Industrial Overview and List of Prospect

Sales Management

Dr. Prof. Muhammad Nauman Abbasi

Institute of Management Sciences, BZU.

1- History of Logistics

Between the 18th and 19th Century, the world started to get Industrialized.

Need for Manufacturing grew to meet the increasing demands of commodities.

First Railroad built in the Early 19th Century to carry Stone, Grains, Ore, Sand, & Gravel.

In the Mid 19th Century and in the early 20th Century, Suez Canal and Panama Lake (shown
below, respectively) were the major developments to conduct efficient and faster voyages.
The Trucks got better and better with passage of time. Companies like Volvo and Mack,
started investing in making better trucks which can carry more loads.

The Air Freight got advanced. The advancements in aviation got much more intense. Most of
the international shipping is being done through air.

World wars increased the need for transporting goods in bulk for the military (ammunition, food
supplies, reinforcement troops, etc.), this is when the logistics captured more eyeballs and
people started to increase the efficiency in moving goods.

2- Trends in that industry

There was only one way flow of goods, but now we can see the Forward and Reverse flow of
goods which means that supplier sends the goods to the buyer, and buyer has the power and
option to send the defective items back to the supplier, so this is what the reverse flow of goods
is.
3- Trends Prediction

i)- Reverse Logistics

There was no such concept of reverse logistics before. Items were manufactured by the firms
and were delivered to the customers. The concept of reverse logistics can be seen nowadays
but it’s implication is quite limited.

The concept of reverse logistics was introduced to give VALUE to the customer. The reverse
logistics also helps to dispose-off a product in a sustainable manner.

ii)- Electric Trucks

To save more cost, the replacement of old petrol and diesel fueled trucks are going to be
replaced with the Electric Trucks. So, this is something that’s going to be quite interesting for the
logistics companies since they can reduce their cost of hauling for long distances.

The drivers will be able to charge their trucks during their resting-hours on any of the charging
stations.

Moreover, this transformation is going to be a revolutionary step for the logistics companies
since it has comparatively ZERO cost as compared to the diesel-fueled trucks. So, logistic
companies can offer reduced prices, (resources are provided at the end).

iii)- EV Charging Stations Infrastructure

The major players in the petrol industry might move towards the charging stations. The charging
station infrastructure is currently being developed in the US after the inclination of Americans
towards Tesla (electric car).

In the near future, when electric cars are going to take over the roads, the entire world will
eventually devise and install a complete charging station infrastructure.

iv)- In Pakistan, the Impact of CPEC on Logistics

By the end of the CPEC project, the logistics industry is going to experience a great boom.
China is basically using this corridor to foster their trade, that’s economically quite a healthy
venture for Pakistan.

Like, an approximate figure provided by our instructor Mr. Nauman Abbasi, was around the
increment of 20,000 trucks to around 200,000 Trucks on the road.
This shows a clear picture of what the future in Logistics is going to be. Eventually, the retail
sector is going to get much advantage of this, since the logistics cost will be reduced and hence,
the retails stores can offer lower prices as well.

v)- Road Infrastructure

The drastic increase in the number of trucks on the road would definitely require more wide road
networks. This network is being developed under the CPEC project.
