Critically evaluate the usefulness of portfolios as an assessment tool.

QUESTION

Despite its popularity, the use of portfolios as an assessment tool has been criticised. Elaborate
on any FOUR (4) main criticisms and discuss if these criticisms override the usefulness of
portfolio assessment? Justify your answer.

Answer:
 Extra time needed to plan an assessment system.
 The gathering of necessary data and work samples can make portfolio
bulky and difficult to manage
 Scoring portfolios involve extensive use of subjective evaluation
procedures and thus open to the question of reliability
 Scheduling of individual portfolio conferences is difficult and time-
consuming

Usefulness of portfolio assessment

Accept either “YES” or “NO” answer as long as the justifications are


appropriate and convincing.

Possible argument against criticisms

 The portfolio provides for formative assessment as well summative


assessment).
 Emphasis is more on monitoring students’ progress towards achieving
the learning outcomes of a particular subject, course or programme.
 Improves student achievement through feedback and self-reflection.
 Allows the teacher to see the student as an individual, each with his or
her own unique characteristics, needs and strengths

students according to their performance on tests.
