Nurses are responsible for ensuring that patient have the best possible
understanding of their health, illness, drugs, and treatments. A nurse should also take
the time to explain the self-care procedures that must be taken, why it is vital to maintain
self-care, how to detect warning signs, and what to do if a problem arises. In addition,
the nurse should make sure that the patient feels supported and that they know who to
contact if they need further information.

A nurse can ensure patient comprehension by establishing rapport, adjusting

teaching strategies to the patient's preferences, using common words to make it easier
for the patient to understand, and providing instructional materials such as reading
materials, video and audio recordings. In order to ensure that a patient understands
medical requirements, a hands-on approach is essential. Nurses should demonstrate
the process and have patients repeat it back to them or execute it themselves. In
addition to that, willingness of then patient to learn and participate is a key in ensuring
patient comprehension.
