PREFACE
Welcome to my English Module!

This module is designed to guide you in your virtual study of English during the Covid-
19 pandemic. The content of this module closely follows the 2013 New Curriculum and
fits to meet your need of English. The methodology used is the communicative and
interactive approach as recommended in the curriculum.

This module consists of 5 chapters which are arranged into topics in order to make it
easier for you as well as the teacher to use the materials into this instruction. Each topic
is divided into some activities of learning which is grouped in to 3 kinds of learning
activities; Brainstorming or warming up as the Pre-activity, Main activity which is
performed in the reading and various kinds of exercises, Post activity which is designed
in some other exercises format and evaluation.

The exercises are designed in such kinds of activities and taken from many resources.
They are varied in several ways; some are designed interactively in which students do
the exercises online to enable them to get to know their scores soon after they finished
doing it. The exercises are chosen in such a way that they may fit the topic and the
students’ level of English as well. To do that, students just click on the links provided.
This is aimed to attract and encourage students in their efforts to learn independently,
as well as to challenge them to learn more through applying their previous knowledge
of English vocabularies and grammar when solving the exercises or tasks.

ACTIVITY 2 Main Acitivity
Reading and Practice

Vocabulary Building
Before moving to the reading practice, do the following vocabulary match to
help you understand the text.

Read the following text carefully!

Text 1
An email from Hannah

Hello Alia, Let me introduce myself. My name is Hannah.

I know your name from my friend, Caroline. She told me that you sent her an email telling
her that you would like to have more pen pals from the US. I’d really like to be your e-pal. You
sound really cool!
I guess I’d better tell you something about myself first. I am 16 years old and I attend Thomas
Edison High School here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I have two brothers and two half sisters
and I’m the midd;e child. My father died a few years ago so my mother runs the house and the
family business. My father is a barrista.
I have lots of hobbies. I like music – mostly classical music and folk music – but I don’t play
an instrument. I like sports, especially tennis and basketball. At school, I’m in the basketball team and
I spend most of my extra-curricular time playing basketball. I am into animals very much. My sister
and I have three dogs, a rabbit and an iguana. They need lots of attention as you can imagine. At
school, I have many Hmong friends who were not fully fluent in English. Their family moved here
from Asia. I enjoy talking to them about our different cultures. My favorite subjects at school are Art
and Geography. I think I’d like to become a park ranger when I graduate, perhaps work for the
National Parks Service.
I haven’t got much interest in fashion, although we have ‘Mall of America,’ the biggest mall
in Minnesota. We can reach the mall very easily. A commuter train runs every 15 minutes, buses
also come from different directions. We can also drive to the mall. It’s much faster than going there
by train or by bus.
I don’t like reading but I love drawing and painting.
How about you? Please drop me a line, Alia! Can’t wait to hear from you!

Hannah
English Module for Grade XI Semester 1 Page 9
The following text is another letter for Alia from Saidah. Read it carefully and see
some vocabularies usage!

Assalamualaikum Alia,

It was very interesting to read your letter about yourself and your hometown. I would
really like to be your pen friend.
I’m a sixteen-year-old school student from Johor Bahru in Malaysia. Actually I attend
an Islamic boarding school just outside the city but my family live in Kuala Lumpur. My eldest
sister is a medical doctor. She will get married soo. My younger brother is an elementary
school student in KL but he often writes to me via email.
My favorite subjects are Social Science. I like History very much; it helps me know
more how different countries existed in the past. At school, we are supposed to use English
at all times, even when we are in the dormitory. So, we have become quite fluent although
sometimes we slip back inti Malay which is our mother tongue.
As for hobbies, I’m really into songs and music. My favorite singer is Yusuf Islam
whose former name was Cat Steven. He’s so cool! Another singer I like is Maher Zain with
his religious songs. My favorite Malay singer is of course siti Nurhaliza. I also like watching
movies, especially comedies. The actor I like best is Tom Cruise.
I’m really into books. I like reading novels and short stories, mostly by Malay authors
who you probably haven’t heard of. I like some writers in English, like J.K. Rolling and
Indonesian writers too, like Andrea Hirata and Ahmad Fuadi. My dream, when I’m older is
to be a writer of science fiction books set in the distant future.
I’d really love to come to Indonesia some day. I heard that it has the largest number
muslims of any country. A book that I’ve just read mentions that there are some magnificent
places to visit, such as Bali, Sulawesi, Papua, and Borneo. What about you, do you want to
visit my country? Wassalam.

Cheers,

Saidah

Bayu : Stay at home? Come on man, you could do something more interesting.
Udin : So, what about you buddy? Do you have any plans?
Bayu : Definitely! My dad and I are going to fishing.
Udin : Fishing? It sounds boring too! Are you going to go fishing in the river near your

Bayu : Of course not! We plan to go fishing in the lake near my uncle’s house. Would you

Udin : Fishing? I don’t really like fishing. I would rather stay at home than go fishing.

Identification
the drum. Joining them are people called Wiyogo which are
drummers and other gamelan musicians.
What makes this unique is that they mix gamelan with the
sounds of nature. The visitors dance, forgetting all problems.
Many tourists go to this cave, maybe you are interested in
going there too but you don’t know where it is. Gua Tabuhan is
located near Pacitan in East Java. It is situated in a lime hill called
Tapan, in tabuhan, Wareng village. The route is easy. Along the
road there is beautiful tropical scenery to enjoy rice fields, coconut-
palms and birds.
East of cave peddlers sell souvenirs. The drink and food
peddlers are on the north side. People sell agates on the cave
terraces. Somehow, it is like a fair.
It is said that the cave is the only place where nature
produces sounds like the music of gamelan. Nyi Kamiyem, a well-
known pesinden (traditional Javanese singer) from the village of
Gabuhan, who often sings in the cave, does not doubt anything.
Gua tabuhan did not use to welcome visitors. According to Description
Kartowiryo (90), a village elder, Gua Tabuhan used to be a hiding
place for robbers. It was believed to be a sacred place. No one
dared go inside. However, Wedana (chief of a district)
Kertodiprojo, went to the cave to find out what is wrong. He found
out that the cave was inhabited by the annoying evil spirits. The
people chased the spirits away.
The cave is dark, so people need lights, and a local guide
will lead the way.sometimes visitors bump their heads against the
sharp rocks on the ceiling.
Inside the cave there is a plain big stone which is believed
to be the prayer mat of Pangeran Diponegoro, one of the
Indonesian heroes who fought against the Dutch. It is said that
Pangeran Diponegoro used to seclude himself in the cave. Some
people now use the place for meditation.
There is a stream in the cave, in the east corner, which can
only be seen outside. However, it can be heard from inside.
Besides the cave, watukarang, a beach nearby, is good to
visit. By the way, do you want different souvenirs? You can find
them in Donorojo village where agate craftsman work. So, have a
nice journey.

The Secret of Stonehenge

All over the globe are historical mysteries

left to us by the ancient world – lost civilizations,
abandoned cities, and puzzling monuments. One
unexplained mystery that has both inspired and
mystified modern man for centuries is Stonehenge.
Though it is one of the best-known artifacts in the
world, we have no definitive idea of why it was

English Module for Grade XI Semester 1 Page 49

built and what it was actually used for. Today,
however, two new investigations may offer some
ansers.
The first theory begins with findings being unearthed not at Stonehenge,
but at a location nearby. Archeologist Mike Parker Pearson and his colleagues have
been studying an area about three kilometres (two miles) northeast of Stonehenge.
Here stands Durrington Walls – a structure similar to Stonehenge but about 20
times larger. In and around Durington Walls were three circular structures made
of wood. Evidence suggests that these wooden circles were holy places, or perhaps
the residences of important officials who cared for Durrington. Outside
Durrington Walls, Parker Pearson and his colleagues have also recently discovered a
village of up to 300 houses which date back more than 4,500 years.
What do the findings at Durrington Walls have to do with Stonehenge?
Parker Pearson believes there is a connection between the two places, and he cites
his recent studies of the Malagasy cultures in Madagaskar to help explain his
theory. In Malagasy culture, stone is a symbol of hardened bones and death. Wood,
in contrast, is associated with life.
Using this model, Parker Pearson sees associations between the wooden
structures of Durrington and the hard monument of Stonehenge. Durrington, in
this new theory, is the domain of the living , while Stonehenge is a place of the
dead.
In Wales, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of Stonehenge,
archeologists have another theory about why the monument was built and what it
was used for. In this region of Wales are the Preseli Mountains. Archeologists have
traced the origin of Stonehenge’s oldest stones (often referred to as “bluestones’
because of their appearance when wet) to this site.
Stonehenge was one of the last great monuments built in ancient England. It
was abandoned about 3,500 years ago, and because its creators wrote no texts to
explain it, they have left us forever with one of history’s great puzzles to solve.
