Technology has definitely played a huge role in developing not only the society and
our surroundings but also the way of living. Our lives have been drastically changed
over the course of time thanks to technology. It certainly helped make our lives easier
and helped us be more efficient.

Martin Heidegger’s The Question Concerning Technology and Jason Hickel’s De-
developmental framework both have similarities and differences when it comes to
the effect of technology to us and our development. According to Martin Heidegger,
the true essence of technology cannot be felt by merely knowing its definitions.
Martin Heidegger stated that no matter where we go, we are unfree and chained to
technology. This means that we almost always depend on technology. Jason Hickel’s
De-developmental framework states that well-developed countries should slow down
so poorer nations can catch up instead of the other way around. In a sense, their
similarities are the use of technology when it comes to development. Well-developed
nations have a wider access to many kinds of technology. Poorer nations will be able
to catch up if other nations would limit their dependance on technology. It means
that they should stop being chained to technology. The differences between the two
is that Jason Hickel’s De-developmental framework focuses more on the aspect of
the development of happiness in people. While Martin Heidegger’s leans more on the
overall growth of the economy.

Based on Aristotle’s idea, the belief of Jason Hickel blends in more as they both
pursue to improve the happiness of each person. This does not mean that Martin
Heidegger is wrong. Using technology and understanding its true essence, in its own
way, also helps us achieve happiness and practice good ethics.

In the end, technology still has a great impact in our lives. These beliefs and ideas are
there to guide us in how we view technology and choose how it affects us and how
we live. As long as we are able to utilize technology for a good cause, we should be
able to progress as a nation and improve our quality of life better than before.
