CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Addiction is broadly defined as physical and/or psychological dependency on a drug.
People who are dependent on tobacco are classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM-5) as having tobacco use disorder, which is placed in
the same class as other substance use disorder. Such disorders are diagnosed based
on symptoms such as craving, withdrawal, impaired control over use of the substance,
and continued use despite knowledge of health risk.1
The determinants of smoking are some mix of biological, psychological and
social/cultural factors. Theories of smoking cessation differ. in their conceptualizations
of the relative importance of and inter-relationships between these factors. Interventions
aiming to promote healthy behaviors that are based on theory or theoretical constructs
are more effective than those not grounded in theory.2

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Lately a problem has occurred with teen smoking the number of teens who smoke has
dramatically risen over the past years this is a problem because smoking causes bug
health risk that lead to problems and disease that can kill you teens are mainly smoking
when there is no supervision it usually occurs in the parks, under bridges, and in town
away from their parents they are usually doing it because of the peer pressure and they
think it is cool. Those are the reasons why smoking is bad, and why, when and where
their doing it.
Cigarette smoking is a global problem. Once a person starts smoking, it will be
continuous and becomes unstoppable unless you are determined to stop or something
is wrong with your health that you are required to stop. The smoke from a cigarette
contains more than 4000 chemicals, which could have various toxic, mutagenic and
carcinogenic effects. The products that are most damaging are tar, a carcinogen that
causes cancer, nicotine is addictive and increases cholesterol levels in your body and
carbon monoxide reduces oxygen in the body. Passive smoking is the inhalation of
smoke, called secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes many of the same
diseases as direct smoking, including cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and
respiratory diseases.

Smoking also greatly influences the surrounding atmosphere. It also causes air, water
and land pollution.

Impact of smoke-free policies on prevalence of tobacco smoking

Two reviews examined the relationship between tobacco control and prevalence of
smoking (5,23). The first review from the Cochrane group, specifically reported on eight
studies that examined the effect of public smoking bans on prevalence. The Cochrane
review found that smoking bans have a modest effect on active smoking (prevalence),
but a there was a clear trend towards the decrease of prevalence (5). Another similar
review included 20 studies, (23) three of which overlapped with the studies in the first
review (5). Overall, this review found moderate evidence for a decrease in prevalence
although a large majority of the studies showed a significant decrease in prevalence
after the ban. The percentage reduction in prevalence was as high as a 32% after 1 to
3.5 years of implementation of the ban on smoking in public places. In eight studies in
the second review, there was no change in prevalence. A total of ten studies selected
from the two reviews are summarized.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

Please Double check

We will only observe the effects of the cigarette smoke on plants particularly on the
color and number of leaves, weight and height of the plants and fruits produced. The
researchers will use the most affordable cigarette and fast-growing plant like mongo.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Smoking is leading cause of death and smoking initiation rarely occurs after
adolescents. Thus, research on adolescent smoking is crucial. A consider definition of
smoking is important because inconsistent definition make comparison across studies
on arduous task.

Carcinogens effects –
Carcinogens may increase the risk of cancer by altering cellular metabolism or
damaging DNA directly in cells, which interferes with biological processes, and induces
the uncontrolled, malignant divisions, ultimately leading to the formations of tumors.
