Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
When initially planning this document, its intent was simple – to show vinyl record collectors how to
properly take care of their records and how to clean them to keep them playing optimally. My main
challenge was making my verbiage as simple as possible for newcomer record collectors due to my
extensive knowledge of how vinyl records work and knowing already how to clean them.

First Draft (for peer editing)

My first draft was very bare bones and simple. I had one image in my instructions, and my document
didn’t go further than materials needed for cleaning and then the instructions. I didn’t have much
formatting going on either, but there was enough to be able to tell how the document was split up.

Second Draft (for your packet)

My second draft was stronger than the first. I added more images to show the optimal way to use
the cleaning materials in order to clean the records, as well as adding more formatting in order to
make the document look stronger. However, when reading the comments after submitting, I realized
there were still a few things missing.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

After reading the comments from my second draft, I took those critiques and ended up with a strong
final document. I changed formatting to look more visually appealing, I took items that would be
more considered “tips” and added them in a separate section, and I also added an introduction that
would help readers realize the intention of this document.
