Constructivist Approach in the

Philippine Traditional Education System

Traditional teaching—passive learning, authoritative teachers and competitive

environment—has been the longest installed teaching style in the Philippine education system.
As the country confronts the COVID-19 dilemma, Filipino students were given limited learning
modalities e.g., distance learning, modular learning, blended learning and homeschooling. Filipino
teachers today are more open-minded to adapt to the ever-changing cognitive needs of the
students.

Within the traditional curriculum, Philippine educators begin to practice the Constructivist
teaching style—active learning, consultative teachers and collaborative environment. However,
just like any other teaching style, Constructivist approach has its pros and cons. Its pros are (1)
Students are given independence; (2) Teachers establish differentiated lessons that match the
cognitive needs of the students; and (3) This approach is more enthusiastic. Furthermore, its cons
are (1) It is time-consuming; (2) It does not fit with standardized examinations and; (3) It is
exhaustive with resources for differentiation for each student.
