Easter Pie Sale

By Jake Q.

On April 3rd, 2021, the Boy Scouts

of Troop 284 gathered together at the First
Presbyterian church, to deliver pies to
those who had ordered. This delivery
lasted from 12pm in the afternoon to 2pm.
This pie sale and pie delivery were a huge
success, with over 300 pies ordered and
delivered in a span of an afternoon. There
was a large variety of pies, consisting of
favors such as blueberry, raspberry,
blackberry, lemon meringue, pumpkin pie,
and more! This pie delivery consisted of
people driving through the church parking
lot to get their pies quickly and efficiently
delivered to them. Once the person
waiting in line said their name, a scouts
would the retrieve and deliver their pies to
their car. This pie sale was one of the most
successful turnouts we have ever had,
despite Covid-19,

The Troop 284 mulch delivery was on the 23rd and 24th of April. Over the
course of these two days, we were able to deliver over two thousand five
hundred bags of mulch. It is amazing that we were able to deliver that much
mulch in only nine hours. We had a large amount of the troop show up to help
with the delivery as well as lots of people bringing trucks and trailers to help us
with the sale. Thanks to Busy Beaver for letting us use their parking lot in this
amazing fundraiser.
Welding Merit Badge PAGE 4
By Michael M.

After learning a bit about the trade through a lecture, members of

Troop 284 attended the Welding Merit Badge course, compliments of
Mr. Quaka. Scouts were taught about proper safety procedures and
equipment, and then were able to partake in welding themselves.
Scouts learned to MIG weld butt joints, lap joints, and tee joints. They
were even able to weld their initials into a metal plate. Troop 284 is
incredibly glad to have had the opportunity to use the Westmoreland
Community College, under the help of Mr. Quaka, to learn a little about
the trade of welding.

Spring Court of Honor PAGE 5

After half a year of dedication and hard work, Troop 284 awarded its scouts
through a spring Court of Honor. After a brief speech and reflection by Mr. Dzaack and
Troop leaders, merit badges and ranks were awarded to the scouts of Troop 284
during the ceremony. Nearly every scout earned a commendable number of merit
badges and awards. The scouts who advanced in rank, pictured on the bottom, also
made a great effort to rank up during the previous six months. Jake Q. was able to
advance two ranks at this ceremony. After the scouts were presented with their hard-
earned ranks and awards, they were able to eat complimentary cupcakes and
refreshments. Every member of Troop 284 truly made a great effort in acquiring merit
badges and ranks over the preceding months, as evidenced by the multitudinous
awards presented at the ceremony.
Raccoon State Park “Outback” Outing PAGE 6

Troop 284 went camping at Raccoon
State Park. We tent camped and did
patrol cooking. Each patrol created a
menu for each of the meals. Some of
the meals included were calzones,
moons of Miami and pancakes. For
dinner the troop ate the famous trash
can turkey with each patrol adding
their own dish to the feast. The new
scouts received their neckerchiefs
along with a custom tie for it. The
troop hiked and played volleyball to
pass the time while waiting for dinner.

May’s Heritage Outing 6

The Heritage letter was a successful and fun weekend. We arrived and set up, had a
cracker barrel and assigned jobs for the troop before securing camp for the night. We woke
up the next morning and the troop had a waffle bar. After breakfast, we went out and did
some canoe safety and then got in and practiced in them in preparation for the upcoming
Maine outing next summer. The troop performed well on the water and thankfully nobody
cap-sized and we all had a good time. The buddy groups made lunches which were quick
and simple so that we could get back to the program which consisted of fishing from the
docks and in canoes and kayaks. Most of the boys in the troop went on a group trip across
Lake Courage to the other side and back. The dinner went well. Two buddy groups
consisting of AJ, Brendan, Zach, and Alex made Beef Wellington, garlic asparagus, Colby
jack cauliflower and creme brulee for dinner which turned out very well. The next morning
consisted of quick breakfasts and the troop tested how fast they could cook, clean, pack up
and be out of camp. Which is something we need to do to prepare for the Maine trip. We
successfully left camp before 10 AM. The weekend was a success in my eyes, and I think
everyone had fun.
