Guru Sahib sacrificed his life for the protection of the sect adhering to the tradition of 'Tilak - Janeou' for which he himself had no conviction. Guru Sahib believed that all humans possessed the freedom to embrace the tenets and practice and rituals of their respective religions. It was not possible to alter the allegiance and deference of people by coercion and persecution. This is the reason which prompted him to assure the Kashmiri Pandits of hand holding and protecting their faith without hesitation when they approached him on being disillusioned from all quarters. After this affirmation of support, Guru Sahib said the Kashmiri Pandits to go back home and he started himself for Delhi to sacrifice Himself in order to protect their faith. From Agra he was taken into custody alongwith Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji, Bhai Dayala Ji, and brought to Delhi. They all were mercilessly tortured for submission to convert to Islam. After their refusal Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji and Bhai Dayala Ji were martyred in front of Guru Teg Bahadur ji after being subjected to inhuman brutality. At last, Guru Ji too was executed (beheaded mercilessly) for refusing to accept Islam and declining to perform miracles.
