Table 2 Illuminance measurement for a task / an activity

The room index and uniformity for the illuminance measurement of general and a task / an
activity should be calculated using the formula as shown in below [Guideline of Occupational
Safety and Health for Lighting at Workplace 2018] :
 General Lighting
Room index
Length of the room (L) : 6.93m
Wide of the room (W) : 5.7m
Height of lighting above the working plane (Hm) : 1.87m

LX W
Room Index ¿
Hm (L+ W )
6.93 X 5.7
Room Index ¿
1.87(6.93+5.7)
= 1.67m

The number of measurement points required : 9

Uniformity, U
Uniformity, U = Emin / Eaverage
= 164.1 / 177.23
= 0.9259

 A task / an activity
Uniformity, U
Uniformity, U = Emin / Eaverage
= 190.6 / 247.65
= 0.7696

The illuminance measurement for general lighting required 9 points. The total Lux/Fc is
1595.1, average Lux/Fc is 177.23, and uniformity is 0.9259. While, for illuminance
measurement for a task or an activity required 4 points. The total Lux/Fc is 990.6, average
Lux/Fc is 247.65 and uniformity is 0.7696. The recommended value Lux/Fc for general
lighting and a task or an activity is 500 based on the lighting requirement recommended for
various rooms and activities can be found in Appendix 1. To evaluate whether the
illuminance is adequate, the average illuminance is compared to the recommended
illuminance. The average value of the measurement for both general lighting and a task or an
activity is low than recommended illuminance.

1 Skylights or windows are used to
take advantage of day light
2 Workstations are arranged so that
work requiring strong light is done
near windows or under skylights.

3 Ceilings and walls are painted

white or in a light colour.
4 Multiple light sources are used at
workstations.
5 Lamps, windows and
workstations are positioned to
prevent glare.
6 Lighting fixtures are placed at a
high position or lamp shades
provided to prevent direct glare.
7 Blinds, curtains, louvers, shades,
trees and vines are used to prevent
or diminish direct glare from the
sun.
Light sources, machines or other
8 objects reflecting light are relo-
cated to prevent indirect glare.
9 Lamps are placed high to provide
evenly distributed general lighting.

10 Local lamps are used to provide

adequate light required for detailed
work
11 Moveable local lamps with
flexible arms are provided
12 Direction of light sources is selected
considering the type of task.

13 General and local lighting are

combined to provide necessary light
and prevent large contrasts in
brightness.
