A. Title
THE PRACTICES OF ENGLISH CLUB DURING TEACHING ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM
(a Descriptive Study at MA Al-Mujtahid Pontianak in the Academic Year of
2021/2022)
B. Research background

English is one of the subjects studied in school. The curriculum in Indonesia

has established English lessons as a compulsory subject, especially at the senior high
school. "Foreign languages can be used as the language of instruction in certain
educational units to support students' foreign language skills." (Constitution of the
Republic of Indonesia Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System
With, 2006). That is one of the important reasons humans must learn English in
school. English is also an international language that we can use to communicate
around the world. That is why learning English is crucial not only for the world of
education but also in economics, politics, science, technology, and culture. However,
not all students can understand English learning material well because of their weak
basic English skills. Students need tutoring outside school hours to improve their
English skills well.
Improve English skills could be achieved by either practicing individually or
practicing in a group. In order to improve students' English Skills, team four is
implementing the English Club to the students at MA Al-Mujtahid during the
Teaching Assistance Program. English Club is an extracurricular made by team four
and the school during the Teaching Assistance program that focuses on improving
students' basic English skills and fulfills one of the assessment indicators for the
Teaching Assistance Program. According to Malu & Smedley (2016:10) English club
is an informal gathering of individuals who meet regularly and often voluntarily and
who come from different parts of a community, town, or village for the express
purpose of practicing English. Implementation of the English club as an
extracurricular is beneficial for students in improving their English skills because the
students have a vast opportunity to practice. Students were required to exchange ideas
with mates, discuss a particular topic, talk in front of the class, and work in a group in
the English club. Moreover, learning English in the club is undoubtedly more fun than
learning in a formal class because of the learning method used with games, songs, and
others.
The English club at MA Al-Mujtahid is carried out by three selected EFL
students for the Teaching Assistance Program. The teaching Assitance program is one
of the programs in the MBKM curriculum (Merdeka Studi Merdeka Campus)
implemented by the English Education Study Program of the Institute of Teacher
Training and Education of the Indonesian Teachers Association (IKIP-PGRI)
Pontianak. Merdeka Campus is part of the Merdeka Learning policy by the Ministry
of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, which
provides opportunities for students to hone skills according to their talents and
interests by going directly into the world of work as preparation for the future
(Penyusun, 2020).
So far, much research about English Club has been done. For example,
Ekawati (2017) shows the English Club's implementation at SDIT Az-Zahra Sragen in
developing English skills. Some similar studies showed the implementation of the
English Club (Prabowo, 2020) and the advantages of the English Club (Wardatun,
2020) to enhance Students' speaking skills. English club also can implement for non-
English Departement (Noviyanti, Khuri'in & Mahsunah, 2021). The previous study
shown above has inspired the researcher to explore the practice of the English Club as
well. The difference between this research and the previous study is that this research
was conducted to the students at MA Al-Mujtahid Pontianak during Teaching
Assistance Program and EFL students from IKIP PGRI Pontianak.
This study aims to determine how was the implementation of the English club
and whats are the advantage of joining the English Club at MA Al-Mujtahid
Pontianak during the Teaching Assistance program so that it can be used as a
reference to the plan and development of the English Club in the implementation of
the next generation of Teaching Assistance Program.

E. Significance of study
The significance of this study can be viewed from both theoretical and practical
aspects, as described below:

F. Scope of the research
1. Research Variable
A variable is a characteristic or attribute of an individual or an organization
that (a) researchers can measure or observe and (b) varies among individuals or
organizations studied (Creswell, 2012:112). The variable in this research is English
Club as a single variable. A single variable may be an independent, a dependent, or an
intervening variable (Creswell, 2012:124).
2. Research terminology
a. English Club
English Club is an extracurricular made by our team and the school
during the Teaching Assistance program that focuses on improving students'
basic English skills and fulfills one of the assessment indicators for the
Teaching Assistance Program. The English Club is held every Saturday after
school. This activity provides students with basic English skills, such as
teaching about vocabulary interspersed with exciting games not to feel bored.
b. Advantages of English Club
The advantages of the English Club in this research are viewed from
students experienced who joined the English Club during the Teaching
Assistance Program at MA Al-Mujtahid Pontianak.

G. Research methodology
1. Research design
Research design is the framework of research methods and techniques chosen
by a researcher. This study uses descriptive research to describe the object of
research or research results. The descriptive research method is used to find out a
picture, situation, or something by describing it in as much detail as possible
based on the facts (Tabrhoni, 2021).
2. Population and Sample
a. Population
The population is the whole object to be studied. The population
element is the entire subject to be measured, a precise unit (Sugiyono,
2020:126). In this study, the population is the EFL students as an English
teacher in the English Club, the English teacher, and all students at MA Al-
Mujtahid Pontianak who joined the English Club.
b. Sample
The sample is part of the number and characteristics of the population.
In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling to choose the sample.
The samples were 3 EFL students as teachers in the English Club, 1 English
teacher, and five members of the English Club at MA Al-Mufjtahid
Pontianak..

3. Technique and Tool of Data Collection

Data collection systematically gathers and analyzes specific information to
proffer solutions to relevant questions and evaluate the results. Data collection can
be done in various settings, various sources, and various ways (Sugiyono,
2020:194). This part discusses how the research will collect data from the
participant. The tools use in this study are :
a. Observation
In this study, researchers used observation in the data collection
strategy. According to Sutrisno Hadi (1986) as cited in Sugiyono
(2020:203) observation is a complex process composed of various
biological and psychological processes. Observations to obtain data in the
form of the implementation of the English Club. The researcher will write
down all data and activities during observation using field notes and an
audio recorder to record the activity.
b. Interview
The interview is a question and answer activity by two or more people
to get information. According to Sugiyono (2015:317) an interview is a
meeting of two people to exchange information and ideas through question
and answer to construct meaning in a particular topic. Interviews were
conducted to collect data on the background of the English Club,
preparation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the English Club,
and collect data of the advantage of English Club viewed from students
perception.
c. Documentation
Documentation is the process of collecting evidence from information
such as pictures, quotes, newspaper clippings, and other reference
materials. This study focused on implementing activities, learning
outcomes, books, and materials to implement the English Club.
4. The technique of Data Analysis
Data analysis involves reviewing the data collected and synthesizing, and
making sense of what is observed (Syakur, 2020). The data analysis in this study
used qualitative research. According to Miles and Huberman (1984) as cited in
Sugiyono (2013) the activity of Qualitative data analysis is carried out
interactively and takes place continuously until complete so that the data is
saturated. The researcher used interactive activities to analyze data, namely data
reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification.
Research data can be trusted if the data has been tested for validity. To
validate the data, the researcher used technical triangulation and triangulation
sources. Technical triangulation means finding or collecting the same data of
several different techniques (Sari, 2018). Source triangulation means, to get data
from other sources separate from the same method (Sugiyono, 2013:241).
