Situational Analysis

Plastic is a synthetic organic polymer made from petroleum with properties ideally suited for a
wide variety of applications, including packaging, building and construction, household and sports
equipment, vehicles, electronics and agriculture. Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every
year, half of which is used to design single-use items such as shopping bags, cups and straws (UNFCCC).

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (e.g. plastic bottles, bags,
and microbeads) in the Earth’s environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans.
They are inexpensive and durable making the very adaptable for different uses; as a result humans
produce a lot of plastic. However, the chemical structure of most plastics renders them resistant to
many natural processes of degredation and as a result they are slow to degrade (Wikipedia).

According to the GMA news online article published on 2018 that data on 2015 study shows that
Philippine wastes weigh 6875.84 tons of plastic per day of which 81% is mismanaged. Non-
biodegradable waste is a crucial concern everywhere in the world. The bulk of the world’s waste consists
of the hard-to-breakdown products, such as plastics. It cannot be recycled thus this particular waste
contributes largely to the world’s increasing garbage problem.

Nearly half of all plastic products are discarded after a single use and they end up in proper
landfills where they take up decades to break down and decompose that continue to pollute the soil and
water. With so much plastic accumulating in our environment, it is necessary to find a solution for plastic
pollution. Using eco-friendly bags is one of the easiest and most economical ways to reduce the use of
plastics. Plastic pollution has end up one of the most pressing environmental issues, as unexpectedly
growing production of disposable plastic products overwhelms the world’s capability to deal with them.

An eco-bag is a type of shopping bag which can be reused many times. It is an alternative to
single-use paper or plastic bags. It is often a tote bag made from fabric such as canvas, natural fibers
such as Jute, woven synthetic fibers, or a thick plastic that is more durable than disposable plastic bags,
allowing multiple uses (Debbie Meyer, 2018).

Eco-bags, provide a clean, safe, and eco-friendly alternative, they can be stronger load than
conventional bags. They eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags that have proven to harm the
environment and also present a serious disposal problem. The biggest positive of using reusable bag is
that that it doesn’t leave an amount of litter on land and in the ocean

Pampas grass is a quickly growing grass that forms massive clumps along roadsides, steep cliffs,
and river banks. It has stiff stems and sharp-edged leaves, it can also serve as a living hedge or fence.
People only used the flowers of pampas grass. They are using it indoors as a pretty decoration in
everything from living rooms to bathrooms. While the grass is commonly being ignored by the people.
So instead of just ignoring it, the researchers found an alternative use of it.

With these present problems and with the help of pampas grass, the researchers proposed this
study to provide an affordable and durable eco-friendly bag that can help the environment and the
country lessen the use of plastics.
