Warning: When choosing cable runs, do not place cables in walkways or standing areas. Also, do
not run cables near sources of excessive heat, such as engines or air conditioning units, as this will
damage cable integrity leading to shorts and expose the system to electrical fires.
This guide contains the following Warning notice on page 14:
Warning: Make sure you cut the blue and blue/white wires when terminating the cable with the
RJ45 connector or you will damage the laptop or PTXC unit or both.
This guide contains the following Warning notice on page 28:
Warning: If you plan to use a mounting plate and weld it in place, weld the plate to the mounting
surface first and then install the components on the plate. Otherwise, you may damage the
components.
This guide contains the following Warning notice on page 49:
Warning: To help prevent multipath errors and signal loss, any metallic structure (masts, panels,
boxes, etc.) within two feet of any GPS antenna should never be above the antenna's ground plane
height. As a general rule, the antenna's view of the sky to the horizon should be as free from metallic
obstructions as possible.
This guide contains the following Warning notice on page 49:
Warning: Do not supply power to the N231 radio unless the radio is connected to an antenna, or
you may damage the radio.
• Protect all MMS components with welding protection materials. Welding protection materials
may include welding blankets, welding curtains, and/or welding screens. The welding protection
materials must be high heat resistant, non-flammable, non-melting, and spark-resistant. The
materials should be used to isolate, cover, and protect all MMS hardware components (hardware,
enclosures, conduit, coax cables, power cables/wires, wiring harnesses, antennas, etc.) from:
•Sparks
•Welding slag
•Molten metal
•Extreme high heat
•Arc from heavy welding
•The torch flame
• DO NOT connect welding ground leads directly to any MMS hardware, enclosures, masts, etc.
• DO NOT lay welding cables over or near the equipment/vehicle electrical harnesses. Welding
voltage may be induced into the electrical harness and cause damage to components.
• All finished welds must be fully covered with rust-inhibiting paint. The paint color should
match the color of the surrounding base surface and should be approved by the controlling
maintenance department for each equipment type.
• Modular recommends that all welds be periodically inspected as part of standard system
checks, and repaired or re-painted as necessary if cracks or other defects are visible.

1 Cut the RJ45 connector off the end of Ethernet cable 106112.
2 Terminate the cable with a new RJ45 connector (107766). Terminate it without the blue and
white/blue wires. Follow the instructions in crimping guide Proc Conn RJ-45 Large OD Wire No
PWR (PN 250038).
Warning: Make sure you cut the blue and white/blue wires when terminating the cable with the
RJ45 connector or you will damage the laptop or PTXC unit or both.
3 Connect the modified Ethernet cable (106112) between the PTXC and the laptop.
a Attach the coupling nut on the modified Ethernet cable to the back of the PTXC.
b Attach the “new” RJ45 connector on the modified Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port on the
laptop.
2 Configure your laptop IP address to be on the same subnet as the Ethernet 2 IP address:
d Right-click the laptop’s Ethernet connection icon, such as Local Area Connection, and select
Properties from the menu.
g Type an IP address that is on the same subnet as the PTX Ethernet 2 IP address but is different
than the Ethernet 2 IP address. For instance, if the PTX Ethernet 2 IP address is the default
192.168.0.112, you could type IP address 192.168.0.2
i Click OK.
a Open a command prompt on the laptop and enter ping <PTXC Ethernet 2 IP address>.
A positive result means that there is a successful connection between the PTXC and laptop via
Ethernet 2.
Note: If ping is not successful, check the cable and other connections.
7 If the PoE is disabled, press enter to display a new command line. Then, enable PoE by entering
poe12vsetup enable enable.
8 Check the status again by entering the poe12vsetup status command in the next line. The
command must return a status of “enabled” for both clean12V and PoE, as shown below. If so, PoE
for Ethernet port 2 and power for CAN are now successfully enabled.
2 Disconnect the modified Ethernet cable from the PTXC unit and laptop.

Warning: If you plan to use a mounting plate and weld it in place, weld the plate to the
mounting surface first and then install the components on the plate. Otherwise, you may damage
the components.
a If you can access the back side of the mounting surface, drill through-holes for the power supply
and secure the power supply with the hardware provided.
b If you cannot access the back side of the mounting surface, secure the power supply with
self-tapping screws.
Important: You must get mine approval to use self-tapping screws. Do NOT mount the power
supply to a vertical surface using self-tapping screws. With mine approval, you can mount the power
supply to a horizontal surface, using self-tapping screws.
3 Measure the voltage at the vehicle power source. The voltage should be + 2VDC for 12 volt systems
or + 2 VDC for 24 volt systems.
If the voltage is out of range, check the connections and cable continuity. Then verify any changes
that you make by testing for correct voltage again. If necessary, ask the mine electrician for an
alternate connection location.
4 Ground the power supply to chassis ground by attaching a ground strap and locking washer to the
ground stud found on the housing.
6 Connect the wire harness Input wires (solid red and solid black wires) to the vehicle power source:
a Install the 32 volt, 5 amp blade fuse onto the solid red wire (1).
b Using the provided connectors, connect the solid red wire (1) to the positive (+) terminal (red)
at the vehicle power source.
c Using the provided connectors, connect the solid black wire (2) to vehicle ground (black).

24V DC
Power Source
1 2
Important: If extra length is needed, splice the wire harness input wires onto vehicle power
source cable 105657. Then attach cable 105657 to the power source.
7 Measure the power supply output voltage. The output voltage should be 24 VDC ±0.5 VDC.
If the voltage is out of range, check the connections and cable continuity. Then verify any changes
that you make by testing for correct voltage again.
8 Connect the wire harness Output wires (red/white and black/white wires) to the power
distribution terminal:
a Using the provided connectors, connect the red/white wire (1) to a positive (+) terminal on the
power distribution terminal.
b Using the provided connectors, connect the black/white wire (2) to a ground (-) terminal on the
power distribution terminal.
9 If the vehicle has an ignition/accessory switch, measure the voltage between the positive (+)
terminal at the ignition/accessory switch and the negative (-) terminal at the vehicle power source:
a Measure the voltage with the switch OFF. The voltage should be 0 VDC.
b Measure the voltage with the switch ON. The voltage should be +12 VDC (±2 VDC) or +24 VDC
(±2 VDC).
If the voltage is out of range, check the connections and cable continuity. Then verify any
changes that you make by testing for correct voltage again.
Power cable 304116 connects the PTXC unit to the power distribution terminal and the accessory/
ignition switch, if present.
The power cable is pre-terminated on one end with a Deutsch connector. The other end is
unterminated and has red, black, and white wires.
The power cable Deutsch connector attaches to the Deutsch connector on the PTXC cable harness
power IN cable. The power cable red wire connects to a positive (+) terminal on the power
distribution terminal. The black wire connects to a ground (-) terminal on the power distribution
terminal.
If an accessory/ignition switch is not present, you can connect the white wire to a positive (+)
terminal on the power distribution terminal or connect the red and white wires to the same positive
(+) terminal. If an accessory/ignition switch is present, the white wire connects directly to the
accessory/ignition switch, or to the power distribution terminal, where it contacts a second white
wire that connects to the accessory/ignition switch.
a Considering the scenarios above, measure and cut the wires on PTXC power cable 304116 to
length and terminate according to DWG-4023907.
b Connect the red wire ring terminal to a positive (+) terminal on the power distribution terminal.
c Connect the black wire ring terminal to a ground (-) terminal on the power distribution
terminal.
d If the equipment does not have an accessory/ignition switch, connect the white wire ring
terminal to a positive (+) terminal on the power distribution terminal or connect it to the same
positive (+) terminal as the red wire.

17.0 Install the N231 Radio, Omni Antenna, and GPS Antenna
Warning: To help prevent multipath errors and signal loss, any metallic structure (masts, panels,
boxes, etc.) within two feet of any GPS antenna should never be above the antenna's ground plane
height. As a general rule, the antenna's view of the sky to the horizon should be as free from metallic
obstructions as possible.
Warning: Do not supply power to the N231 radio unless the radio is connected to an antenna, or
you may damage the radio.
You install the N231 radio in the cab and the omni antenna (1) and GPS antenna (2) directly on the
roof. The omni antenna uses magnetic mounting bracket 305415. The GPS antenna can use a magnetic
mounting bracket or bracket with weld plates.
2

17.3 Install the Omni Antenna and Connect it to the N231 Radio
You connect the omni antenna to the N231 radio, using LMR-400 Ultraflex (UF) cable 305550. The
cable is factory terminated with a right-angle connector.
You route the LMR-400 cable from the omni antenna on the cab roof to the N231 radio in the cab, using
3/4-inch flexible conduit.
1 Measure the conduit run from the cab exit hole to the omni antenna bracket.
3 Mark the locations for each conduit clamp and have the welder weld the clamps in place.
4 Attach one conduit fitting from conduit kit 304896 to the end of the conduit that will attach to the
cab exit hole. Do not connect the fitting to the exit hole at this point.
2 3
2
1
15 Pass the LMR-400 cable into the cab exit hole and secure the conduit to the exit hole with the
conduit fitting.
16 At the radio location in the cab, cut the LMR-400 UF cable to length, leaving extra cable for a
service loop.
17 Terminate the LMR-400 cable with straight N-F connector 107970, according to the Proc Conn
107970 N-F CR/CR LMR-400UF document (PN 250064).
18 Thread connector 107970 onto the surge arrestor neck at the top of the radio.
19 Wrap the connectors with self-fusing, rubber splicing tape 102225, completely covering the
connectors and a minimum of 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the heat shrink. Then wrap the end of the splicing
tape with black vinyl electrical tape 103497.
To install the GPS antenna, you route conduit and LMR-400 GPS cable 304697 from the cab exit hole
near the GPS receiver to the location where you will install the GPS antenna. You then install the GPS
antenna on the cab roof or on the optional antenna riser, depending on the parts ordered:
• Install Conduit and the GPS Cable on page 60
• Install the GPS Antenna on the Cab Roof on page 61
Important: Choose the most direct path for conduit routing from the cab exit hole to the GPS
antenna location that complies with the mine safety requirements.
1 Measure the conduit run between the cab exit hole and the location on the cab roof where you will
install the GPS antenna.
2 Mark the locations for each conduit clamp and have the welder weld the clamps in place.
3 Attach one conduit fitting from conduit kit 304896 to the end of the conduit that will attach to the
cab exit hole. Do not connect the fitting to the exit hole at this point.
4 Starting from inside the cab, route the LMR-400 GPS cable out the exit hole and through the
conduit. Leave enough GPS cable in the cab to make a service loop.
5 Inside the cab, secure the routing of the GPS cable with cushion clamps and tie wraps. Make sure
the clamps and wraps do not pinch the GPS cable. Neatly gather any excess cable length in a
protected area, and secure it with cable ties.
6 From outside the cab, secure the conduit to the exit hole with the conduit fitting you assembled in
step 3.
4 Assemble the conduit fitting and fitting seal onto the LMR-400 GPS cable:
