EXPERIMENT NO. 3

Single Side Band (SSB)

Aim:
1. Generate SSB-SC AM Signal using Phase Shift modulator.
2. Demodulate SSB-SC AM Signal using synchronous demodulator.

Apparatus: Phase Shift modulator, Synchronous demodulator, digital multimeter, function

generator, CRO, wires, power supply

Theory:
SSB-SC:
Double Sideband Suppressed Carrier modulated signal consists of two sidebands. The
sidebands contain the information. One of the sidebands can be eliminated as both the sidebands
contain the same information.
The process of suppressing one of the sidebands along with the carrier and transmitting a single
sideband is called as Single Sideband Suppressed Carrier system or simply SSB-SC. It is
plotted as shown in the following figure: -

Figure 1: SSBSC

Mathematically, we can represent the equation of SSBSC wave as

s(t)=AmAc/2cos[2π(fc+fm)t] for the upper sideband, OR
s(t)=AmAc/2cos[2π(fc−fm)t] for the lower sideband
Phase Shift Modulator:
Phase Shift Modulator For generation of SSBSC signal a phase shift modulator was used. It is
a phase shift technique that causes one of the side bands to be cancelled out. It makes use of
two balanced modulators in which both the modulators are provided with RF and AF input
which are 90o out of phase.

Figure: Block Diagram of Phase Shift Method

The output from the two modulators is added using summer thus giving the upper sideband
frequency while the lower sideband frequency gets suppressed out. When the outputs from the
modulators is subtracted, we get the lower sideband frequency output, while the upper sideband
frequency gets suppressed out

Synchronized Demodulator:
The process of extracting the original message from SSBSC wave is known as demodulation
of SSBSC. Here for the process of extracting the original message signal from DSBSC wave
a coherent demodulator is used. The same carrier signal (which is used for generating
DSBSC signal) is used to detect the message signal. Hence, this process of detection is called
as coherent or synchronous detection.

Observation:

1) Information signal :

2) Carrier signal
3) Carrier signal 90 degree out of phase

4) DSBSC modulated signal

5) SSB-SC wave
6) Demodulated wave
CONCLUSION:
1) We learned the frequency spectrum and application of Single Sideband Suppressed
Carrier Signal. Single Sideband Suppressed Carrier Signal is efficient in
transmission because it only one side band upper or lower and the other side band
is suppressed along with carrier to bring application in domains of power saving
2) Two phase shift modulator is used to generate a single sideband suppressed carrier
modulated signal. RF and AF input which were 90 degree out of phase to each
other were given to both the balanced modulators where RF is again provide 90
degree phase shift to bring the output of second balanced modulator 180 degree
out of phase w.r.t to DSB signal output received at first balanced modulator.
3) By adding the outputs of the two balanced modulators at summing point, the lower
sideband along with the carrier gets suppressed and by subtracting the outputs of
the two balanced modulators at summing point, the upper sideband along with the
carrier gets suppressed.
4) Synchronous demodulator was used to regenerate the carrier component with the
help of the waveforms obtained in the CRO we were able to analyze the signals
used in the process and plotted the same
