WHAT IS FEED CHECK VALVE?

Feed Check Valves are one of the most important components of boiler which
control the flow of water from feed pump to the boiler and further prevents the
backflow of water from boiler to pump when the boiler pressure is more than the
pump pressure or when feed pump stops working. Feed check valves are a
development of our boiler valve range of Screw-down Stop Valves and the design
makes use of a conventional Angle Pattern Stop Valve to which is connected a
separate inlet branch which houses the check valve. This check inlet branch is of
unique design in that the check valve head and its guide are arranged below the face
of the connecting flange enabling the branch to be withdrawn without disturbing
the feed piping.

8
With the stop valve closed this feature permits speedy examination and
maintenance of the check valve seating’s when the boiler is under steam. For
temperatures up to saturated steam at 263 lbf/in2 the check valve also is of special
design incorporating a resilient seal to provide completely tight shut-off when the
boiler pump cuts out, an essential feature for installations where a centrifugal pump
is employed.
The function of a feed check valve is to control the flow of water from the feed
pump to the boiler and to prevent the backflow of water from the boiler to the
pump when the pump pressure is less than the boiler pressure or when the feed
pump ceases to work.

DETAILS
Parts of Feed Check Valve: -
Following are the main parts of a knuckle joint:

1. Body
2. Valve Seat
3. Valve
4. Cover
5. Spindle
6. Gland
7. Stud & Nut
8. Handle

10
1. Valve Body
It is the main structure comprising all parts, holding each component in
position.
2. Valve Seat
The seat on which valve seats.
3. Valve
It is part of the valve body that restricts the flow amount of fluid that is
not required.
4. Cover
It is used to cover valve body.

5. Spindle
It The main component carrying the valve on which a force is applied
manually or automatically, in order to make the valve work.

6. Gland
The part of the valve which retains or compresses the stem packing in a
stuffing box.
7. Stud & Nut
Stud is used to operate the spindle. Nut is screwed onto the external
threaded stud and external threading of the spindle.
8. Handle
It is wheel connected to spindle, with the help of which an operator can
control the flow of fluid by spinning it manually.

Material used to make Feed Check Valve: -

11
o 316 Stainless Steel—The most popular material for check valves based on volume,
stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant material, so it stays fairly rust free in applications like
water, moist air, and steam. It is a relatively low-cost material in relation to its corrosion-
resistant properties.

o Carbon Steel – Carbon Steel is a lower cost material that is easier to machine.
Overall, expenses can be reduced by using carbon steel, however, it doesn’t have the same
corrosion-resistant properties as stainless steel. If the application is in a dry environment,
such as dry gas or a hydraulic liquid that doesn’t have water in it, then carbon steel is
effective and there is no need to pay extra for stainless.

o Brass – In many applications, brass falls somewhere between carbon and stainless
steel when it comes to corrosion resistance and price. Brass has some additional corrosion-
resistant properties over carbon steel and it is easier to machine than stainless steel. Brass
is used often in water and drinking water applications.

o Monel – Monel is a group of nickel alloys and considered a super alloy. Its biggest
advantage its really high corrosion resistance. Monel is specifically known to be effective in
saline, salt, or seawater environments. Each super alloy has different chemical resistant
properties. Some do well in one environment where others may do well in a different
environment.

o Alloy 20 – Alloy 20 is an austenitic alloy that many consider to be a hybrid between
stainless and other super alloys. It’s typically not as expensive as a many super alloys, but
it’s more highly corrosion resistant than a traditional stainless steel in certain applications.

o Alloy c-276 – Alloy c-276 is a solid solution strengthened nickel-molybdenum-

chromium alloy with a small amount of tungsten. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance
in a variety of harsh environments and media. Like other nickel alloys, it is ductile, easily
formed and welded. It is used in most industrial settings where aggressive chemical
environments are present and other alloys have failed.

o Titanium – Titanium is an alloy that is used in very high temperatures.

o Inconel – Inconel is an austenitic nickel-chromium-based super alloy. It is an

oxidation corrosion-resistant material well suited for extreme environments subjected to
pressure and heat. This can often be used when customers want something similar to
stainless.

12
Advantage of using Feed Check Valve: -
Following are the advantages of using Feed check valve:

1) Prevents backflow
2) Maintains pressure
3) Serves as backup system
4) Most can be used horizontally as well as vertically

Disadvantage of using Feed Check Valve: -

Knuckle joints give most of the benefits but they also have some drawbacks, which are
as follows:

1) Can't be used with pulsating systems

2) Closing element may slam close causing damage and excessive wear
