QUESTIONS

1. Write the names of main commercial types of geothermal power plants.

2. Draw a general hydrothermal geothermal model and indicate where the fumaroles can be
observed.
3. Explain the difference of fumaroles and geysers.
4. Where was the initial dry-steam power engine used, when and by who?
5. What is the average dry-steam unit rating, how many MWh?
6. What are the main characteristics of the dry-steam reservoirs?
7. How many models (or possibilities) for the fluid behaviour mechanism can be proposed in a
dry-steam reservoir?
8. What is the difference between the steam purifier and the moisture remover?
9. What is the task of a steam trap?
10. Draw the parts of emergency steam relief valve.
11. Draw a venturi meter and explain what is the task of this unit?

ANSWERS

1. There are four commercial types of geothermal power plants. These are; Dry steam
power plants, flash power plants, binary power plants and flash/binary combined
power plants.
2.

Figure 1: Sketch for observing fumaroles

3. The difference between fumarole and geyser is that the fumarole is a steam vent
while the geyser are the bursts of boiling hot water that comes from below the
surface. In addition, to geysers occur in formation, an appropriate rock type,
subterranean heat, and good amount of water is needed.

4. It is used to achieve commercial power generation. It is founded by Prince Piero

Ginori Conti and used as early steam engine using natural gas in 1904 at
Lardello,Tuscany, Italy.

5. It is around 40MWh.

6. The main characteristics of dry steam reservoirs are; they are porous and include
many fissures and fractures. In addition, they are filled with steam.

7. There are Dry Steam Power Plant, Dry Steam Non-Condensing Geothermal Power
Plant and Dry-Steam condensing power plant can be proposed in Dry -steam
reservoir.
8. An air purifier is used to clean the air by removing or otherwise “inactivating”
pollutants from the air. In contrary, moisture remover does not clean the air. It
simply adds water to the air by boiling water into steam, vibrating water droplets
into the air or by evaporating the water using a fan.

9. Steam traps are a type of automatic valve that filters out condensate and non-
condensable gases such as air without letting steam escape.
