HIGHWAY AND RAILROAD ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT NO. 4

INSTRUCTION: MUST BE HANDWRITTEN, WRITE THE PROBLEM, COMPLETE SOLUTION WITH FIGURES. BOX YOUR
FINAL ANSWER. USE BOND PAPER, WRITE YOUR NAME AND SECTION (PER PAGE).

1. A symmetrical parabolic curve passes through point A whose elevation is 23.23 m at a distance of 54 m from the PC.
The elevation of the PC at station 4+100 is 22.56 m. The grade of the back tangent is +2.3% and the length of curve is
165 m.

a) Compute the grade of the forward tangent.

b) Compute the stationing of the highest point of the curve.

c) Compute the elevation of the highest point of the curve.

2. An underpass crossing a reinforced concrete bridge along the Shaw Blvd has a symmetrical vertical curve, having a
downward grade of -4.0% meeting an upward grade of +8.0% at the vertex V at elevation 70 m and stationing of 7+930,
exactly underneath the center line of the bridge having a width of 10 m. If the required minimum clearance under the
bridge is 5.2 m, and the elevation of the bottom of the bridge is 77.99 m.

a) Determine the length of the vertical parabolic curve that shall connect the two tangents.

b) Determine the stationing of the point a catch basin (lowest point) will be placed.

c) Determine the elevation of the point where a catch basin (lowest point) will be placed.
