Write an essay no longer than 500 words (Arial 11, double-spacing) discussing
ONE (1) popular genre in Malaysian Cinema. Be sure to include the codes and
conventions of the chosen genre. Use TWO (2) films to support your discussion.

For the topic of this essay is about the genre of romance in Malaysian cinema.

Romance is one of the biggest genres in Malaysian cinema because the desire of

Malaysian filmmakers is to deliver strong messages about dealing lives and also

show the kind of love stories that might catch people’s attention. According to

Malaysian romance films, the story usually starts with an enemy and eventually

become lovers along with a very challenging life they have to deal with. For example,

a girl lives in a western life with her rich parents on her side and only know how to

live with ease until she met a waitress guy who have the opposite life of hers. The

girl would be so irritated by the guy and wishes for him to disappear from her life for

good. Or maybe a guy who does not learn anything about the good deeds of

becoming an Islamic until he met a village girl with strong faith and she be the one

who leads him to the right path. Those were the time where they meet in very

complicated ways and turn each other’s lives upside down. When the time comes,

the story will lead them to working together on a mission to end the story’s conflict.

With that, people will feel the warmth after watching them getting along and expect to

see them fall in love with each other in the future of the story.
One example of a film that can support my point of view is the very famous

‘Istanbul Aku Datang’ directed by Bernard Chauly. The story of a young woman

traveling to another country to meet her boyfriend in the hope that her boyfriend will

propose to her as soon as she gets there. The young woman then unexpectedly

meets someone new and the situation becomes complicated as she has to stay the

night in his house. The man irritates her at first but eventually, she found out that the

man has a very great personality and she turns out to be very comfortable with him

around.

Another example of a film that might also support my point of view is ‘Gol &

Gincu’ which also directed by Bernard Chauly. The story of a college boy who asks

her girlfriend for a breakup as they both have different interests. The girl only knows

about dresses and makeups which can make her boyfriend live in a boring life. Until

that one time, she decided to become a soccer player and have two interests in her

life. Little did she know, a new guy enters her life who happens to work at the soccer

field. The girl was annoyed by him as he always looks at her since it is his first time

seeing a girl became a soccer player. As he helps her out achieving her dreams,

they both finally get along with each other.
