THE PLACE

The small midwestern town of Hawkins located in Roane County within


the state of ​Indiana​, with an estimated population of 30,000.

THE TIME

October 1984

CAST OF CHARACTERS

AXEL​--He is a member of KALI’s gang.

DOTTIE​--The last one to meet KALI. Member of KALI’s gang.

FUNSHINE​--Member of KALI’s gang.

MICK​--Member of KALI’s gang.

Kali / 008​--EIGHT, a young woman with illusion manipulation


abilities, who, along with ELEVEN, was experimented on at the Hawkins
Laboratory, but later managed to escape.

DUSTIN HENDERSON​--A ​smart, goofy, and confident ​student at Hawkins


Middle School. Member of THE PARTY.

LUCAS SINCLAIR​--​A loyal but headstrong student at Hawkins Middle


School. Member of THE PARTY.

MIKE WHEELER​--A compassionate, committed, creative student at Hawkins


Middle School. Dungeon Master and member of THE PARTY.

JOYCE BYERS​--The loving, loyal, determined, and wild-eyed mother of


WILL and JONATHAN BYERS. Clerk at Melvaid’s General Store.

WILL BYERS​-- A soft-spoken, amicable, exceedingly intelligent , and


honest student at Hawkins Middle School. Member of THE PARTY.
KEITH​--A recurring character and employee at the The Palace Arcade.

ELEVEN​--​A timid, socially withdrawn girl who is extremely cautious of


other people. However, she became fiercely protective and showed
unyielding loyalty towards those who cared for her, especially to
Mike whom she fell in love with, to the point of sacrificing herself
to destroy the ​Monster​ when it threatened to harm her friends.

HOPPER​-- The headstrong, sarcastic chief of Hawkins with intentions


of keeping the residents safe from the threats of the laboratory on
top of protecting his hidden daughter, ELEVEN.

William “Billy” Hargrove​--The ​sinister, violent, but portrayed to be


charming, irresistible, new King of Hawkins High. The unpredictable
step-brother of MAX.

Maxine "Max" Mayfield​--A tomboyish, skeptical, headstrong new student


at Hawkins Middle School. Eagerly wants to become a member of THE
PARTY.

SCOTT CLARKE​--A supportive, intelligent, friendly, resourceful, and


caring teacher who is well respected by THE PARTY.

NANCY WHEELER​--A hyper-intelligent and studious student at Hawkins


High School. she becomes more rebellious, lying and participating in
activities she most likely wouldn't have done otherwise. Though her
actions became influenced by her new “friends”, she still remained
kind, sympathetic, and studious. Older sister to MIKE.

STEVE HARRINGTON​-- The sweet, yet protective and brave boyfriend of


NANCY whos’ popular reputation at Hawkins High deems him the king of
the school.

JONATHAN BYERS​--A smart, introverted, asocial, kind, independent, and


brave student at Hawkins Highschool, and brother to WILL.
DR. OWEN​--Owens shares his predecessor's stubbornness and commitment
to science. Head scientist at Hawkins Lab (replacement of BRENNER)

BOB NEWBY​--The clever boyfriend of JOYCE, who enjoys solving riddles


and puzzles.

MURRAY​-- A private investigator who was hired by the Hollands to look


into their daughters disappearance. Sarcastic, blunt, and a bit on
edge, Murray assists JONATHAN and NANCY on exposing Hawkins Lab

TERRY IVES​-- ELEVENS mother whose daughter was taken from her by
DOCTOR BRENNER.

BECKY IVES​-- TERRY’S sister who watches over ELEVEN during her visit.

OFFICER POWELL​-- A sarcastic cop who works with HOPPER.

OFFICER CALLAHAN​-- A sarcastic cop who works with HOPPER.

SYNOPSIS

It's 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still

reeling from the horrors of the Demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins

Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger,

sinister entity still threatens those who survived, all including him

as well.

(The show begins with a van revving its engine, and a group of rebels

DOTTIE​ ad lib lines such as “Go” and “Let's get out of here.”)

Next right. There’s a tunnel. Take it.

(As suspension builds, she slowly raises her hands into a fist, eyes
closing)

(The POLICE swerve out of control, ad lib yelling and confusion)

revealing an 008 tattoo on her wrist)

SCENE 2
(A few days before Halloween, we find our heroic party frantically
searching for money to race over to the arcade. All seem to be doing
better since last year’s scare, and all are ready to have fun without
the fears of the unknown darkness.)

DUSTIN
(DUSTIN fiddles with his walkie talkie for a moment before speaking
into it.)
Lucas! Lucas, you copy? I got four quarters. What’s your haul?
LUCAS
Take your puny haul and multiply it by five.

DUSTIN
(In shock,Dustin sighs, and speaks in a rather dull tone once
realizing he doesn’t have as much as he once thought he did.)
Mike, do you copy? Mike, do you copy?

MIKE
Yeah, I copy.

DUSTIN
Lucas and I have six bucks total. What’s your haul?

MIKE
Shit - I don’t know yet.

DUSTIN
What do you mean you don’t -
(Before he could complete his sentence, MIKE ends the signal, and
races offstage in search of money)

(The set changes to replicate an arcade, MIKE, DUSTIN, and LUCAS,


approach on bikes, smiles on their faces. WILL approaches JOYCE,
who’s motherly paranoia prevents him from traveling without her
watchful eye.)

JOYCE
If anything happens, if you need to come home, just ask them to use
their phones and call home. Okay? Don’t--

WILL
(WILL completes her sentence, hearing her speech multiple times
beforehand.)
Don’t walk or bike home. I know, I know.
(He then exits the car, smiling at JOYCE and meeting up once more
with his friends, who greet him before ALL walk into the arcade as a
group.)

(BEAT - Center stage, face audience)

MIKE

SCENE 3

(The next day at Hawkins High School, we’re introduced to BILLY and
MAX, new students from California)

BILLY
(He grabs hold of MAX’s wrist, not as harshly as later on, but more
as a way of saying “don’t go”.)
Don’t fuck up your first day. We have a reputation to keep.

MAX
(Under her breath)
Not that there’s a reputation worth keeping.
(BILLY scoffs, letting her go- letting it slide just this once. This
leads into the transition into Hawkins Middle School, where Max runs
off to.)

MR.CLARKE
Ah, this must be our new student.
(MAX begins to walk to a seat, but MR.CLARKE stops her in her
tracks.)
All right. Hold up. You don’t get away that easy. Come on up. Don’t
be shy. Dustin, drum roll. Class, please welcome, all the way from
sunny California, the latest passenger to join us on our curiosity
voyage, Maxine.

MAX
It’s Max. Nobody calls me Maxine.

LUCAS
Mad Max..

PRINCIPAL
William Byers? You mom is here to pick you up.

(SCENE CHANGE- HOPPER enters, examining rotten pumpkins scattered


across, observing them exceedingly getting worse and worse as he
continues to walk)

SCENE 4
(Enter NANCY and JONATHAN, both holding an orange flyer advertising a
Halloween party.)
NANCY
You’re coming to this. I can’t let you sit alone all Halloween.
That’s not acceptable.

JONATHAN
You can relax, I’m not gonna be alone. I’m going trick-or-treating
with Will.

(STEVE runs in, hugging NANCY- leaving JONATHAN to walk off by


himself.)

SCENE 5
(Transition to Hawkins Lab, where JOYCE, WILL, and HOPPER meet up.)
JOYCE
Hey, I’m gonna be there the whole time. So it’s gonna be okay. Okay?
Just tell them what you saw.

Well, my friends were there and then they just weren’t, and I was back
there again. I heard this noise, and so I went outside, and it was worse.
There was this storm. I felt.. frozen.

DR.OWENS
Okay. Well, what we know now from post-traumatic stress...just treat him
normally. Be patient with him. Don’t pressure him to talk. Just let him
lead the way.

JOYCE

SCENE 6
(MIKE sits in his basement, throwing toys into a box. He looks at
each one carefully, examining their worth. He slowly stands, and
moves into the blanket fort that once belonged to ELEVEN.)

MIKE
El, are you there? El? It’s me. It’s Mike. It’s day 352, 7:40 p.m.
I’m still here. If you’re out there, say something. Or give me a
sign. I won’t even say anything. Just… I wanna know if you’re okay.
(He waits a moment, before putting away his walkie talkie)
I’m so stupid.
(As he stands up to walk away, a voice is heard through the device.)

ELEVEN
Mike…

DUSTIN
Mike? Hello? Is that you? What’re you doing on this channel again?

MIKE
I’m busy.

SCENE 7
(Inside the Byers’ household, we see WILL sitting on a bed, and
JONATHAN enters after a few seconds. WILL is coloring a picture, and
JONATHAN oversees.)

JONATHAN
Zombie boy.. Who’s Zombie boy?
(WILL remains silent, and continues to color)
Hey. You can talk to me. You know that, right?
(WILL is still quiet, visibly upset.)

SCENE 7
(We first see ELEVEN from the end of Season 1, trapped from saving her
friends. She slowly turns around to see her new surroundings- a place she
once was with a dark and twisted spin)

ELEVEN
...Mike? Mike? Mike? Mike! Mike!
(She begins to panic, walking faster across the stage in fear)
Mike!
(The voices of soldiers are heard from offstage, ad lib. ELEVEN slowly
walks towards the noise, finding her exit. Pointing in the direction of
where the opening would be, she raises her hand and forces the doorway to
open for herself to fit.)

SCENE 8
(An instrumental musical transition- ELEVEN walks off stage after opening
the doorway to come back the other direction, wearing a sheet over her
head and meeting HOPPER in the kitchen of her new abode.)

HOPPER
Oh, Jesus!

ELEVEN
Ghost.
HOPPER
Yeah, I see that.

ELEVEN
Halloween.

HOPPER
Sure is. But now is breakfast, Okay? Come on, let’s eat.

ELEVEN
They wouldn’t see me. The bad men.
(ELEVEN pauses, referencing the costume she is wearing.)
Trick or treat.

HOPPER
You know the rules. So you know the answer. You go out there, ghost or
not, it’s a risk. We don’t take risks. All right? They’re stupid, and…

ELEVEN
We’re not stupid.

SCENE 8
(Halloween day- WILL stands with JONATHAN, surrounded by the rest of the
party- who are dressed as Ghostbusters outside of the Wheeler’s house.)
JONATHAN
Hey, listen. If I let you go on your own, you promise to stay in the
neighborhood? And be back at Mike’s by 9:00? Deal?
(JONATHAN pauses for a minute, and hands WILL a camera from JOYCE’S new
boyfriend, BOB).
Take this, okay? Don’t let any of your spazzy friends use it. Bob would
get mad, meaning mom would too.
(WILL smiles and nods, and races over to his friends with the camera- who
begin to walk across the stage. JONATHAN looks once more at the Halloween
flyer, taking a deep breath before walking the other way. As MIKE, DUSTIN,
LUCAS, and WILL walk the opposite direction- they are interrupted by MAX,
who jumps out to scare them. LUCAS screams.)

MAX
Holy Shit! You should have seen the look on your faces. And you? Who
screams like that? You sound like a little girl.
(MAX begins to walk, turning around to see the group of boys standing
still.)
Hey, you guys coming or not?
(MIKE, DUSTIN, LUCAS, and WILL smile - catching up with MAX and continue
to walk. As they reach the end of the stage, WILL slows down, facing the
audience once more. He is once again transported into the Upside Down. He
slowly sits down on the stage, fear stricken. MIKE turns around, realizing
where he is.)
MIKE
Will, what’s wrong?

DUSTIN
What’s wrong with him?

MIKE
I’m gonna get you home, okay? I’m gonna get you home. Hold on.

SCENE 9
(Tina’s party, where NANCY, STEVE, BILLY and JONATHAN are. NANCY and STEVE
are in a bathroom, BILLY seems to be the life of it all, and JONATHAN
aimlessly wanders. NANCY is extremely drunk, and rubs a red stain on her
shirt from the spilled punch.)

NANCY

Why do we bother to stay?

STEVE

Why are you running away?

NANCY

Don't you feel like severing?

STEVE

Everything's just come together at last

NANCY

It's broken, I don't want to play

Talked about everything, spoke about so many things

BOTH

What shall we wear tonight? What shall we eat today?

Can we go ice skating? But we just did that yesterday

Should we be firemen? Can we be astronauts?

NANCY

What if they find us?

STEVE

They're not looking anyway


NANCY

It’s bullshit. Bullshit.

STEVE
No, it's not bullshit. Okay?

NANCY
No you. You’re bullshit

STEVE

Fill my glass, let's drink a toast

This is our birthday, so why are we weeping?

I wake up first, and I stare at you sleeping

NANCY
You’re pretending like everything is okay. You know, like we didn’t … like
we didn’t kill Barb. Like, it’s great. Like, we’re in love and we’re
partying. Yeah, let’s party, huh? Party. We’re partying. This is bullshit.

BOTH

What shall we wear tonight? What shall we eat today?

Do you think I should marry him? But we just met him yesterday

SCENE 10
(Back at the Byers’ house, JOYCE and BOB are dancing together, laughing.
JOYCE seems a bit tense, worried about WILL.)

BOB
You playing Frankenstein to my Dracula? Come on, you’re stiff as a board.
Relax. … He’s fine. Okay? Jonathan’s with him. What if we move out of
Hawkins.. Together? I know! Woah, Nellie, right? I just … I’ve been
thinking about what you said. About how we’ve got all these memories here,
and you wish you had enough money to move.

JOYCE
Oh, it’s just so hard to explain. It’s just this… this is not a normal
family.

BOB
It could be.

SCENE 11
(The Wheeler’s house. MIKE and WILL are sitting in the basement,
surrounded by candy wrappers.)

We’ve got tonight- Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

WILL

It’s like… like I’m stuck. You know on a View-Master when it gets,
like..stuck between slides? Like one side’s our world, and the other … The
other slide is the Upside Down. And .. And there was this noise coming
from everywhere. And then I saw something. It was like this huge shadow in
the sky. Only, it was alive. And it was coming for me.

MIKE

I know it’s late, I know you’re weary

I know your plans don’t include me

Still here we are, both of us lonely

SCENE 12
(Transition scene - DUSTIN finds Dart in the trash can)

SCENE 13
(MIKE, DUSTIN, LUCAS, WILL, and MAX gather around DUSTIN’S costume prop
containing Dart the next day at school.)
DUSTIN
His name is d’Artagnan. Cute,right? Dart for short. He was in my trash,
foraging for food. Wanna hold him. He doesn’t bite!

MAX
I don’t want-
(DUSTIN passes Dart around the circle of kids, ad lib/ stage talk of
disgust.)
MIKE
What is he?

DUSTIN
My question exactly.

​MIKE
Do you guys see that? Looks like something is moving inside of it.
(WILL looks at it once more, realizing the strange species looks oddly
familiar. As Dart grows, he gasps quietly. The group slowly put Dart away,
and leave the room. WILL stays behind, leaving MIKE to look back at him.)
What? What?

WILL
It’s about d’Artagnan.

SCENE 14
(Transition scene- JOYCE sets up the video camera to the TV to see what
WILL had recorded on Halloween night. She pauses it, seeing a strange
outline. An outline she swore she had seen before. She quickly pulls
WILL’S drawing off a table, placing it next to the TV and seeing the
similarity before taking parchment paper and tracing it out herself.)

SCENE 15
(HOPPER’S cabin. ELEVEN is visibly upset as she and HOPPER sit at a table,
fidgeting with food.)
HOPPER
You visited him again last night?
ELEVEN
He said he needs me.

HOPPER
I know that you miss him, alright? But it’s too dangerous. You’re the last
thing he needs right now. You’re gonna see him. Soon. And not just in that
head of yours. You’re gonna see him in real life.

ELEVEN
You say “soon” on day 21. You say “soon” on day 205. You now say “soon” on
day 326? When is “soon”?

HOPPER
“Soon” is when it’s not dangerous anymore.

ELEVEN
On day 500? On day 600? Day 700? On day 800? I need to see him. Tell me!
Friends don’t lie!
(ELEVEN stands up and slams her door, leaving HOPPER alone. He sighs, but
leaves to go to work. ELEVEN hears him go, and slowly opens her door,
stepping outside.)
Not stupid.

SCENE 15
(Back at Hawkins Middle School. MIKE catches up with the rest of the
party, getting them to stop in their tracks.)
MIKE
We need to talk. It’s about Dart.
(They all hesitate, then follow MIKE back to the AV Club room. MIKE stops
once more, looking at MAX.)
Party members only.
(MIKE rushes them all inside, closing the door and leaving MAX to bang on
it. As they talk, she begins to pick the lock.)
Will saw something that looked like Dart last year. But then he heard it
yesterday. The exact same sound. What if when Will was stuck in the Upside
Down, he somehow acquired True Sight? Maybe these episodes that Will keeps
having aren’t really flashbacks at all. Maybe they’re real. Maybe Will can
somehow see into the Upside Down.
(MAX finally gets the lock open just as Dart escapes the prop. MIKE tries
to hit it, but DUSTIN stops him. They all run into the hallway, knocking
over MAX)
LUCAS
Where’d he go?

MAX
What was that?!

MIKE
Dart! You let him escape!

DUSTIN
Why did you attack him?
(MIKE runs with the rest of the group, looking for Dart.)
Don’t hurt him. Don’t you hurt him!
(While the group looks, ELEVEN enters the school. As they all walk by,
ELEVEN sees glimpses of them. She eventually sees MIKE, who is in the gym
with MAX.)

MIKE
You should just go home.

MAX
Why do you hate me so much?
MIKE
I don’t hate you. How can I hate you? I don’t know you.

MAX
But you don’t want me in your party.

MIKE
Correct.

MAX
Why not?

MIKE
Because you’re annoying. Also, we don’t need another party member. I’m our
paladin, Will’s our cleric, Dustin’s our bard, Lucas is our ranger, and
El’s our mage.

MAX
El? Who’s El?

MIKE
Someone. No one. She was in our party a long time ago. She moved away,
okay?

MAX
Well, I could be your zoomer.
(MAX takes her skateboard, and goes in circles around MIKE just as ELEVEN
walks by and sees.)

(The Police Station. Hopper draws X’s on a map where the other police had
claimed to find other rotten pumpkins.)

POWELL
And we found some more by Gilbert’s farm.

CALLAHAN
Some real nasty stuff. It was sticky.

HOPPER
All right. Where else?

POWELL
That was it, chief.

HOPPER
That was it, or you get tired of looking?
(HOPPER looks back at the map, noticing a pattern.)

POWELL
Hey, Chief! Where you going?
(HOPPER crosses the stage, a transition occurring to Hawkins Lab. He
places his map in front of DR.OWENS.)

HOPPER
And it all leads back to here. Whatever is happening is spreading from
this place, from this lab.

DR.OWENS
I’m telling you, there’s nothing to worry about.

HOPPER
I keep things nice and quiet around here. And you keep you ​shit​ out of my
town.

SCENE 17
(Back at Hawkins Middle School. WILL stands in a bathroom, looking down in
fear at Dart.)
WILL
Guys… I found him. In the bathroom by Mr. Salerno’s.
(Before he can react, the world around him turns into the Upside Down once
more. He panics, and runs out of the bathroom and towards the door
outside. However, in the sky above is the Mind Flayer. Paralyzed with
fear, he calls out.)
Go away. Go away! GO AWAY~
(However, the Mind Flayer takes control.)

(HOPPER’S cabin. ELEVEN is still mildly upset about what she saw with MIKE
and MAX. HOPPER, however, is more upset about the betrayal of orders.)

HOPPER
“Friends don’t lie.” Isn’t that your bullshit saying? Hey, hey, hey! Don’t
walk away from me. Where’d you go on your little field trip, huh? Did you
go see Mike?
ELEVEN

He didn’t see me.


HOPPER
Did anyone see you? Come on, I need you to think.

ELEVEN
Nobody saw me! You promised… I go! And I never leave! Nothing ever
happens! You lie!

HOPPER
I don’t lie! I protect and I feed and I teach!And all I ask of you is that
you follow three simple rules. And you can’t even do that! You’re
grounded. You know what that means? It means no Eggos… And no TV for a
week.

(ELEVEN uses her powers to keep the TV in place.)

All right, knock it off. Let go. Okay. Two weeks. Let go! A month!

ELEVEN

No!

HOPPER
Well, congratulations. You just graduated from no TV for a month to no TV
at all!

ELEVEN
You are like Papa! I hate you.

HOPPER
Yeah, well I’m not so crazy about you either. You know why? ‘Cause you’re
a brat.

(ELEVEN storms off into her room and screams, lighting cue for shattering
and breaking of objects.)

SCENE 19
(Outside The Wheeler’s house. NANCY walks to JONATHAN, ready to discover
the truth about what happened to Barb.)

NANCY
Did you see your mom?

JONATHAN
No, she was sleeping. But I left a note.

NANCY
You don’t have to do this, you know.

JONATHAN
Stop saying that.

(Transition to Hawkins Lab. JONATHAN and NANCY approach the doors,


instantly greeted by DR.OWENS, who looks at them with a smile. JONATHAN
and NANCY look at each other for a moment before following DR.OWENS
inside- who leads them down a narrow hallway. )

DR.OWENS

Didn’t expect for you to be here so soon. We would have had better
accommodations, but that’s not really our thing.

(Outside Hawkins Middle School- MIKE, MAX, and LUCAS are still searching
for Dart- who DUSTIN still has. LUCAS is searching through garbage, while
the others watch in disgust.)

DUSTIN
What the hell is going on?

MIKE
What do you think? We’re looking for Dart.

LUCAS
Well, well, well. Look who finally decided to show up. After I drew the
short straw. Real convenient. Are you just gonna stand there? Or you gonna
help?

DUSTIN
Where’s Will?

MIKE
He’ll be here.

SCENE 21
(Byer’s Household. WILL groggily walks up to JOYCE, who looks at him with
motherly sympathy. She ruffles his hair and takes his hand before both sit
down.)

JOYCE

Hey. How you feeling, sleepyhead? Any better? Same as last night? Still
weird?

(JOYCE takes WILL’S temperature.)

WILL
Is it a fever?

JOYCE

No. Uh, actually, it’s cold.

WILL

(WILL pauses for a moment, eyes nearly fogging over.)

… He likes it cold.

SCENE 22

(HOPPER’S cabin, ELEVEN is looking through old paperwork with her mother’s
name on it. She places a blindfold over her eyes, and touches the papers
before her, searching for her lost mom.)

(Outside Hawkins Middle school. MIKE tries to call the Byers household,
but no one picks up. LUCAS, DUSTIN, and MAX stand on the steps, waiting
for MIKE’S return and potentially an answer on WILL’S whereabouts.)

MIKE

We need to talk. AV room. Right now. Party members only. This is


non-negotiable.
DUSTIN
Sorry, Max.

(The party leaves to go back into the school except LUCAS, who follows MAX
outside.)

LUCAS

Are you okay?

MAX
You guys act like you want me to be your friend but then you treat me like
garbage! You go and hide in the AV Club, keeping secrets like we’re in
second grade or something. You know, I thought you guys wanted me in your
party.

LUCAS
There.. There are just things. Things we can’t tell you alright? For your
own safety.

MAX

Okay. You know what? Forget it, okay?

(MAX walks to BILLY’S car, getting inside. BILLY’S eyes, however, are
glued on LUCAS- who looks behind him at MAX as he walks back towards the
school.)

BILLY
That kid you were talking to, who is he?

MAX
He’s no one.

BILLY

Hey. This is serious shit, okay? I’m older than you. And something you
learn is that there are certain type of people in this world that you stay
away from, and that kid, Max… that kid is one one of them. You stay away
from him, you hear me? Stay away.

SCENE 24 A

(HOPPER arrives at the Byers’ household, the door already open.)

HOPPER

What the hell’s going on? It’s freezing.

(JOYCE walks to WILL, slowly approaching with HOPPER)

JOYCE
We have a visitor.

HOPPER
So this thing, the shadow thing - you told your mom it likes it like this?
It likes it cold? How do you know that?

WILL
I just know. I don’t have to think. I just know things now. Things I never
did before. It’s like old memories in the back of my head, only .. they’re
not my memories. I mean, I don’t think they’re old memories at all.
They’re … they’re now- memories, happening all at once, now.

HOPPER

These now memories, can you explain?

WILL
It’s like, they’re growing and spreading...killing.

(WILL begins to cry, hugging JOYCE.)

JOYCE
What if you didn’t have to use words?
(JOYCE stands up, picking up a pile of paper and crayons. WILL instantly
begins to color in random lines, tossing them aside once completed.)

They’re all the same.

(JOYCE flips through them, noticing a connecting pattern.)

Wait..Look, they connect.

(HOPPER stands up, taking the papers and begins to connect them with
JOYCE.)

HOPPER
Does this mean anything to you?

JOYCE

Is it some sort of maze or a road? This is all blue and it has some weird
dirt color. Maybe it’s roots.

HOPPER
Vines.

(HOPPER exits, leaving JOYCE and WILL alone. As he leaves, MIKE comes
onstage, knocking on the door.)

JOYCE

Hey, Mike. You know what? Now is not a really good time. You know, he’s..
He’s just not feeling real well. He’s laying down, so I’ll tell him you
stopped by, okay?

MIKE
It’s about the shadow monster, isn’t it?

(JOYCE lets MIKE enter, leading him to WILL’S room before approaching the
phone. We hear HOPPER’S voicemail, but no answer. After a moment, she
takes a one of the drawings on the floor and aligns it on the the wall.
She passes MIKE and WILL, who are sitting together on WILL’S bed)

MIKE
What’s going on..?

(WILL pauses, then looks at him.)

WILL

At first I just felt it in the back of my head. I didn’t even really know
it was there. It’s like when you have a dream and you can’t remember it
unless you think really hard. It was like that. But now it’s like..now I
remember all the time.

MIKE

Just think about it, Will. You’re like a spy now. A superspy. Spying on
the shadow monster. If you know what he’s seeing and feeling… maybe that’s
how we can stop him. Maybe all of this is happening for a reason.

WILL
What if he figures out we’re spying on him? What if he spies back?

MIKE

He won’t. We won’t let him.

(HOPPER approaches the pumpkin patch, digging a hole in the center of it


all. However, he falls in, trapping himself in the upside down. Fear
begins to raise in him, and he starts to wander into the epicenter.
However, vines begin to wrap around him- leaving him in darkness.)

(The darkness fades away, leaving us once again in the Byers’ house. WILL
becomes overwhelmed with fear, and approaches JOYCE, who is sitting in the
middle of her floor with drawings surrounding her.)

WILL
Mom..Mom? Mom? I saw him.

JOYCE
You saw who, baby?

WILL
Hopper. I think he’s in trouble. I think he’s going to die.

SCENE 24 B

(The Henderson’s house - DUSTIN wraps up a fake phone call, knowing his
mom is in the next room. AD lib “yeah”, “of course”, “thank you”, etc. He
sets the phone down after a moment, hearing his mom leave.)

DUSTIN

(He places protective gear on, and slowly approaches his door, dropping
bait as he walks. Once the door is open, he runs to the other side of the
stage, hiding.)

Shit, shit, ​shit!

(The bait itself leads entirely off stage, leaving DUSTIN to exit his
hiding spot and trap Dart. This can be shown with the wings of the stage.
Dart screams, yet DUSTIN prevails.)

I’m sorry.. You ate my cat.

(DUSTIN picks up his walkie talkie)

Guys, this is Dustin again. Does anyone copy? This is a code red. I
repeat, a code red!
(SCENE CHANGE- as DUSTIN walks off stage, repeating stage talk of “does
anyone copy?”,MAX and LUCAS walk on- the set itself changing to the
arcade. )

KEITH
You better get me that date now, Sinclair. And keep things PG in here

MAX

What is this shit, stalker.

LUCAS

Listen. I’m gonna tell you the truth about everything that happened last
year.

Well, I mean, I had a few issues. I felt it was a little derivative in
parts. I just wish it had a little more originality. That’s all.

SCENE 25

(ELEVEN approaches the Ives’ household, knocking on the door. No one


answers, leaving her to open it with her mind. BECKY stands in shock,
looking at her in fear.)

ELEVEN

I want to see Mama.

(BECKY slowly approaches ELEVEN, taking her where TERRY is sitting.)

TERRY

Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. Breathe. Sunflower.

ELEVEN
Mama? Mama, can you hear me?

TERRY

Four-fifty. Breathe. Sunflower.

ELEVEN

What’s wrong with Mama?

BECKY

A policeman and a woman came looking for you last year. Did they find you?

I don’t think so, no. But she’s not in any pain. Sometimes she says
different words. But usually those. She always believed that you were out
there. She always believed that you’d come home one day.

(ELEVEN stands up to look around, but as she does- a light starts


flickering. It leads her back to TERRY, who is still repeating the same
words.)

ELEVEN
It’s Mama. She knows I’m here. She wants to talk.
(ELEVEN grabs a cloth from a table, and hands it to ELEVEN, who wears it
as a blindfold. She sits in silence- seconds pass, and she exceedingly
gets more and more upset. She rips off her blindfold, crying.)

SCENE 25

(MURRAY’S house. JONATHAN and NANCY approach, ready to expose the truth.)

JONATHAN

Are you positive this is the right place?

NANCY

“3833.” Yeah.

(JONATHAN and NANCY knock on the door, MURRAY opening it.)

MURRAY
Nancy Wheeler. Jonathan Byers. You two are a long way from home. Well.. I
hope you didn’t come all this way to tell me about the bear in the
Harrington kid’s backyard. I’ve heard that one already.

(MURRAY leads them to a detective’s wall with theories.)

Take a look. Go ahead, don’t be shy. I know every last step Barbara took
that day, every last person she talked to. The answer to what happened to
your friend, it’s up here somewhere.

NANCY

Timeline’s wrong. Your timeline is wrong. And the girl with the buzzed
hair, she’s not Russian. She’s from Hawkins Lab. Her name was Eleven.

(NANCY raises her tape, it begins to play.)


DR.OWENS (voice)

...the more people like the Hollands who know the truth, the more likely
that scenario becomes. You see why I have to stop the truth from
spreading, too. Just the same as those weeds there. By whatever means
necessary.

(MURRAY stands up, pacing back and forth.)

MURRAY

There’s nothing simple about anything you’ve told me. I believe you, but
that’s not the problem. You don’t need me to believe you. You need them to
believe you.

JONATHAN
Them?

MURRAY

Them. With a capital “T”. Those people… They’re not wired like me and you,
okay? They don’t spend their lives trying to get a look at what’s behind
the curtain.

(He pauses.)

It’s just too strong.

NANCY

We water it down.

SCENE 26

(Back at the Byers’ house. WILL points at one of the drawings- leaving
MIKE and JOYCE to frantically find it’s matching spot. Once finding it,
JOYCE marks an X on the spot. Just as this happens, BOB knocks on the
door.)

BOB
Surprise. I would’ve called, but you said not clog up the line.

JOYCE
You know, I… We’re fine, we don’t need anything. Listen, it’s just not a
good time. But, um, you know what? I’ll call you, okay?

BOB
Well, have him call me. They don’t call me Bob the Brain for nothing.

(BOB turns to leave- and just as he does, JOYCE calls to him.)

JOYCE
Bob!

(JOYCE leads him inside the house where all the drawings are. BOB, JOYCE,
MIKE, and WILL stand with him, following his gaze.)

BOB
You drew all these yourself? Why, exactly?

JOYCE
I.. I told you the rules. No questions, okay? We.. we just need you to
help us figure out what...where.. Where this is.

MIKE
That’s the objective. Find the X.

BOB

(BOB looks around, having a realization.)

I know that shape. It’s Lovers’ Lake.

(He starts to walk around, connecting the dots.)


Okay, I get it. That’s Lake Jordan. And if that’s lake Jordan, then you
can probably find...Yeah, that’s, uh, Sattler’s quarry. And if you just
follow it naturally… it moves to… the Eno River. And there it is. That’s
the Eno, do you see it? Okay, so the lines aren’t roads. But they act like
roads. And they act like roads ‘cause when you follow ‘em, you’ll see…
they don’t go over water. And that’s the giveaway. That’s the giveaway.
Ha!Don’t you get it? It’s not a puzzle,it’s a map. It’s a map of Hawkins.
Right Will? I would say the X is… maybe a half a mile southeast of
Danford?

JOYCE
Thank you. Thank you.

(JOYCE runs outside, MIKE and WILL confused- but following.)

BOB
What? Are we.. we really going?

(SCENE TRANSITION- ALL walk across the stage, lighting change to


distinguish a time change and distance. They stand in a square formation,
simulating a car.)

MIKE
There’s nothing. There’s nothing here.

WILL
Turn right. I saw him.

JOYCE
Where?

WILL
Not here. In my now-memories. Turn right!

BOB
What’s Jim doing here? Joyce?
JOYCE
Boys, I need you to stay here.

WILL
No. Mom, mom, mom, it’s not safe!

(JOYCE and BOB go into the hole Hopper has dug, looking for him.)

(JOYCE and BOB run to where HOPPER is laying, nearly lifeless. JOYCE takes
hold of a knife, and begins to cut away at the vines. However, as they
begin to take him, WILL and MIKE step out of the car and look at the hole.
WILL and MIKE turn around to see headlights- soldiers pile out of a van
with fire guns, burning the vines. JOYCE, HOPPER, and BOB are escorted
out. WILL begins to collapse, seizing from the pain.)

SCENE 27

(DUSTIN bikes to MIKE’S house in search of him. As he approaches, so does


STEVE, holding a bouquet of roses.)

STEVE

(Under his breath.)

Listen..I’ve been thinking… I love you. I’m sorry. I’m sorry? What the
hell am I sorry for?

DUSTIN

Nancy isn’t home.

STEVE
Where is she?

DUSTIN
Doesn’t matter. We have bigger problems than your love life. Do you still
have that bat? The one with the nails?
(Scene transition- STEVE and DUSTIN walk across stage, but when they come
back the other direction- they are holding buckets of meat to bait Dart.)

STEVE

You kept something you knew was probably dangerous in order to impress a

DUSTIN

All right, that’s grossly oversimplifying things.

STEVE
I mean, why would a girl like some nasty slug anyway?

DUSTIN
An interdimensional slug? Because it’s awesome. Well, even if she thought
it was cool, which she didn’t, I...I just.. I don’t know. I just feel like

(DUSTIN runs over to LUCAS, clearly upset.)

DUSTIN

LUCAS

You wanted to tell her, too.

DUSTIN

We agreed not to tell her and to look for Dart.

STEVE
Hey! Dickheads! How come the only one helping out this random girl? We
lose light in 40 minutes. Let’s go. Let’s go, I said!

DUSTIN

LUCAS

Okay! Stupid.
(A lighting change is used to signify a time change. LUCAS approaches MAX,
who is sitting and staring at the sky.)

(Cue flashing lights and sounds, STEVE steps out, hitting the bat at the
Demogorgons. Ad lib cheering, “run!”, etc. After a few moments, STEVE runs
back to the group. The Demogorgons scatter.)

DUSTIN

Steve scared ‘em off?

STEVE

No. No way. They’re going somewhere.

(TRANSITION- ELEVEN flips through files, finally finding one of her


sister. She places her fingertips on her face, before putting it in her
pocket.)

SCENE 28

(Hawkins Lab. WILL is asleep, BOB and MIKE are sitting with him while
JOYCE converses with DR.OWENS.)

JOYCE
That thing, it..it did something to him.

DR.OWENS
Okay. And these now-memories, as you call them, how long has he been
experiencing them?

JOYCE
I told you, since Thursday. Since I found him in the field. I’ve been
bringing him in, and what have you done? Nothing. Nothing! He’s been
telling you over and over that something’s wrong, and you said it was all
in his head. You said, “Be patient.” Those were your words. No, I want him
transferred to a real hospital. What have you been treating him for,
exactly? Can anyone tell me what’s wrong with him? Can a single person
tell me what is wrong with my boy? What is wrong with my boy?

(JOYCE turns to BOB. DR.OWEN exists.)

BOB
Man, I always thought stuff like this happened in movies and comic books.
Certainly not in Hawkins, and certainly not to someone like you. Bob
Newby, superhero. It’s not like you didn’t warn me. “This is not a normal
family”. You weren’t kidding.

WILL

...Mom?

JOYCE
Sweetie, how you feeling? You okay?

BOB

Hey.

WILL
Who is that?

JOYCE

What?

BOB
It’s me, big guy. It’s Bob.

WILL
Are you a...doctor?

(DR.OWENS enters again as WILL speaks.)


DR. OWENS
Do you know your name?

WILL

DR.OWENS

Do you know.. Do you know who I am?

WILL
A doctor.

DR.OWENS
How about, uh...How about this guy?

WILL
That’s my friend. Mike.

HOPPER
What about me, kid? You remember me?

(WILL shakes his head.)

DR.OWENS
Do you remember anything about last night? About what happened?

WILL

I remember they hurt me.

DR.OWENS

You mean the doctors?

WILL

No. The soldiers. They shouldn’t have done that. It upset him.
(DR.OWENS pulls out pictures of WILL’S drawings, WILL points at one as he
fidgets through them.)

That. I don’t know, he doesn’t want me to see there. I think it’s


important.

(DR.OWENS nods at his men, who run off stage. Light cue to signify
something bad occuring.)

WILL
I’m sorry.

JOYCE
What? What do you mean, sweetie?

WILL
He made me do it. I told you. They upset him. They shouldn’t have done
that. They shouldn’t have upset him.

MIKE

The spy. The spy!

JOYCE
What’s going on?

MIKE

We need to make Will sleep.

JOYCE

What?

MIKE

HE’s a spy. If he knows where we are, so does the shadow monster.


WILL
He’s lying.

MIKE
He killed those soldiers. He’ll kill us, too!

WILL

BOB

Those are gunshots!

WILL

JOYCE

(CHICAGO- ELEVEN into an old abandoned building, seeing DOTTIE, AXEL,


FUNSHINE, MICK, and KALI.)

AXEL
Well, well well. What do we have here?

MICK

What is she wearing? What are those, overalls?

DOTTIE
There aren’t any cows to milk here, kid. Go on back to the farm now.

ELEVEN
I’m looking for my sister.

(AXEL raises a knife to her, and invisible spiders race up his arm.)

AXEL

Jesus. Jesus Christ!

KALI

You’re a terrible dancer, Axel. So we’re threatening little girls now, are
we?

ELEVEN
I saw you. In the rainbow room.

KALI
What’s your name?
ELEVEN
Jane.

(Both KALI and ELEVEN examine each others wrists)

Sister.

KALI
Sister. So where have you been staying?

ELEVEN

With a policeman.

KALI
Let me guess. Your policeman, he also stops you from using your gifts?
What you can do is incredible. It makes you very special, Jane.

ELEVEN
Wait. Do you have a gift?

KALI

Different. I can make people see, or not see, whatever I choose.

ELEVEN
Is that why you made the man with the crazy hair dance?

KALI

Axel isn't so fond of spiders, so…

ELEVEN
You made him see spiders?

KALI
But it doesn’t have to be scary.

(A butterfly appears in her hand.)


This butterfly, it isn’t real. I’ve just convinced your mind it is. Think
of it as a kind of magic.

ELEVEN
Are you real?

KALI
Yes, I’m real.

(ELEVEN pokes at her, and both start to giggle. ELEVEN exists, and KALI
returns to her friends. She pulls out a picture of herself that Eleven
had.)

KALI
She found me. Only with this. It means she can find people without moving.
With nothing but an image. I want to do one. She’s in pain, she needs
this.

(ELEVEN re enters.)

AXEL
In this life, kid, you roll over or fight back.

MICK

We’re all fighters here.

ELEVEN

Fight who?

(KALI pulls out a bunch of ID badges of workers from Hawkins Lab.)

KALI
Everyone you see here was in some way responsible for what happened to us.

ELEVEN

You hurt the bad men? You kill them?


KALI
They’re criminals. We simply make them pay for their crimes.

ELEVEN

I’m a fighter. I’ve killed.

KALI
These men you killed, did they deserve it?

ELEVEN

They hurt me.

KALI
And they still want to hurt you. To hurt us. We’re just making the first
move.

(DOTTIE smiles and grabs ELEVEN’S hand, changing her look to match the
rest of them. After the makeover, they exit - a set change occurring as
they leave. When they re-enter, they are at the house of RAY, one of the
bad men. ELEVEN and KALI approach him, putting him on the ground. )

ELEVEN
You hurt Mama.

KALI

You had a choice, Ray. And you chose to follow a man you knew was evil.Do
it, Jane. Do it.

(ELEVEN begins to suffocate him, yet her eyes fall on a picture frame of
RAY and his children. She lets go as police sirens begin to wail, causing
the entire group to leave.)

If you wanted to show mercy, that is your choice. But don’t you ever take
away mine. Ever. Do you understand? Do you understand? Come on, hurry! We
have to go!
ELEVEN

I’m sorry. I’m sorry, but I have to go back. My friends..my friends are in
danger.

KALI
This isn’t time for a talk. We got to go right now! Your mother sent you
here for a reason, remember? We belong together. There’s nothing for you
back there. They cannot save you, Jane.

ELEVEN

No. But I can save them.

KALI

Jane. Jane! Jane!

(ELEVEN exists, leaving KALI and her friends with the police faster
approaching.)

SCENE 30

(Back at Hawkins Lab, The alarm is ringing and guards are racing out to
try and kill the demogorgons. WILL is knocked unconscious, gunfire is
heard and the group runs for safety.)

DR.OWENS

Look, this is us, and this is the nearest exit.

(DR.OWENS marks up a map, circling locations.)

But even if we somehow make it out of there, there’s no way out.

HOPPER

What do you mean?


DR.OWENS
The locks are fail secure.

JOYCE

Fail secure?

DR.OWENS

If there’s a power outage, the building goes on lockdown.

BOB
Can it be unlocked remotely?

DR.OWENS

With a computer, sure, but somebody’s gotta reset the breakers.

HOPPER

Where are the breakers?

DR.OWENS
Breakers are in the basement, three floors down.

BOB
Hey, where are you going?

HOPPER

To reset the breakers.

BOB
Okay, then what?

HOPPER
Then we get out of here.

BOB
No, then the power comes back on. If you wanna unlock the doors, you have
to reboot the computer system, and then override the security codes with a
manual input.

HOPPER
FIne, how do I do that?

BOB

You can’t. Not unless you know BASIC.

HOPPER

I don’t know what that means.

MIKE
It’s a computer programming language.

HOPPER

Teach it to me.

BOB

Shall I teach you French while I’m at it, Jim? How about a little German?
How about you, Doc? You speak BASIC?

DR.OWENS
No.

BOB

JOYCE

Okay, well...I’ll be in touch.

(BOB exits, leaving JOYCE, HOPPER, DR.OWENS, and MIKE worried. WILL is
still unconscious. On the opposite side of the stage, JONATHAN and NANCY
approach the gates.)

JONATHAN
Why are the lights off?

NANCY

Maybe it’s closed?

JONATHAN

Security took the night off? I don’t think so.

(JONATHAN fidgets with a switch, getting no response.)

NANCY

It’s not working?

JONATHAN

No! The power’s off.

NANCY

Jonathan?

JONATHAN

What?

NANCY

I think there’s something in the woods.

JONATHAN
Nancy, stay back.

(STEVE, DUSTIN, LUCAS, and MAX approach with flashlights.)

Hello? Who’s there?

NANCY and JONATHAN

DUSTIN

What are you doing here?

STEVE

NANCY

We’re looking for Mike and Will.

DUSTIN
They’re not in there, are they?

JONATHAN

We’re not sure. Why?

(A monster's screech is heard. Back in the lab, BOB races down the
hallway. He completes his mission, relieved. The lights flicker, the power
coming back on.)

MIKE
He made it.

DR.OWENS
Okay, Bob, can you hear us?

BOB
Loud and clear, Doc. Can you hear me back?

DR.OWENS
We hear you.
BOB

All right, give me a minute.

(BOB cracks the code on the computer, hacking it.)

Open sesame.

DR.OWENS
It’s open.

BOB

Okay. Easy-peasy.

HOPPER
Son of a bitch did it.

BOB

Right, I’ll meet you outside.

DR.OWENS

Nice job. Now get out of there. Go! Go!

(HOPPER picks up WILL, and begins to leave with JOYCE and MIKE. They reach
the door, yet JOYCE stays behind.)

JOYCE

Come on, Bob. Come on.

(BOB enters, out of breath.)

(Before he can answer, BOB is attacked by the Demogorgons. JOYCE screams,


causing HOPPER to come back.)

(The Byers’ house. WILL is laying on the couch, JONATHAN next to him.)

JONATHAN

I’m sorry, bud. Sorry I wasn’t there. I should have been here.

MIKE
We can’t just sit here while those things are loose!
(HOPPER walks to JOYCE’S room, seeing her sitting alone on the bed. He
sits in front of her.)

fund-raiser for equipment. Mr. Clarke learned everything from him. Pretty
awesome, right? We can’t let him die in vain.

DUSTIN

What do you want to do, Mike? The Chief’s right on this. We can’t stop
those Demo-dogs on our own.

MAX

Demo-dogs?

DUSTIN

Demogorgon dogs.Demo-dogs. It’s like a compound. It’s like a play on


words--

MAX

Okay.

MIKE
The shadow monster. It got Will that day on the field. The doctor said it
was like a virus, it infected him.

MAX

And so this virus, it’s connecting him to the tunnels?

MIKE
To the tunnels, monsters, the Upside Down, everything. The Shadow
Monster’s inside everything. And if the vines feel something like pain,
then so does Will.

LUCAS

And so does Dart.

MIKE

Yeah, Like what Mr. Clarke taught us. The hive mind.

STEVE
Hive mind?

MIKE
And this is the thing that controls everything. It’s the brain.

DUSTIN

Like the mind flayer.

MAX
The what?

(DUSTIN pulls out a D&D guide.)

DUSTIN

The mind flayer.

HOPPER
What the hell is that?

DUSTIN
It’s a monster from an unknown dimension. It’s so ancient that it doesn’t
even know its true home. Okay, it enslaves races of other dimensions by
taking over their brains using its highly-developed psionic powers.

HOPPER

Oh, my God, none of this is real. This is a kids’ game.

DUSTIN

No, it’s a manual. And it’s not for kids. And unless you know something
that we don’t, this is the best metaphor--

LUCAS

Analogy.

DUSTIN

Analogy? That’s what you’re worried about? Fine. An analogy for


understanding whatever the hell this is.

NANCY

Okay, so this mind flammer thing --

DUSTIN

NANCY

STEVE

MIKE

We are talking about the destruction of our world as we know it.

STEVE

NANCY

Okay, so if this thing is like a brain that’s controlling everything, then


if we kill it...

MIKE
We kill everything it controls.

DUSTIN

LUCAS

Theoretically.

HOPPER
Great. So how do you kill this thing? Shoot it with Fireballs or
something?

DUSTIN

No. No, no Fire--No Fireballs. Uh, you summon an undead army,uh,


because...because zombies, you know, they don’t have brains. And the mind
flayer, it… it… it likes brains. It’s just a game. It’s a game.

HOPPER

What the hell are we doing here?

JOYCE

We have to kill it. I want to kill it.

HOPPER

We don’t exactly know what it is we’re dealing with.

MIKE

No, but he does. If anyone knows how to destroy this thing, it’s Will.
He’ll know its weakness. He can’t spy for the mind flayer if he doesn’t
know where he is.

(ALL set up a holding cell for WILL to be questioned. WILL is woken up,
and the interrogation begins.)

JOYCE

the stage. WILL continues to talk through morse code. The scene continues
with mouthing words to WILL, while on the other side, the morse code is
translated.)

DUSTIN

Dash, dot, dast, dot.

LUCAS

Yeah, got it.

MAX

(NANCY writes down the letters.)

(The phone rings, causing WILL to turn his head to the opposite side of
the stage. NANCY rips the phone off the wall. WILL’S eyes close, and he
begins to spy.)

HOPPER
It knows. It knows where we are.

JOYCE
Oh, shit.

(JOYCE injects him once more, knocking WILL out. A monster screech is
heard from outside, leaving the group with WILL to go on the opposite side
of the stage.)

HOPPER

Come on. We gotta go.

(HOPPER offers a gun to JONATHAN.)

Do you know how to use this.

JONATHAN

What?

HOPPER

Can you use this?


NANCY

I can.

(ALL gather around, aiming assorted weapons. The monster's screech is


heard once more, before silence. The lights flash to simulate a crash,
causing ALL to panic. The door begins to unlock, unveiling ELEVEN.)
SCENE 32

MIKE
Eleven.

ELEVEN

Mike.

(They embrace.)

(HOPPER and MIKE travel to the other side of the stage.)

Listen. Listen to me! The more people know about her, the more danger
she’s in. And the more danger you and your family are in--

MIKE

So I should be thanking you?

HOPPER

I’m not asking you to thank me! I’m asking you to try to understand.
MIKE

I don’t! I don’t understand! I blame you! Nothing about this is okay!


Nothing about this is okay! You’re a stupid, disgusting, lying piece of
shit. Liar! Liar!

(MIKE begins to punch HOPPER.)

HOPPER

Stop it! Stop it! You’re okay, kid. You’re okay.

(MIKE breaks down in tears, HOPPER holding him. ELEVEN moves to JOYCE.)

JOYCE

Hey. Hey, sweetheart. Hey.

(They embrace, crying. JOYCE hesitates, taking her to a picture.)

You opened this gate before, right?

ELEVEN

Yes.

JOYCE

Do you think if we got you back there, that you could close it?

(ELEVEN nods.)

ELEVEN

I can do it.

MIKE
Even if El can, there’s still another problem. If the brain dies, the body
dies. If we’re really right about this… I mean, if El closes the gate and
kills the mind flayer’s army...
LUCAS

Will’s a part of that army.

MIKE

Closing the gate will kill him.

JOYCE

He likes it cold.

HOPPER

What?

JOYCE

It’s what Will kept saying to me. He likes it cold. We keep giving it what
it wants.

NANCY

If this is a virus, and Will’s the host, then…

JONATHAN

Then we need to make the host uninhabitable.

JOYCE

We need to burn it out of him.

MIKE

We have to do it somewhere he doesn’t know this time.

(HOPPER nods, carrying WILL out to the car with JOYCE and JONATHAN.)

HOPPER

You let me know when that thing is out of him.


STEVE

You should go with him

NANCY

With Jonathan? No, I’m .. I’m not just gonna leave Mike.

STEVE

No one’s leaving anyone. I may be a pretty shitty boyfriend, but… turns


out I’m actually a pretty damn good babysitter.

HOPPER

El..come on, let’s go. It’s time.

(NANCY gets in the car with JONATHAN, JOYCE, and WILL. HOPPER and EL
travel separately.)

HOPPER

I’m sorry. For everything. I could be so.. So…

ELEVEN

Stupid?

HOPPER

Yeah. Stupid. Just really stupid.

ELEVEN

I’ve been stupid, too.

HOPPER

I guess we broke our rule. I don’t hate it, by the way. This whole… look.
It’s kinda cool.

ELEVEN

HOPPER

SCENE 33

(Back at the Byers’ house.)

STEVE

Listen, dude, a coach calls a play in a game, bottom line, you execute it.
All right?

MIKE

Okay, first of all, this isn’t some stupid sports game. And second, we’re
not even in the game. We’re on the bench.

DUSTIN

I mean, these Demo-Dogs, they have a hive mind. When they ran away from
the bus, they were called away.

LUCAS
If we get their attention..

MAX

Maybe we can draw them away from the lab.

MIKE

Clear a path to the gate.

STEVE

Yeah, and then we all die.

MIKE
Maybe if we set the hub on fire…

STEVE
Oh yeah? That’s a no.

DUSTIN

The mind flayer would call away his army.

LUCAS

They’d all come to stop us.

MIKE

We circle back to the exit.

STEVE
I promised I’d keep you shitheads safe, and that’s exactly what I plan on.
We’re staying here. On the bench. And we’re waiting for the starting team
to do their job. Does everybody understand?

MIKE
This isn’t some stupid sports game.

STEVE

I said does everybody understand that? I need a yes.

(Before they can answer, a car engine revs in the driveway. STEVE steps
outside to see.)

BILLY

Am I dreaming, or is that you, Harrington?

STEVE
Yeah, it’s me. Don’t cream your pants.
BILLY
What are you doing here, amigo?

STEVE
I could ask you the same thing. Amigo.

BILLY
Looking for my stepsister. A little birdie told me she was here.

STEVE
Huh, that’s weird. I don’t know her.

BILLY
Small? Redhead? Bit of a bitch?

STEVE

Doesn’t ring a bell. Sorry, buddy.

BILLY
You know, I don’t know, this.. This whole situation, Harrington, I don’t
know. It’s giving me the heebie-jeebies.

STEVE

Oh yeah? Why’s that?

BILLY
My 13-year-old sister goes missing all day. And then I find her with you
in a stranger’s house. And you lie to me about it.

STEVE
Man, were you dropped too much as a child, or what? I don’t know what you
don’t understand about what I just said. She’s not here.

BILLY
Then who is that?
(BILLY points at the kids, who scatter. BILLY pushes STEVE to the ground,
and runs inside. He instantly charges for LUCAS. Ad lib yelling. STEVE
begins to fight, almost instantly losing. MAX takes a needle that was used
to knock out WILL, and stabs BILLY in the neck. The kids help STEVE off
stage, and when they come back- the set has changed to the Epicenter of
the Upside Down. Ad lib a countdown, the kids and STEVE setting the Upside
Down on fire. Blackout.)

SCENE 34

(HOPPER’S cabin. WILL is tied down on a bed, and JOYCE, JONATHAN, and
NANCY are turning on heaters. WILL begins to scream, and JONATHAN begins
to panic. Knowing that it’s not enough, NANCY stabs WILL with a hot rod,
the mind flayer exiting him. At the same time, at Hawkins Lab, ELEVEN and
HOPPER are inside, ready to close the gate. ELEVEN raises her hands, as
the lights begin to flash. She screams as she increases the power, and
HOPPER shoots at demogorgons trying to escape. She closes the gate,
collapsing beside Hopper. This takes place on two sides of the stage,
STEVE and the kids being upstage center. NANCY steps forward to watch the
mind flayer disperse into the sky. A blackout occurs.)

SCENE 35

(Hawkins Middle School, the Snowball dance. DUSTIN and STEVE are sitting
in a car,and the rest of the kids are inside with JONATHAN and NANCY.
HOPPER and JOYCE are smoking in the parking lot.)

STEVE

All right, buddy, here we are. So, remember, once you get in there..

DUSTIN
Pretend like I don’t care.
STEVE

You don’t care.

DUSTIN
I don’t care.

STEVE
There you go. You’re learning, my friend. You’re learning. Come on. You
look great, okay? You look… you look great. Okay? Now you’re gonna go in
there.. Look like a million bucks. And you’re gonna slay ‘em dead.

DUSTIN
Like a lion.

(DUSTIN purrs.)

STEVE
Don’t do that, okay?

DUSTIN

Okay.

STEVE

Good luck.

(DUSTIN walks into the building, leaving STEVE to take a glance at NANCY
before driving away.)

MIKE
Holy shit. What happened to you?

DUSTIN

What do you mean, “What happened”?

MIKE
What?

LUCAS

Dude.

MAX
Your hair.

LUCAS

Is there a bird nesting in there?

DUSTIN
There’s no bird nesting in here, asshole. Okay? I worked hard.

LUCAS

Max.

(He takes a deep breath and turns to her.)

Hey. Um, it’s nice, right? You want to, um.. You want to like.. You know?
Like, just you and me?

MAX

Are you trying to ask me to dance, stalker?

LUCAS

No, of course not. Unless you want to.

MAX

So smooth. Come on.

(MAX drags him to the other side of the stage to dance.)

GIRL
Hey, Zombie Boy. Do you want to dance?
WILL

Um… I don’t… I mean.. I mean, yeah. Sure.

GIRL
Cool.

(They both move to dance by LUCAS and MAX. DUSTIN looks at MAX,
devastated. Yet, his eyes move to a separate group of girls.)

DUSTIN

Wish me luck, Mike. I’m going in.

(DUSTIN walks over to a group of girls.)

Stacy? Stacy. Shall we?

STACY
Um, no thanks.

(The girls walk to the opposite side of the stage, leaving DUSTIN alone,
teary eyed. NANCY notices and approaches him.)

NANCY

Hey.

DUSTIN

Hey.

NANCY

Wanna dance?

DUSTIN

What?
NANCY

Come on. Let’s go.

(NANCY takes DUSTIN across the stage.)

Here. Closer. A little closer. Okay. Now feel the music. The rhythm. Start
to move to it.Yeah. There. That’s good. Yeah. You know, out of all my

Girls this age are dumb. But give them a few years, and they’ll wise up.

DUSTIN

NANCY

(MIKE sits alone, looking off into space. Suddenly, ELEVEN enters.)

We might be okay. How are you holding up?

JOYCE

HOPPER

does get a little easier.
