9 explain the methods which are used to farm large numbers of fish to

provide a source of protein, including the maintenance of water quality,

control of intraspecific and interspecific predation, control of disease,
removal of waste products, quality and frequency of feeding and the use of
selective breeding.
Providing source of protein

 Fish is a source of protein.

 Fish farms are used to supply fish because fish's food safety is monitored.

Maintenance of water quality

 Fish may come in contact with unclean water that contains sewage waste and chemicals.
 Fish farming, water is filtered to make sure fish do not come in contact with anything that is unsafe to ingest.
 Water is cleaned regularly so that the spread of disease is minimised and oxygen levels are kept high enough in
order for the respiration of fish to be maintained.

Control of intraspecific and interspecific predation

Intraspecific
Competition between same species of fish

 No overcrowding
 Separate sizes and ages of fish
 Supply enough food
 Separate fish by gender

Interspecific
Competition between different species of fish

 Separate fish by species (one species per cage)

 Cover cage with mesh (fencing area)
 Supply enough food.
 Separate fish by gender

Control of disease

 Water in tanks should be changed regularly and their surroundings to be sterilised often.
 Small amounts of fish kept per cage will limit the amount of fish affected by the disease.
 Fish constantly supplied with sterile water so that wastes and excess nutrients are washed out constantly.
 Use of pesticides & antibiotics. However, antibiotics may not biodegrade and will then be passed onto humans
when they consume the fish.

Removal of waste products

 Changing water in the tank

Quality and frequency of feeding

 Fish are fed often and in small amounts.

 Fed with protein-rich food.
 Hormones are added to the water to speed growth.

The use of selective breeding

 Fish with desired characteristics are chosen (higher yield of meat/bigger etc)
 Two animals with desired characteristics are chosen and bred together.
 Offspring that have desired characteristics are chosen and bred with others who have desired characteristics.
 Fish who do not have desired characteristics are prevented from breeding.
 This is repeated over generations.
