LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Title: The Sand Castle


Grade Level: 2-3
Standards (List specific SOLs that pertain specifically to YOUR objectives).
Virginia Standards: (SOL)
2.3 Play a variety of pitched and non-pitched instruments alone and with others, including (3)
accompanying songs and chants with ostinatos and single chords
2.5 the student will respond to movement with movement including demonstrating expressive
qualities of music
2.6 student will create music by improvising accompaniments, including ostinatos

Objectives: (List specific, assessable items you want students to KNOW and BE ABLE TO DO).
As a result of the instruction, students will be able to: (observable skills- action verbs)
 Chant the chant with 90% accuracy
 Play any of the ostinatos with rhythm instruments
 Perform any of the body percussion ostinatos
 Compose and perform their own body and rhythm ostinatos

Materials (List the instructional materials you will need or use for the lesson. Why? I will know
that you know what you need to teach the lesson and will not be running around the room to find
something you forgot.)

Poster board with lyrics written out


Rhythm ostinatos on papers for them to see
Music stands
Rhythm instruments

Modifications: (List any modifications in the instructional setting or room that you must make for
any child who has special needs. Could be child with a broken leg. It could be using a microphone
for a child with a hearing deficiency. Has anyone encountered this yet?)

If a child has a hearing deficiency, I will bring them to the front of the classroom or use a
microphone during the lesson.

Procedures:
(1 min): Stretch and warm up

(4 min): Learning the Chant & Motions


 I will break the chant into sections doing each line individually then two lines at a time then
the whole thing
 learn motions (strong: arms up like muscles, wave: do a wave with your hands, whoops:
clap hands, gone: hands up as if confused)

(4 min): Learning Ostinati


 Body percussion ostinato (pat, clap, pat, clap)
 Orff instrument ostinato and add to the chant (ask for volunteer)
 Rhythmic ostinato 1 (castle castle sand sand) on
 Rhythmic ostinato 2 (beach beach beach lets go)
 Run through it, switching the music stands to different groups

(5 min): Composing Rhythmic Ostinato & Performing


 Have students compose rhythmic ostinato in groups of 2 or 3
 Have some students come up and perform for the class

how well can they do/apply/use the objectives?” Go back to the top of this format- your
