IRREGULAR VERBS: A REFERENCE LIST


THE SIMPLE PAST
POSITIVE SENTENCES: The simple past is used to talk about activities
SUBJECT + MAIN VERB (SIMPLE PAST) + OBJECT, or situations that began and ended in the past
example: (e.g., yesterday, last night, two days ago, in
(a) Jane walked downtown yesterday. 1999).
(b) I slept for eight hours last night.
NEGATIVE SENTENCES: I
SUBJECT + DID + NOT + MAIN VERB + OBJECT, You
example: We
(c) I did not walk to school yesterday. They + did not + main verb (simple form)
(d) Tom did not eat lunch yesterday. He

it
(e) INCORRECT: I did not walked to school yesterday.
Notice that the simple form of the main verb is
(f) INCORRECT: Tom did not ate lunch yesterday. used with did not.
(g) I didn’t walk to school yesterday. Negative contraction:
(h) Tom didn’t eat lunch yesterday. Did + not = didn’t
YES/NO QUESTIONS:
DID + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB (SIMPLE FORM) + OBJECT, example:
(i) Did Mary walk to school?
Answer: yes, she did. / no, she didn’t.
(j) Did you come to class?
Answer: yes, I did. / no, I didn’t.

PAST TIME WORDS: YESTERDAY, LAST, AND AGO


YESTERDAY LAST AGO
Yesterday. Last night. Five minutes ago.
Yesterday morning. Last week. Two hours ago.
Yesterday afternoon. Last month. Three days ago.
Yesterday evening. Last year. A (one) week ago.
Six months ago.
Last spring. A (one) year ago.
Last summer.
Last fall.
Last winter.

Last Monday.
Last Tuesday.
Last Wednesday.
Etc.
EXERCISE. The simple past.

Example :

 I (walk) walked to school yesterday.


 Jeni (go, not) didn’t go to a movie last night.
 A: Did you walk downtown yesterday?
B: Yes, I did. (I walked downtown yesterday.)
 A: Did it rain last week?
B: No, it didn’t. (it didn’t rain last week.)
