5E Lesson Plan Template*

This assignment is worth 20 points. A draft (5 points) will be submitted in week 6 for
feedback. The final plan to be graded will be submitted during Week 8 (15 points).

Lesson Subject Area Environmental Science

Specific Topic Respiration - Yeast Respiration Investigation [Fermentation Lab]

Appropriate Standards being BIO.A.3.2.1 Compare the basic transformation of energy during
addressed photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

HS-LS2-3. - Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for the

cycling of matter and flow of energy in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on conceptual understanding of the
role of aerobic and anaerobic respiration in different environments.]
[Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include the specific chemical
processes of either aerobic or anaerobic respiration.

HS-LS1-7. -Use a model to illustrate that cellular respiration is a chemical

process whereby the bonds of food molecules and oxygen molecules are
broken and the bonds in new compounds are formed, resulting in a net
transfer of energy. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the conceptual
understanding of the inputs and outputs of the process of cellular
respiration.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment should not include
identification of the steps or specific processes involved in cellular
respiration.]

Instructional Objectives At the end of this lesson the students will be able to:
(Bloom Level) 1. Recall what is needed (reactants) and what is released (products) in
Minimum of three respiration.
2. Explain the role of energy in chemical processes for life
3. Experience performing a simple experience and providing
experiment observations using both words and images. t
ENGAGE Students will look at their hypothesis and see if and/or how it

connects to Respiration and Photosynthesis - demo video on photosynthesis
experiment which we cannot do b/c of material and space constraints

Hypothesis was HW on 12/1 - 12/2 depending on class. Completing the

following. “If we combine warm water, yeast and a food source, then……”

EXPLORE
Activities Read introduction to lab activity - what does the reaction in the activity
remind us of?? [hope to get responses like photo or respiration].

Define fermentation and highlight anaerobic v aerobic reactions - with out

oxygen v. uses oxygen

Complete hypothesis on sheet - responding to question: What will happen to

the balloon? Why do you predict this?

EXPLAIN Students will look over materials and review safety once again - this will
Activities also be done the day prior when creating the initial hypothesis.

Ensure they know that writing observations from the cylinder AND balloon
are important

Students will perform RXN - placing materials at the front desk of the row
groups were made to maximize learning and understanding.
ELABORATE Draw and record what is seen. identify a group recorder.
Activities
If the entire class is in class follow:
Day 2 - full class reminder of class non-negotiables and behavior
expectations. Lawhen we conduct a lab roles will be assigned folliwug the
seating pattern. follow from their seating chart with the front row being the
material g

If less than ½ of class is present follow:
