Q1. In what way that the new amended Republic Act 11131 helps you and the others to pass the
Board Examination?
Q2. What are the advantages of this law?

My Answer:
In a way that makes it safe because strict board exams in criminology have been enacted by this
law RA 11131. Republic Act 11131 governs the examination, registration and licensure for
criminologist; supervision, control, and regulation of the practice of criminology, standardization
and regulation of criminology education; development of the professional competence of
criminologist; and integration of all criminology progressional groups.
The advantages of this law is a lot. According to RA 11131 or Philippine Criminology
Profession Act of 2018, exam takers must achieve a general average of 75 percent or at least 60
percent per subject in the exam. Criminology is taken by those who want to enter law
enforcement agencies such as the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Jail Management and
Penology, and Bureau of Fire Protection. Fallouts can only be repeated up to five times. If you
still fail the 5th test, the exam taker is obliged to take a refresher course before taking the exam
again. The law also empowers the Professional Regulation Commission to inspect it’s schools
and faculties, as well as the suspension and revocation of licences by criminologist who are
found to be committing malpractice.
According to Gerry Caño, president of the Professional Criminologist Association of the
Philippines, this will serve as a challenge for schools to improve their criminology program.

Q2. Is Criminology a science?

Yes, criminology is a science because when you study criminology you don’t just focus on
one area of a subject. Criminology is referred to as a “soft” science, similar to psychology,
sociology, anthropology or political science. Criminology is indeed a science because it is
empirical and it is based on Psychology. Also the name literally translates to “the study of
crime”. Criminology is a science. What is called, “Art” is actually good intelligence combined
with much training and experience. Officially, criminology is a science. However the fact that
crime is constantly evolving means that criminologist must continuously study it and develop
theories and solutions.
Criminology involves scientific investigation, deductive reasoning, and the skill to interact
with other people. So it is probably best described as a combination of the two with some of the
social science thrown in. The science of criminology has two basic objectives: to determine the
causes, whether personal or social, of criminal behavior and to evolve valid principles for the
social control of crime.
