2.1. A Plate 16mm x 250 mm tension member is connected with 6- 25mm ϕ bolts, as shown. The
steel is A242 with Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa. Compute the allowable strength for ASD.
Answer: _______________.
2.2. A double-angle tension member, 2L 75 x 50 x 8 LLBB, of A36 steel with F y= 250 MPa and Fu= 400 MPa is
subjected to a service load of DL= 55 KN and LL= 160 KN. It is connected to a gusset plate with 20 mm ϕ bolts
through the long leg. Does this member have enough strength? Assume Ae= 0.85A n. Use LRFD.
2.3. The tension member shown is a channel C12 x 25 of A572 steel with F y= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa. Will it
safely support a service DL= 275 KN and a service LL= 560 KN? Use equation for U.
2.4. A W18 x 46 of A992 steel with F y= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa is connected to a plate at each flange as shown.
Determine the allowable strength for ASD. Consider all limit states including block shear. Edge distance= 60 mm in
any direction, Use the alternative value of U.
2.5. A36 steel, with Fy= 250 MPa and Fu= 400 MPa, is used for the tension member shown.
Determine the design strength for LRFD.
2.6. The tension member shown is an angle L150 x 90 x 10. The bolts are 20 mm ϕ. If A36 steel, with F y= 250 MPa
and Fu= 400 MPa, is used, is the member adequate for a service DL= 150 KN and a service LL= 150 KN? Use ASD.
2.7 A WT9 x 17.5 of A992 steel (Fy= 345 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) is used as a tension member. The connection is
with 22 mm ϕ bolts as shown. Compute the allowable tensile strength fo ASD. Consider all limit states including
block shear.
2.8. Use LRFD and design the tension member for the bottom chord of the roof truss shown. Use double- angle
shape and assume 10 mm thick gusset plates and welded connections. Assume a shear lag factor of U= 0.80. The
trusses are spaced at 9 m. Use A36 steel (F y= 250 MPa and Fu= 400 MPa) and design for the following loads: Use
only the Metric Sizes Table for Angles in the ASEP Steel Handbook 2004. Consider all limit states.
Metal deck - 200 Pa
Built-up roof - 575 Pa
Purlins - 150 Pa of roof surface
Rain Load - 980 Pa of horizontal projection
Ceiling and Utilities – 125 Pa attached in the bottom chord
Truss weight - 250 Pa of horizontal projection, applied on the top chord
