SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
1. CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM
T his s ys tem is c ontrolled by the E C M , and is ac tivated by the throttle pos ition s ens or and motor. T he
E C M c ontrols the following func tions : O N - O FF, - (C O A ST )/SE T , + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ), C A N C E L ,
vehic le s peed operation, motor output c ontrol, and s hift down c ontrol.
T he E C M c ompares the driving vehic le s peed from the s peed s ens or with the s tored vehic le
s peed s et through the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h. T he E C M ins truc ts the throttle valve motor
of the throttle body as s embly to c los e the valve when the driving s peed is greater than the
s tored s peed, and ins truc ts it to open the valve when the driving s peed is les s than the s tored
s peed.
T he E C M rec eives s ignals s uc h as O N - O FF, - (C O A ST )/SE T , + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ),
and C A N C E L from the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h and exec utes the c ommand.
cardiagn.com
T he E C M illuminates the c ombination meter's C RU I SE main indic ator light when it rec eives a
c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h O N s ignal.
T he E C M c anc els the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem when the brake pedal is depres s ed and the E C M
rec eives a s top light s witc h s ignal.
T he E C M c anc els the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem when the s hift lever is moved to exc ept D or S
(S5 and S4 range) (for U 2 5 0 E ).
T he E C M c anc els the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem when the s hift lever is moved to exc ept D or 3
(for U 3 4 1 E ).
T he E C M c anc els the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem when the c lutc h pedal is depres s ed and the E C M
rec eives a c lutc h s witc h s ignal (for M /T ).
2. LIMIT CONTROL
(a) L ow s peed limit
T he lowes t pos s ible limit of the s peed s etting range is s et at approximately 4 0 km/h (2 5 mph).
T he c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem c annot be s et when the driving vehic le s peed is below the low s peed
limit. C ruis e c ontrol operation will be automatic ally c anc eled but the s tored vehic le s peed will be
retained when the vehic le s peed drops below the low s peed limit of 4 0 km/h (2 5 mph) while the
c ruis e c ontrol is in operation.
T he highes t pos s ible limit of the s peed s etting range is s et at approximately 2 0 0 km/h (1 2 5
mph). T he c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem c annot be s et when the driving vehic le s peed is over the high
s peed limit. A ls o, + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ) c annot be us ed to inc reas e s peed beyond the high
s peed limit.
(a) SE T C O N T RO L
T he vehic le s peed is s tored and c ons tant s peed c ontrol is maintained when pus hing the c ruis e

indic ator light is on), and the vehic le s peed is within the s et s peed range between the low and high
s peed limits .
(b) - (C O A ST ) C O N T RO L
When the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h is s et to - (C O A ST )/SE T and held in that pos ition while the
c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem is operating, the E C M s ends a "throttle valve opening angle 0 °" demand
s ignal to the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem. T hen the vehic le s peed, when the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h
is releas ed, is s tored and maintained.
HINT:
An actual throttle valve opening angle of 0° is not possible due to the idle speed control, etc.
(c ) T A P - D O WN C O N T RO L
When tapping down the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h to - (C O A ST )/SE T (for approximately 0 .6

than 5 km/h (3 .1 mph), the driving vehic le s peed is s tored and c ons tant s peed c ontrol is
maintained.
(d) A C C E L E RA T I O N C O N T RO L
T he throttle valve motor of the throttle body as s embly is ins truc ted by the E C M to open the
throttle valve when + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ) on the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h is pres s ed and
held while the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem is in operation. When the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h is
releas ed from + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ), the vehic le s peed is s tored and the vehic le is
c ontrolled at a c ons tant s peed.
(e) T A P - U P C O N T RO L
When tapping up the c ruis e c ontrol main s witc h to + (A C C E L )/RE S (RE SU M E ) (for approximately
0 .6 s ec onds ) while the c ruis e c ontrol s ys tem is in operation, the s tored vehic le s peed inc reas es
eac h time by approximately 1 .6 km/h (1 .0 mph). H owever, when the differenc e between the driving
s peed and the s tored vehic le s peed is more than 5 km/h (3 .1 mph), the s tored vehic le s peed will
not be c hanged.
(f) RE SU M E C O N T RO L
I f c ruis e c ontrol operation was c anc eled with the s top light s witc h, the C A N C E L s witc h or the low
s peed limit c ontrol, and if driving s peed is within the limit range, pus hing the c ruis e c ontrol main

rec eives this s ignal, it c anc els the c ruis e c ontrol. T he fail- s afe func tion operates to enable normal
driving even if there is a malfunc tion in the s top light s ignal c irc uit. T he c anc ellation c ondition oc c urs
when voltage is applied to terminal S T P . When the brake is applied, voltage is normally applied to
terminal ST P of the E C M through the S T O P fus e and the s top light s witc h, and the E C M turns the c ruis e
c ontrol off.
