I. Solving Problems.
1. A flexible pavement has a structural number of 3.8 (all drainage coefficients are equal to 1.0). The initial
PSI is 4.7 and the terminal serviceability is 2.5. The soil has a CBR of 9. The overall standard deviation is
0.40 and the reliability is 95%. The pavement is currently designed for 1800 equivalent 18-kip single-axle
loads per day. If the number of 18-kip single-axle loads were to increase by 30%, by how many years
would the pavement’s design life be reduced?
2. Determine the tensile stress imposed at night by a wheel load of 750 lb located at the edge of a
concrete pavement with the following dimensions and properties.
Pavement thickness = 8.5 in.
𝜇 =0.15
Ec = 4.2 x 106 lb/𝑖𝑛2
k = 200 lb/𝑖𝑛3
Radius of loaded area = 3 in.
4. A six-lane concrete roadway is being designed for a metropolitan area. This roadway will be
constructed on a subgrade with an effective modulus of subgrade reaction k of 170 lb/𝑖𝑛3 . The ESAL used
for the design period is 2.5 x 106 . Using the AASHTO design method, determine a suitable thickness of
the concrete pavement (to the nearest 1 ⁄2 inch), provided that the working stress of the concrete to be
used is 650 lb/𝑖𝑛2 and the modulus of elasticity is 5 x 106 lb/𝑖𝑛2 . Assume the initial serviceability is 4.75
and the terminal serviceability is 2.5. Assume the overall standard deviation, 𝑆𝑜 as 0.35, the load transfer
coefficient J as 3.2, the drainage coefficient, 𝐶𝑑 as 1.15, and R as 95%
