I. Identification

1. This work by Diophantus is the earliest known treatise devoted to algebra. What we
have of the work is an assortment of 189 problems with solutions.

2. A book on calculations generally credited with bringing the Hindu-Arabic number


system and its arithmetic (as the system is now known) to Europe, and
launching the modern, Western-led, commercial world.

3. An unending sequence of natural numbers that begins 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55,
89, 144, 233, 377..

4. An Italian mathematician who lived from around 1170 to around 1250. Wrote the
book Liber Abacci and considered as the greatest mathematician of the middle ages.

5. This book written by Girolamo Cardano made known the solution of the cubic
equations by radicals and the solution of the quartic equations by radicals.

6. By winning the competition in 1535, He was famed as the discoverer of a formula to


solve cubic equations and his algebraic solution of cubic equations which was published
in Cardan's Ars Magna.

7. He wrote Principia Philosophiae which became the rage in intellectual circles. He also
wrote a treatise on physics (Le Monde), which stated the earth revolved around the sun.

8. English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author (described in
his own day as a "natural philosopher") who is widely recognized as one of the most
influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution.

9. In this book of Newton, he formulated the laws of motion and universal


gravitation that formed the dominant scientific viewpoint until it was superseded by
the theory of relativity.

10. He is known for his three laws of planetary motion. He related planetary motion to to
the regular solids, which lined up with six planets, and only six planets were known at
the time. He worked as chief assistant astronomer to Tycho Brahe.
11. He was one of the most reputed mathematicians and physicists of his time. He is
credited with inventing an early calculator, amazingly advanced for its time, called the
Pascaline.

12. He proved that the frequency method and the classical method are consistent
with one another in his book Ars Conjectandi in 1713.

13. He provided many tools to make the classical method more useful, including the
multiplication rule, in his book The Doctrine of Chances in 1718.

14. It was the first textbook on probability theory. The book was so popular, eventually
going through three editions.

15. He presented a mathematical theory of probability with an emphasis on scientific


applications in his 1812 book Theorie Analytique des Probabilities.

(d) A card is drawn at random from a deck of cards. Find the probability of getting the
King of heart.
(e) A die is rolled and a coin is tossed, find the probability that the die shows an odd
number and the coin shows a head.

III. Essay(10 points)

Give your thoughts on how important it is to study the history of mathematics and what
you have learned in this course through the whole semester. (atleast 2 paragraphs)

-Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or minus hate. But it gives us every reason to hope that every
problem has a solution.
