CHAIRING A MEETING
TRACK 2.3
INTERVIEW
CH = Chair Person, M = Michael, P = Paula, T = Tom, S = Susan
CH: Okay! The main item on the agenda is whether we should sell our store in Paris. I’d like to hear your opinion about this. But first of all, can you give us the background, Michael?
M: Yes. As you, all know open the store in the boulevard Jordan 5 years ago. We hoped it would be a base for expansion into other areas of France. But it hasn't been a success. It hasn't
attracted enough customers and it's made losses every year. As I see it, it's going to be very difficult to get a return on our investment.
P: I agree! There's no possibility it'll make a profit. It’s in the wrong location, there’s too much competition, and our products don't seem to appeal to French people. We should never have
entered the Market - We should sell out soon as possible!
T: I don’t agree with that at all! Things have gone wrong there, It's obvious. The management has let us down badly. The haven’t adapted enough to the market conditions. But it's far too
early to close the business down. I suggest, we bring in some marketing consultants - a French firm, if possible - and get them to review the business. We need more information about where
we're going wrong.
S: I totally agree with you! It's too early to close down the store, but I am worried about the stores location. We are an upmarket business, but most of the stores in the area have moved to
down-market, selling in the lower price ranges. That's a problem. I think we have to make changes - very soon. , our losses are increasing every year, we just can't go on like this. We may have
to revise our strategy. Maybe we made a mistake and choosing France for expansion.
CH: Well, thanks, for your opinions. I think, on balanced, we feel we should keep the store going for a while. So, the next thing to do is to appoint a suitable firm of marketing consultants to
find out what our problems are and make your recommendations. Personally, I'm convinced the store will be a success if we get the marketing mix right. We've got to get the store back into
profit, we've invested a lot of money in it.

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES
TRACK 2.4

INTERVIEW
IN = Interviewer, EJ = Elizabeth Jackson

IN: What are the qualities of a good business leader?

EJ: I'm going to ___________________________ five areas which I think are important, and I don't think that they are as complicated as many people believe. The first
that I would highlight is a ___________________________ of direction. A business leader needs to know where they are ___________________________ to go to and how they
are planning to get there. The second point I would want to highlight is courage. You need to have the courage to ___________________________ when to make the
right decision and how to, to push yourself forward - otherwise ___________________________ floods in. Thirdly, communication, um, because without that, you have
no ability to take people with you, and there's no point at all in plotting a course, arriving there and ___________________________ that you've left the troops behind.
The next point that I would highlight is respect. The ___________________________ with the people that you are working with and the respect that you have,
___________________________ those are people within the top level of individuals or indeed other people lower down within the ___________________________, is very
important in order to take people with you and to carry everything through. The last point that I would highlight is emotional ___________________________, and
that's the sensitivity that you have with the people around you. So that you are able to, um, understand where they are in the organization, how they behave in
the way that they do within the organization, and yet have the ___________________________ of head to be able to bring the ___________________________ down if you need
to.

IN: Do you think great business leaders are born or made?

EJ: It is a very big ___________________________ that. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that there are natural born leaders in life. And yet ___________________________,
there is there's a lot of evidence to ___________________________ that one can learn a great number of those skills. What I would say is this, when you're competing
against a natural born leader, the person who has acquired the skills will, I think, fail every time. And the things that a natural born leader possesses… are
things like ___________________________, intelligence, the ability to ___________________________ other people - those are very difficult skills to learn. And I think it's
perhaps interesting is an ___________________________ … to say this, I believe 20 of the first 23 astronauts in America were all first born. It may be a huge
___________________________, but my sense is that it probably isn't a coincidence and there is something about natural born leaders which, as I said It can be learnt
from, and people can ___________________________ their skill set, but they're unlikely to compete and win against them.

IN: Which leaders have impressed or influenced you, and why?

EJ: The first of them is, is ___________________________ my husband. I've been privileged to share a business life ___________________________, a home life, and my husband
is a few years older than me and therefore has ___________________________ the way, if you’d like, in terms of his business successes. But what I've
___________________________ in him is a tremendous tenacity and the ability to fight like a ___________________________ rat when he needs to, and that's, that's really rare
and very, very ___________________________ when you see it. I also see in him the ability to strike a chord with people, just by walking in the room. He
___________________________ a level of natural leadership and power, if you’d like. He also has an innate ability for inspired thinking, he works ahead of the pack and
I've learn a lot from that, so I probably am not a natural born ___________________________, but I have learnt an awful lot of skills from the likes of the
___________________________ I've worked with, particularly my husband. And his strategic thinking and being able to work ___________________________ the box, I think,
has been very, very powerful.
