A. OBJECTIVES
 To test different food samples for the presence of nutrients: carbohydrate (starch), vitamin C and fat.

B. THEORY
Nutrients needed by the human body include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Iodine Reagent is used to test carbohydrate (starch) and vitamins.
Betadine can be used as a substitute for Iodine Reagent in food tests because it contains 10%
Providone Iodine which is equivalent to 1% Iodine. If Betadine is dripped on food containing starch, there will
be a color change. This color change is due to the reaction of starch with iodine in the form of a complex
compound of Amanium iodide which produces a blue-black color.
While in the vitamin C test, Betadine will be mixed with water and used as an indicator whose color will
turn clear when food containing vitamin C is added to it.
There are different methods used for testing the presence of fats in the given food samples. A simple
and easy experiment with the help of a filter paper or Opaque Paper called the Paper Spot Test. We can
observe an oily patch on the paper, which indicates the presence of fats in the given food sample.

I. Test for Fat

1. Food will be used are cooked rice, natural orange juice, cheddar cheese, margarine, fried egg, tapioca
flour, banana
2. Preparing the food samples: take about 3 tea spoons of each of the food sample and place them in
different plastic cups and label them
3. Put one Opaque paper (A4 paper) on a plate
4. Take little amount of each of the food samples and place it on the opaque paper then give the names.
5. Leave the experiment undisturbed for 3 to 5 min aside.
6. Now straighten the paper and allow it to complete either by keeping it in sunlight or near the open
window.

II. Test for Starch

1. Use the rest of the food samples from Test for Fat. (Take a picture to show color before testing)
2. Each of food samples is dripped with 5 drops of betadine
3. Observe the color change in the sample and write the result on the table below. (Data Result)
4. Take a picture of the result and upload to Data Result. (To show the color after testing)
III. Test for Vitamin C
1. Drip Betadine as much as 1 ml (20 drops) into a glass containing 50 mL (8 table spoon) of water
2. Do the same on the other 3 plastic cups.
3. Insert 8 table spoon of each sample (You C 1000, Buavita Guava and Milk) to each of the plastic cup
and 1 tablet of XonCe to the other plastic cup.
