Unit1 Plástica 2º
Unit1 Plástica 2º
The main objective of this unit is to develop observational skills and artistic expression.
The former consists of analysing various kinds of art forms (drawing, painting,
photography, etc.) and understanding the different degrees of iconicity that each image
portrays.

We will develop artistic expression by drawing a plant, using a ruler to draw straight lines,
illustrating the different phases of growth of a living being, drawing a mandala and
creating a book (at the end of the unit there is an activity that stresses the importance of
taking care of animals). The pupils will have the opportunity to use their imagination and
practise drawing and colouring, while observing the world around them. They will also
develop their creating skills.

1. Get to know the works of botanical artists like Margaret Mee.
2. Use a photograph of a plant as a model for a drawing, and understand the
difference between a realistic illustration and a drawing.
3. Join dots using a ruler.
4. Draw the phases of an animal’s growth in several sequences.
5. Recognise a mandala and use the basic elements of a circle (centre, radius and
diameter) to draw a mandala plant.

art and images.
3.
8. Use IT as a way to learn about new concepts and artistic techniques.
4.
5.
6. Previous knowledge
In this unit, pupils will need to have experience of the following basic concepts in order to
work successfully: the difference between a photo and a drawing, the concept of a line
and how to draw one, what a mandala is, what a circumference is, etc.
To begin ask questions to find out what related experience and knowledge the pupils already
have in the subject matter.
- Do you think it’s important to observe an object before drawing it? Why?
- What do we use a ruler for? Do you know what we can draw with it?
- What’s a circumference? Can you trace one in the air with your finger?
- What’s a mandala?
Cross-curricular links
Arts and Crafts is an area of learning in its own right, it also has many cross-curricular
links. As well as developing artistic skills, this unit offers the opportunity to develop other
areas, especially:
English Language: the use of specific and technical vocabulary, descriptions of works of
art, artists and reading texts related to the topic.

Warm-up
1. Start this unit by asking about the images on the worksheet with questions
like these: What do plants need to grow? What do you see in Margaret Mee’s picture? How could
we describe the image? What is the difference between the artist’s drawing and the photograph?
Will closely studying a plant help us to draw it? Why?
2. Plants are a common theme in art, due to their beauty. Nevertheless,
certain artists such as Margaret Mee, a botanical artist, helped scientists to research and
learn more about plant life in the Amazon rainforest.
3. To familiarise the pupils with Margaret Mee, it is important to see and discuss
some of her other drawings. Visit the web link Paintings by Margaret Mee
Margaret Mee (Chesham, England 1909 - Seagreve, England 1988). She studied art in
London. In 1952 she moved to Brazil where she taught art at the British school of Sao
Paulo. She became a botanical artist for the city’s Botanical Institute. Between 1958 and
1988 she made fifteen expeditions to explore the Amazon rainforest and draw in detail its
plant life.
Her work became a valuable reference for the world of science and art. She was one of
the first women ecologists.
Mention how she would spend days in the jungle drawing the plants on site in order to achieve a high
degree of realism in her pictures. How long would she have to spend studying a plant so as to
capture so much detail?
4. Emphasise that not all drawings have to be so realistic, but we should study
the subject carefully for inspiration. In the case of this artist, the degree of realism is due to
the style: botanical art (realistic and detailed). The pupils should understand that a drawing is
merely a representation and should not be judged on its degree of realism.
5. Because it is not possible to go outside search online and look at plants in
the area: the different sizes among a single species, their leaves, flowers, colours, textures,
etc.

6. To set the mood, the teacher can, several days beforehand, bring in a plant
or some seeds to plant. For a few weeks, take care of the plant and watch how it grows and
changes. Ask the pupils to take notes and draw small sketches. The class can also take a photo
every week to document the plant’s growth.
