1.0. SCOPE

1.1. This general procedure refers to the application of a controlled heated

band encompassing a butt welded joint in pipe to effect a post weld heat
treatment in accordance with the governing code of practice,
specification, or drawing.

1.2. This general procedure applies to welded joints with the axis of the pipe
being horizontal or vertical.

1.3. Post Weld heat treatment temperatures of up to 800° Centigrade may be

achieved on the basis of this procedure and the equipment mentioned
herein.

2.0. PERSONNEL

2.1. The senior operator responsible for the performance of post weld heat
treatment under this procedure shall be approved by the AMIGOS Limited
Quality Control Manager, who shall approve all heat treatment
instructions procedures and final reports.

3.0. METHOD.

3.1. Low voltage (65 volt) flat ceramic pad electrical resistance heating
elements, in direct contact with the pipe surface, shall be used as the
source of heat energy.

3.2. Each flat ceramic heating pad shall be rated 65 volts, 2700 watts, and are
available in a variety of sizes, to suit differing pipe diameters, wall
thicknesses and weld geometry.

3.3. Each flat ceramic pad will have twist-lock connectors, to effect connection
to electrical supply cables.

4.0. ARRANGEMENT

4.1. Flat ceramic pad heating elements shall be secured to the entire weld
circumference, forming the heated band; the heated band shall be
positioned such that the weld is central to the heated band.

4.2. The width of the heated band shall be as per code requirement as a
minimum, however, it is the practice of this company that the installed
heated band be approximately seven times the wall thickness. This will
ensure that:

1. The through wall temperature gradient is minimized for any given

heating rate.

2. The final peak temperature required by code or specification can be

achieved, and can be achieved without undue risk of heater failure.

4.3. The heating arrangement will be such that the ceramic heating pads do
not overlap by more than 25 mm or the wall thickness, whichever is the
lesser.

Gaps between ceramic heating pads shall not exceed 25 mm or the wall
thickness, whichever is the lesser.

4.4. Where the heated band consists of multiple ceramic heating pads, or
where there are specific temperature control requirements because of
pipe diameter, the ceramic heating pads may be grouped into heating
circuits. Each heating circuit forming a heated zone, shall be monitored by
a thermocouple attached to the weld, in the center of the heated zone.

In the absence of any specific control requirements, it will be the policy of

this company to configure heated zones as per table 1.

5.0. TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT

5.1. THERMOCOUPLES.

Thermocouples, type ‘K’, comprising of two wires, nickel-chrome/nickel-

alumel, 21swg will be attached directly to the work piece using
capacitance discharge welding techniques. The two wires will be attached
with a maximum gap of 6 mm. Care will be taken to ensure that the two
wires do not touch each other, nor the pipe surface. The thermocouple
hot junction will be protected by the application of a small amount of high
temperature cement.

Thermocouples will be installed one per heated zone as a minimum, as

table 1 or as per code of practice, specification, or client requirements.

Other thermocouples may be installed to confirm gradient temperatures,

as required by the governing code of practice, specification, or client
requirements.

5.2. THERMOCOUPLE EXTENSION CABLE.

Compensating cable, type copper-constantan, shall be used to connect

each thermocouple to the temperature recorder. The connection to the
thermocouple and to the temperature recorder shall be via polarized two-
pin plug and socket connectors.

When routing the extension cable, care shall be taken to ensure that it is
not affected by heat, electrical interference or subject to mechanical
damage.

5.3. TEMPERATURE RECORDERS.

Temperature recorders shall be potentiometric instruments, capable of

self-compensation for ambient temperatures. They shall be suitable for
type ‘K’ thermocouples and have required accuracy over a scale of 0° to
1000° Centigrade.

Temperature recorders shall be multi channel, each channel recording

the temperature reading of one thermocouple, onto a time versus
temperature strip chart. Each channel shall stamp a unique color or
number such that easy reference can be made to the channel and
thermocouple number. The time interval between stamps for the same
channel shall be 7.5 minutes maximum.

During the post weld heat treatment cycle, the recorder shall be securely
locked.

6.0. TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Temperature control may be achieved by manual, semi-automatic or fully

automatic means.

For fully automatic control, the temperature and time parameters will be
programmed into a microprocessor. Once the program is initiated, it will run until
completion.

In the case of manual control, adjustment of an energy regulator in each heating

circuit will determine the amount of time as a percentage that the heating circuit
is energized. Ultimate control is achieved by constant reference to the recorder
strip chart, and by adjustment to the energy regulator.

A temperature controller (adjustable thermostat) in conjunction with an energy

regulator in each heating circuit will enable semi-automatic control to be
achieved; the energy regulator being used to control heating and cooling rates,
and the temperature controller overriding the energy regulator to stabilize the
‘soak’ or peak temperature.

It shall be the aim of the heat treatment operator to stabilize the soak
temperature towards the upper temperature limit allowed by the heating
specification.

During the heating segment of the heat treatment cycle, the heating rate may be
significantly lower than the maximum allowable rate. The Company has adopted
this practice in order to minimize thermal shock, sharp temperature gradients
and to maximize the life of the heating elements.

7.0. THERMAL INSULATION

7.1. Ceramic fibre roll, 25 mm thick, with a density of 96 kg/m³, or mineral

wool 50 mm thick with a density of 75 kg/m³ may be used with thermal
insulation. Alternatively, high grade knitted silica blanket may be used.

7.2. The insulation will be applied centered over the heated band, and
secured with iron wire or banding straps.

The applied thickness and extent of the insulated band, will be as dictated
by site conditions, the heating procedure and temperature gradient

limitations. As a minimum, the insulated band shall extend 7 x wall

thickness away from the center of the heated band on both sides of the
weld, and the applied thickness shall be 50 mm or as conditions demand.

All electrical connections, and heater cold tail transitions shall remain
outside the insulated band.

Additional insulation will be installed to block open pipe ends, and to

heavy fittings close to the heated band.

* Mineral wool shall be of a grade that it will not sinter at temperatures

below 650° C. Generally, mineral wool shall not be used when peak heat
treatment temperatures exceed 650° C.

7.3. SAFETY.

Dust masks and safety glasses shall be worn when working with thermal
insulation.

8.0. DOCUMENTATION.

On completion of the heat treatment cycle, the temperature chart shall be fully
referenced as to the relationship of thermocouples to temperature chart
indications; additionally, the temperature chart and the heat treatment report will
contain the following information:

1. Weld Identification(s)
2. Date of heat treatment.
3. Heat Treatment specification.
4. Thermocouple locations and numbers. (attach sketch)
5. Operator’s name.
6. Controlled heating ramp, soak period and controlled cooling ramp shall be
marked on the temperature chart.
