AIRWORTHINESS BULLETIN

Cessna 404, 425 and 441 Main Landing Gear AWB 32-022 Issue : 1
Trailing Link Inspection Date : 16 May 2013

1. Applicability
All Cessna model 404, 425 and 441 aircraft.
2. Purpose
To alert operators and maintainers to revised supplemental inspection
documents (SID) and maintenance manuals regarding main landing gear
trailing link inspections.
3. Background
CASA has been informed about conflicting instructions between Cessna 404,
425 and 441 maintenance manuals and SID. The magnetic particle inspection
of the trailing link provided in the SID required removal of the axle from the
assembly in preparation for the task. The maintenance manual, however,
explicitly stated that disassembly of the axle and fork assembly was prohibited.
Cessna recently published the documents listed in the reference section of this
AWB, to rectify the issue.
In summary, the documents detail;
• the removal of the prohibition to disassemble the axle from the trailing
link assembly
• the addition to the maintenance manuals that if it is necessary to
remove the axle from the trailing link assembly, refer to the applicable
SID for assembly and disassembly procedures
• disassembly and assembly procedures in each SID, with specific
instructions to discard the pins which attach the axle to the trailing link
upon disassembly; and coat the interface surfaces of the axle and
trailing link with primer prior to reassembly
• that heat should not be applied to the trailing link. However, the
maintainer may freeze the axle to make the assembly easier
4. Recommendation
If the trailing link was heated to 175oC or more during reassembly, attachment
pins not replaced or primer not applied to interface surfaces of the axle and
trailing link, CASA strongly recommends contacting your local Cessna
Technical Representative to receive continuing airworthiness guidance for their
particular circumstance.
