TITANIUM DIOXIDE
Titanium dioxide is a fine white powder that occurs naturally. It was first intentionally
produced for use as a white pigment in 1923. It is naturally opaque and bright, which makes
it useful for use in paper, ceramics, rubber, textiles, paints, and cosmetic.

ADVANTAGES:

 As a pigment, TiO2 has excellent light-scattering properties and is used in a variety of

applications that require white opacity and brightness.

 It absorbs UV light. When TiO2 pigment is incorporated in a polymer, it minimizes degradation of

the system (embrittlement, fading and cracking). Surface treating of the TiO2 can further
improve this property. When used in paint or coating system, this effect ensures the longevity of
the paint and the continued protection of the substrate.

 The use of light colored paints for interior applications provides an impression of openness and
“space”. In addition, the high "luminosity" that comes from light colored paints reduces the
energy needed to light the interior of buildings when compared to darker colors.

DISADVANTAGES:

 Carcinogenic- Evidence suggests that some nanoparticles may induce toxic effects in your brain
and cause nerve damage, and some may also be carcinogenic. The International Agency for
Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies titanium dioxide as a Group 2B carcinogen, which means
it’s “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

GLYCERIN
Glycerin is a neutral, sweet-tasting, colorless, thick liquid which freezes to a gummy paste and which
has a high boiling point. Glycerin can be dissolved into water or alcohol, but not oils. On the other
hand, many things will dissolve into glycerin easier than they do into water or alcohol. So it is a good
solvent.
Glycerin is reported to function in cosmetics as a denaturant; fragrance ingredient; hair
conditioning agent; humectant; oral care agent; oral health care drug; skin protectant;
skin-conditioning agent - humectant; and viscosity decreasing agent.
ADVANTAGES:

 Absorbs moisture – It can absorb and retain moisture from the air to keep the skin well-toned,
moisturized and hydrated. Using products with this ingredient improves the hydration of the
outer skin layer. It also decreases the intensity of melanin, a skin darkening pigment.

 Strengthens skin barrier – It increases the thickness of the epidermal layer and improves
barrier function. This means that the harmful chemicals stay out of the skin and moisture
stays in.

 Removes dead cells – Our skin cells are held together with the help of proteins. These
proteins also clump the dead cells together which prevents new ones from forming.

DISADVANTAGES:

 It is not advised to use pure glycerin during hot and dry weather, as it can cause the skin
to lose its moisture and form blisters.

 There are some personal lubricant products that contain pure glycerin. They can cause
yeast infections in women.

 While natural glycerin is good for skin, some forms of synthetic version of this
ingredient, found in some skincare products, can be harmful.

TALC
Talc is a clay mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula
H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. In loose form, it, along with corn starch, was one of the most widely
used substances known as baby powder (in the case of talc, often called simply talcum powder (see
litigation.)) It occurs as foliated to fibrous masses, and in an exceptionally rare crystal form. It has a
perfect basal cleavage, and the folia are not elastic, although slightly flexible.

ADVANTAGES:

 Talc can soothe dry skin and treat eczema

Talcum powder can work like a moisturiser to help soothe extra-dry skin. If you have
areas of irritated skin, rub a bit of talcum powder in to calm it.

 Use talc to set your make-up

Talc can absorb and remove facial oils, acting as a primer to help set your makeup for the
day or night and prevent you from looking too shiny. Talcum powder can also be mixed
with a powder or bronzer that is a bit too dark to lighten it up.
 Talc can prevent chafing

On a hot summer’s day or before you begin exercising, try dusting some talcum powder
between your thighs to prevent chafing. It will help to eliminate friction when you run so
your skin will stay smooth and pain-free avoiding the risk of sores.

DISADVANTAGES:

Carcinogenic- According to The Cancer Prevention Coalition talc is closely related to the
potent carcinogen asbestos. Talc particles have been shown to cause tumors in the ovaries
and lungs of cancer victims.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Extract

Is an off-white or ivory-colored fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria
paradoxa). Shea butter is a triglyceride (fat) derived mainly from stearic acid and oleic acid.
It is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer, salve or lotion.

ADVANTAGES:

 As an emollient and moisturizer, shea butter helps repair the skin and is an effective remedy for
dark spots, wrinkles, stretch marks and sunburn. Its healing properties help treat minor burns,
small wounds and insect bites.
 Shea butter contains arachidic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and
stearic acid of which stearic and oleic acids are the highest. Oleic oil has moisturizing properties
and is used as an ingredient in many skin care products (especially in butter cream products).
 Shea butter is an anti-aging ingredient. It solution for fighting wrinkles because of the rich of
vitamins A and E it contains.

DISADVANTAGES:

 The shea nut is grown with pesticides (which long term we don’t know the damage this
causes-which could relate to skin issues not resolving them).

 Oily skin you should not use Shea butter or petroleum as it causes excess oil (sebum)
production.

TETRASODIUM EDTA
Tetrasodium ETDA (which stands for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a water-soluble
ingredient used as a “chelator,” which means it binds to certain mineral ions to inactivate
them. Through this action, it can prevent the deterioration of cosmetic and personal care
products, as it stops the growth of mold and other microorganisms. Tetrasodium EDTA also
helps maintain clarity, protect fragrance compounds, and prevent rancidity. One of its main
uses it to help personal care products works better in hard water.

ADVANTAGES:
 Can be used as a preservative and a chelating agent
 No known toxicity to the skin

DISADVANTAGES:

 This chemical has been known to cause skin irritation

 Tetrasodium EDTA may contribute to the development of cancer
 Tetrasodium EDTA may potentially cause reproductive problems in high doses

SODIUM CHLORIDE

ADVANTAGES:

 Salt is a natural antihistamine. A pinch of salt sprinkled on the tongue may help
improve an allergic reaction or an asthma attack
 Salt improves sleep quality. It boasts anti-stress and anti-excitatory qualities due to its
suppression of stress hormones and it increasing of the metabolic rate.
 Increased sodium intake also correlates with increased thermogenesis–heat
production by the body

DISADVANTAGES:

 It can trigger stroke, vascular dementia, asthma and etc.

LAURIC ACID
Lauric acid is a particular type of fatty acid found in saturated-fat foods. The single best
source of lauric acid is coconuts, and in fact many of the benefits of coconut oil that have
been well-established in research settings are due to the presence of lauric acid.

ADVANTAGES:

Has Strong Antimicrobial and Antiviral Properties

Study after study shows the impressive immune-enhancing effects that lauric acid is capable
of producing in the human body. Among 30 different fatty acids studied for their
antibactericidal properties, lauric acid came out as number one! Data from a study published
in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Journal indicate that C12 (lauric acid) is the most
inhibitory saturated fatty-acid against harmful organisms.

Benefits Skin Health and Naturally Fights Acne

The strong bactericidal properties of lauric acid can be used to effectively and naturally treat
acne. Studies have demonstrated that lauric acid works as an antibiotic treatment method
against Propionibacterium bacteria that causes acne breakouts on the skin. This bacteria
promotes follicular inflammation (inflammatory acne), especially when other skin bacteria
are present including P. acnes, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Staphylococcus
epidermidis (S. epidermidis).

Preserves Foods and Prevents Spoilage

As a saturated fat, lauric acid is insoluble in water and shelf-stable. This is one reason that
coconut oil is sometimes highly modified and added to things like natural skin
care products, food products and animal feeds to stabilize their texture and appearance.
Industrial uses for lauric acid and its derivatives include making soaps, lotions, wetting
agents, rubbers, softeners, detergents and insecticides. While this type of refined coconut oil
loses most of its benefits, unmodified lauric acid can help prevent rancidity and extend shelf
life of perishable foods

DISADVANTAGES:
Eye Irritation

 Lauric acid can cause burning and irritation if it gets in the eyes. If lauric acid gets in your
eyes, remove contacts, if necessary, and rinse the eyes with water. Seek transportation to the
emergency room immediately after exposure, but do not attempt to drive yourself. If
necessary, call for an ambulance to convey you.

Skin Irritation

 Skin irritation is common with exposure to lauric acid. Remove all contaminated clothing as
soon as exposure occurs. Rinse the affected area of skin under running water and scrub it with
a non-exfoliating soap. Pay extra attention to deep wrinkles or folds in the skin to ensure all
the acid gets washed away. Pat the skin dry and apply a deep moisturizer. Seek medical
attention only if irritation worsens or persists after 24 hours.
