Introduction:
Is electricity found only inside the atom? Can objects larger than atoms have an electric charge? When you walked over a
carpeted floor and found that you got a slight shock upon touching a metallic object, you produced an electric charge.

Objectives:
For you to complete the activity, you should be able to:
1. Identify the electric charge of objects.

Materials:
Glass rod, plastic comb, woolen cloth, silk cloth, small bits of paper

Procedure:
1. Rub a plastic comb with a piece of woolen cloth. Place it near some small bits of paper.
2. Rub a glass rod with a piece of silk cloth. Place it near small bits of paper.

Observations:
Guide Questions:
1. Why did the comb pick up the bits of paper?
- Run a plastic comb through a woolen cloth and place it near small pieces of paper to observe static
electricity. The comb pulls the paper in. The charged comb induces an opposite charge in the paper, and because
opposite charges attract, the paper sticks to the comb.
2. Why did the glass rod pick up the bits of paper?
- Rubbing a piece of silk with positively charged glass, the positively charged glass rod attracts the pieces
of paper in the same direction as the plastic rod. The material that gained electrons now has a net
negative charge, while the material that lost electrons now has a net positive charge.
3. What was the purpose of rubbing the comb with a woolen cloth and the glass rod with a silk cloth?
- When you rub a glass rod with silk, the silk removes electrons from the rod, leaving a positive charge.
When you rub a hard rubber rod with wool, it picks up electrons from the wool and becomes negatively
charged.

Evaluation:
Encircle the BEST letter of your choice.

a. By hanging
b. By rubbing
c. By biting
2. What charge are given by woolen cloth to the comb?

c. Neutral charge
3. What charge is given by the silk cloth to the comb?
a. Negative charge
b. Positive charge

4. Like charges will:
a. Attract
b. Repel
c. None of these
5. Unlike charges will:
a. Positive
b. Attract
c. Repel
