HBO series, Zahn recalls being even more fit “when I studied ballet at conservatory
in my 20s; it was intense. I was in really good shape.” The actor’s regimen shifted

By 1995 he was competing again and had hopes
of making his country’s Olympic team. He didn’t
make the cut, but in 1998 he got a track scholar-
ship from Abilene Christian University in Texas.
“People were drawn to him,” says his Abilene
coach Jon Murray. “He just loves life. You feel
like you can be a better person just talking to him.”
After graduating and marrying his wife, Triphine,
whom he met while he was in the hospital (the cou-
ple have two daughters, Emma, 20, and Grace, 15),
Tuhabonye moved to Austin to work in a running
shop. His good humor and good advice earned
him a reputation, and soon Austin runners were
asking him for tips. By 2002 he’d formed his run-
ning group Gilbert’s Gazelles, which now numbers SAVING LIVES
400 runners, and was attracting devoted followers WITH WATER

laughter, and fueled by his mantra: Run with joy.

2-day-old son, Tag. An

diagnosis: severe hemophilia type A, a
potentially deadly disorder weakening
the body’s ability to form blood clots.
“It was such a whirlwind of emotions
and unexpected events,” says Monica.
