There are a lot of discussions in our daily life. And sometimes we need to be a listener when others are
speaking. If I were the listener, I will always attentively listen to what others are saying regardless of their
cultural backgrounds. Because in my opinion, no matter the person's cultural background is good or bad, he has
the right to speak out and he should be respected as he deserves. Also, after listening, I always ask appropriate
questions to get additional details to make sure I understood the message. We can only get part of the
information by listening, if we want to know more, we need to ask questions, that’s important.
When we are studying, listening actively is a very vital skill that we need to command, which means we
need to improve it. According to the Active Listening Self-Assessment, we can strengthen it by following ways.
First, we need to focus on the speaker. It means that we shouldn’t pay attention to other things. Usually, we will
put our attention in the things that happened surround us, such as people around you are talking or there is some
noise. Getting rid of distractions can be difficult, but it will be helpful for you to be an actively listener. Second,
focus on what the speaker says, and don’t thinking when he or she is talking. There is no need to respond, maybe
you can write down what you want to say, but when you are listening, just listening.
Active listening is important to foster in diversity. Because in the process of listening, you realize that you
need to accommodate the other person's point of view, so if you are willing to actively listen to the other person,
in the sense that you are actively accommodating the other person, you realize the importance of inclusiveness.
What’s more, you need to pay full attention to the other person and listen in a learning manner, not ragainst
them, whether you agree with them or disagree with them. This means that as you listen, you are also tolerant
and absorbing the viewpoints of different people. So active listening is important to foster inclusiveness.
