WAVES AND

TIDES

WAVES

What is a wave ?

Waves are movements on the surface of the water.

WHAT CAUSES WAVES:

Waves are created by energy passing

through water, causing it to move in a
circular motion. Wind-driven waves, or
surface waves, are created by the friction
between wind and the surface water. As
the wind blows across the surface of the
ocean or a lake, the continual
disturbance creates a wave crest.

HOW DO WAVES TRAVEL?

Waves travel because

gravity pulls the water in
the crests downward.
Forced out from beneath
the falling crests, the
falling water pushes the
former troughs upward,
and the wave moves to a
new position.
As shown in this video -->

THE MOVEMENT OF WAVES

Waves are changes in patterns that move along the water’s surface. The water itself doesn’t
move very far, but waves can move thousands of Kilometers across the surface of the ocean.
EFFECTS WAVES HAVE ON SHORLINES & WHAT
HAPPENS WHEN WAVES HIT THE SHORE:

Waves are created by energy

passing through water, causing it to
move in a circular motion.
Wind-driven waves, or surface
waves, are created by the friction
between wind and surface water.
As the wind blows across the
surface of the ocean or a lake, the
continual disturbance creates a
wave crest.

TIDES

Tides are the regular rising and falling of very large bodies
of water.

High Tide: Highest level water will reach on shore Low

Tide: Lowest level water will reach on shore. There are two
high tides and two low tides per day.

WHAT CAUSES TIDES?

1. The rotation of the Earth

Centrifugal force causes
matter to want to, “Escape”.
2. Gravitational Force
