PROUD SUPPORTER OF NORTHERN PLAINS DANCE
Friends and supporters, Northern Plains Dance wouldn’t be here without you. We
are forever grateful for the tremendous support of our community over the past
two years, as we weathered an unimaginable and challenging story. We were
able to emerge, eager to continue sharing dance with the whole community.
Seeing all of you in the audience this holiday season fills our hearts with
indescribable joy.
I invite you to explore all that Northern Plains Dance has to offer. We head into a
new year with renewed vigor, to share more of our story, more of the belief that
dance is for every body, and more of the joy that movement can bring.
Thank you for joining us for today’s performance of The Nutcracker. Whether
you’re a first-time Nutcracker audience member or a tried and true attendee,
I hope our beautiful production will brighten your holiday season. Enjoy the
performance!

The Nutcracker is a bright and beautiful story that has been the highlight of the holiday
season for over 100 years. While this ballet has a history filled with love and cheer, we must
also acknowledge that it has a history of being disrespectful towards many cultures. At
Northern Plains Dance, we believe it is our duty as artists to both honor the traditional spirit
of The Nutcracker and adapt it to fit a more equitable world. Today, we are able to present
to you The Nutcracker as what it should be: a celebration not only of the holiday spirit, but
of our diverse cultures and customs and of the things that bring us together, like joy, hope,
and of course, dance.
mission
To inspire the appreciation of dance through artistic excellence and to enrich the
cultural landscape of our community.

Clara is immediately taken with the gift, but her brother, Fritz, is jealous and
steals the Nutcracker. In the chaos of his teasing, Fritz accidentally breaks
the Nutcracker. Herr Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and assures Clara
all will be well.
The party ends and Clara, just before the stroke of midnight, returns to
the darkened living room to check on her Nutcracker. She is frightened by
large mice, but suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer appears and the mice flee.
Much to Clara’s amazement, Herr Drosselmeyer commands the Christmas
tree to grow to such an enormous size that it pushes away the entire room.
Next, her Nutcracker springs to life. The Nutcracker introduces himself and
his soldiers to Clara.
The mice suddenly reappear, and a vicious battle ensues. The soldiers
seem to be winning, but the great Rat King appears and the tide turns.
The Nutcracker and the Rat King fight, and just as the Rat King is about to
overpower the Nutcracker, Clara distracts him, giving the Nutcracker the
chance to overcome the Rat King.
The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince dance for Clara. The
Nutcracker Prince carries a sleeping Clara back to her home, where she
awakens, uncertain if her magical journey was a dream or reality.

Seeing the production is just the beginning for these young audiences. The
Educational Presentations are ripe with educational content, and students and
teachers are given tools to discuss the ballet, in which students learn about the
history of Tchaikovsky’s score, costuming, and dance terminology.
