Introduction
Two-dimensional (2D):
• Shapes are 2D elements of a profile created by the
2D Sketch Panel tools, e.g. circles
• Profiles, sketches, figures all describe 2D
representations of the part
Three-dimensional (3D):
• Part is the 3D representation of an object

Part Modeling Features
Description Guideline
Basic unit of a parametric solid model
• A feature is a 3D shape. Parts are
formed by their features
• Model features mimic actual
design & manufacturing features
(e.g., fillet, counterbore hole, draft
angle)
• 2 basic kinds of model features:
• Sketched (e.g., extrusion,
revolution, loft)
• Built-in (e.g., hole, chamfer,
fillet, shell)
• No sketch required

2D Constraints
Description Guideline
• A constraint is a mathematical
requirement placed on the
geometry of a 3D model.
• Kinds of part constraints:
• Dimensional – limits feature size
• Geometric – limits feature shape
(e.g., parallelism tangency,
colinearity)
• Assembly constraints (e.g. mate,
insert).
Description Guideline
A parameter is a named quantity
whose value can be changed
• For example, d0 = 10
• Parametric dimensions:
• Control feature size
• Are easily modified feature
geometry changes
• Establish relationships across
features, parts, assemblies
• For example, d0 = d1/2
Description Guideline
1. Define sketch plane
2. Sketch the geometry
• Some geometric constraints
added automatically
3. Add other geometric constraints
4. Add dimensions fully
constrained
5. Create the (base) feature
6. Repeat 1 to 5, adding other
(sketched and/or built-in)
features
Description Guideline
Rough sketch
• Some geometric
constraints are
automatically applied
Description Guideline
• Apply constraints.
• Display constraints
Description Guideline
Add Dimensions
• Profile is fully constrained
Description Guideline
Add primary feature
• Profile is fully constrained
Description Guideline
Add secondary feature
• Part is fully in solid.
Description Guideline
All features will be stored in
browser bar
• Part is built with primary
and secondary features.
