
improvement. It would be a yearlong programme that will continuously
engage residents and encourage them to make a commitment to
change.

Some of the Starbucks volunteers went for a briefing session on 31

March conducted by ECO Singapore.

This was followed by the first “Buzz” session on 2nd April.

Overview of the second Buzz

Three representatives from ECO Singapore arrived at 8.30am to prepare
the necessary logistics at the Community Hall near block 5.

The first Starbucks volunteers arrived at 8.45am and about 65 Starbucks

volunteers in total turned up. At 9.30am, a final briefing was conducted
to run through with the volunteers to key points to communicate to
residents, the things to note, how to fill up the sign-up form and the
various logistics they would receive. Finally, we did a role-play to
simulate a pair of volunteers visiting 2 residents.

Once the volunteers were clear on their tasks we started to divide the
volunteers into district level groups. There were 6 districts, each led by a
district head, as well as an additional group of HQ members.

Based on feedback from the first buzz, there was a large discrepancy
between the groups of the number of units they had to cover.
Therefore, this time, we fixed the number of groups at 22 and pre-
allocated the units to them on the sign-up form.

Given the number of volunteers who turned up, the district heads were
briefed to form groups of three within each district, with each group
comprising of members of different ethnic groups to allow a larger
diversity of language abilities.

At 10.15pm, the volunteers collected their logistics. Each group would

get a reusable bag containing a lanyard, a clipboard, reminder medal,
2 posters, an info sheet with typical utilities bill savings, flyers, a sign-up
form, a description of ECO Living Programme in 4 languages, a help
sheet on how to pitch and a starbucks voucher.

The volunteers then fanned out to the various blocks to do the pitch.

By 11.45am, all the volunteers

had completed their allocated
units and returned to the
Community Hall.

After all the logistics were

collected, a mass debrief was
conducted. At 12.30pm, the
programme officially ended.

A total of 42 households units signed up for the programme, out of 1084
in the adopted precinct. Curiously, 3 units who expressed disinterest in
the previous buzz session changed their minds and chose to sign-up.

Feedback

Posters were put up by the RC on 7th April, and some residents

commented that they had seen the posters. This perked their curiosity
and probably aided in making it easier to explain the programme to
them.

In the previous buzz session, volunteers sometimes forgot to fill out

reminder cards for the residents. This time, they were given reminder
“medals” which had the dates printed on the back and which could be
hung on the door grille. The volunteers felt that this simplified their task
and would also make it easier for residents to remind themselves.

The flyers were also useful as some residents preferred to have

something tangible to keep and read. Some residents who could not
make up their minds could also keep the flyers and sign up with the RC
or via email subsequently. However, it was noted that most residents did
not have an email and therefore providing a contact number would be
more suitable.

The volunteers generally approved of the changes made based on

their feedback, and it is hoped that they will be even more forthcoming
in giving feedback in the future.

WHAT IS ECO LIVING PROGRAMME?

ECO  Living  Programme  is  jointly  organized  by  Braddell  Heights  Zone  ‘B’ 
RC & ECO Singapore to help you, the residents from Blocks 1 – 8, Lorong 
Lew Lian, to save on your utilities bill and help save the Earth! 
 
If  you  sign‐up  for  the  programme,  volunteers  from  Starbucks  will  visit 
your home once a month to conduct a short survey to understand your 
electricity,  water  and  waste  usage  habits.  The  volunteers  will  then 
suggest  specific  ways  you  can  cut  down  on  your  electricity  and  water 
usage as well as reduce, reuse or recycle your waste.     
 
The first visit to do the survey will be on 23rd April. You will be rewarded 
with a Starbucks voucher for your participation. Subsequently, on the 2nd 
visit, you will get a free energy saving light bulb and on the 6th visit, a free 
paint‐job! 
 
 
 
APA ITU PROGRAM GAYAHIDUP ECO? 
 
 
 Program  Gayahidup  ECO  adalah  satu  kerjasama  diantara  Jawatankuasa 
Penduduk  Braddell  Heights  Zone  ‘B’  dan  ECO  Singapura.  Ianya  untuk 
membantu  anda,  para  penduduk  Lorong  Lew  Lian  dari  blok  1  hingga  8, 
berjimat dalam bil elektrik & air di samping menyelamatkan bumi. 
 
Jika  anda  mengambil  bahagian  dalam  program  ini,  sukarelawan  dari 
Starbucks akan berkunjung ke rumah anda sebulan sekali untuk membuat 
tinjauan ringkas bagi mengetahui cara anda menggunakan kuasa elektrik 
dan air.  Selepas tinjauan itu, mereka akan memberi cadangan‐cadangan 
khusus  untuk  membantu  anda  mengurangkan  penggunaan  elektrik  dan 
air, mengelakkan pembaziran termasuk cara‐cara untuk kitar semula.  
 
Mereka akan mengadakan kunjungan pertama mereka pada 23 haribulan 
April 2011 untuk membuat tinjauan. Jika anda mengambil bahagian, anda 
akan  diberikan  baucer  Starbucks.  Seterusnya,  anda  akan  diberikan

共同主办的计划。目的是协助你，Lorong Lew Lian 
一到八号组屋居民减少水电费，而同时维护地球！ 
 
参与后，Starbucks的义工会每月上门拜访一次，然后通过短短的调查，了解你的水电用
法，和垃圾处理方式。义工就能给你适当的提示，以帮助你节省能源。 
 
义工会在四月二十三日上门做第一次调查。那时，你就能得到一个Starbucks咖啡礼卷。
过后，第二次拜访我们会赠送一个节能灯泡，而第六次会替你粉刷屋子！
