Microbial Flora of Human Body
Microbial Flora of Human Body
Microbial Flora of Human Body
2. What are the factors influencing the normal microbial flora in the human body?
Explain and discuss
Local environment (pH, temperature, redox potential, O2, H2O, and nutrient
levels..), diet, age, health condition, genetics, antibiotics.
3. What are the difference between resident flora and Transient flora? Discuss.
Resident flora is generally harmless and nonpathogenic, while transient flora is
often pathogenic and is attached loosely to the skin.
4. What are the anatomical sites involved for normal microbial flora?
Normal microbial flora can be found in many sites of the human body including
the skin (especially moist areas, such us groin and between toes), respiratory tract
(particularly the nose), urinary tract, and the digestive tract (primarily mouth and
colon).
5. Give and Identify the important roles/benefits of normal microbial flora? Discuss.
They constitute a protective host defense mechanism by ecological niches; they
produce vitamin B and K in the intestine; oral flora contributes to immunity by inducing
low levels of circulating ang secretory antibodies that may cross react with pathogens;
oral bacteria flora exerts microbial antagonism against nonindigenous species by
production of inhibitory fatty acids, peroxides, bacteriocins, etc., to sum up normal flora
produces a substance which inhibits or kill nonindigenous species.
6. What is the main difference between the Probiotics/Prebiotics? Explain and discuss.
Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain food or supplements. Whereas,
prebiotics are types of fiber that feed the friendly bacteria in the digestive system.
