I. GENERALITIES
We normally use WILL to speak about the future. It is always combined with

another verb.

Since WILL is classified as a modal verb (like can, would, could, should) it has

the same characteristics:

1. It does not change in the third person (i.e., he, she, it)

2. It is always combined with another verb in the base form (i.e., without

3
'to')

3. We don't use it with 'Do' in questions or negatives.

Examples of Will:

 I will go to the cinema tonight.

 He will play tennis tomorrow.

 She will be happy with her exam results.

 They will take the bus to the South next week.

II. When to use WILL

We use WILL in the following circumstances:

1. For things that we decide to do now. (Rapid Decisions)

This is when you make a decision at that moment, in a spontaneous way.

 I'll call a taxi for you.

 I think we'll go right now. (I just decided this right now)

 Which one? Um, I will have the chicken sandwich please.

2. When we think or believe something about the future. (Prediction)

This can be based on personal judgement or opinion.

 The President will not be re-elected at the next election.

 I think it will rain later so take an umbrella with you.

 I think you will find the movie interesting.

Notice how you often use "I think..." before the subject + will.

4
3. To make an offer, a promise or a threat.

 You look tired. I'll finish the dishes for you.

 I will do my best to help you.

 If you say anything I will kill you!

 I will have it ready by tomorrow.

 I'll drive you to work if you want.

 Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. (won't = will not)

4. For a habit that is a predictable behavior

 My daughter will fall asleep as soon as she is put into bed.

 He will give up if he starts losing. He always does that.

5. You use WON'T when someone refuses to do something.

 I told him to clean his room but he won't do it.

 She won't listen to anything I say.

III. Negative Sentences with WILL

In the negative, we add NOT to the end of WILL and not to the main verb. (=

will not)

Examples:

 I will not be in the office tomorrow. (correct)

5
I will be not in the office tomorrow. (Incorrect)

 They will not stay here. (correct)

They will stay not here. (Incorrect)

IV. Contractions
It is possible to use contractions in both positive and negative sentences.

With positive contractions WILL becomes 'LL and is joined to the subject:

POSITIVE CONTRACTION NEGATIVE CONTRACTION

I will I’ll I will not I won’t

You will You’ll You will not You won’t

He will He’ll He will not He won’t

She will She’ll She will not She won’t

It will It’ll It will not It won’t

We will We’ll We will not We won’t

You will You’ll You will not You won’t

They will They’ll They will not They won’t

V. Questions
To form a question using WILL, we reverse the order of the subject and WILL:

WILL + Subject + Verb

Examples:

Will they win the cup?

6
- Yes, they will.

- No, they won't.

Will you tell him the truth?

- Yes, I will.

- No, I won't.

Will she get angry?

INTRODUCTION
56 years ago, the African-American leader engaged in the struggle for the

recognition of the civil rights of his people, was assassinated in Harlem, a

district of New York. This leader was Malcolm X.

Who was he?

I. WHO IS MALCOLM X?
Malcolm Little, known as Malcolm X, is an African-American preacher and
9
human rights activist. Born in 1925 in Nebraska, he is the son of Earl Little, a

Baptist carpenter and preacher who supported the return of African Americans to

Africa and opposed their integration into the United States. When he was only a

child, his father died when a tram was crushed. Like the black community, he is

convinced that this is an assassination by a group close to the Ku Klux Klan.

His mother having lost custody of her

children, Malcom X grows up without

landmarks. Despite good academic results, he

realizes that his black status in the United States

is and will always be an obstacle to his success.

He fell into drugs and delinquency, and was

arrested in Boston in 1946. It was in prison that

he refined his education, taking an interest in

books and religion.

While in prison, Malcolm earns the nickname "Satan" because of his hatred

of Christianity, the Bible, and God. He begins to read the books in the prison

library. He soon developed a fierce appetite for reading, before being prone to

astigmatism. In several letters from prison, but also afterwards, Malcolm will

insist on the importance of his self-taught education. Thus, in a letter of

February 15, 1950, he wrote to a certain Raymond: “My confinement is of a

different nature; I am finishing my fourth year of an eight to ten-year prison

10
sentence… but these four years of imprisonment have turned out to be the most

rewarding of my twenty-four years on this earth and I feel that 'this gift of Time'

was a gift that Allah gave me, his way of saving me from the certain destruction

towards which I was advancing”.

In 1952, he was released and joined the Muslim organization Nation of

Islam. He then calls himself Malcom X in order to erase his slave’s name.

Appreciated for his skills as a speaker, he became a preacher and advocated

black separatism.

II. Malcolm X and the Nation of

Islam
Shortly after his release, Malcolm Little met Elijah Muhammad in Chicago,

which marked his full integration into the Nation of Islam. Quite quickly, he

changes his last name to "X". Malcolm explains that this name represented the

rejection of his "slave name" in the absence of his real name of African origin; in

11
fact, in slave America before 1863, the master required his slaves to take his

name in order to "mark" them as his things, hence this rejection. The "X" also

represents both the mark applied to the arm of some slaves and the mathematical

unknown, which symbolizes the unknown of the original name. This vision has

led many members of the Nation of Islam to change their name to "X", like his

future wife, Betty X, or to take Muslim names, which are assumed to be more

authentic.

In the interval between his conversion to the

cause of the Nation of Islam in 1952 and his

separation from the organization in 1964, he fully

espouses the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, in

particular the fact of referring to whites as

"devils".”, Created by a misguided breeding

program of a black scientist, Yacoub. X predicts

the inevitable and imminent return of blacks to

what he sees as their natural place, namely at the top of the social ladder and the

social order. Malcolm knows that his fame becomes a cause of considerable

jealousy at Nation of Islam, and tries not to fuel it during his public appearances.

But he soon emerges, however, as the second most influential leader of the

Nation of Islam, after Elijah Muhammad himself. He opened additional temples,

including one in Philadelphia. He is often credited with an important role in the

12
growth of the organization, which grew from 500 members in 1952 to 30,000 in

1963.

In 1959, Malcolm made visits to many

countries including Ghana, Sudan,

Nigeria, Iran, Syria and Egypt, in

particular to meet with religious and

political leaders.

The pressure of the FBI and the police on Malcolm X and his family increased

between 1960 and 1964, a crucial period for the movement in which differences

appeared between the leaders.

In 1964, Malcolm X split from the group and embraced Sunni Islam, with the

activist adopting the Muslim name of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Renouncing the separatist beliefs of the “Nation of Islam,” the charismatic

leader in the civil rights struggle, has attempted to internationalize the plight of

African Americans and other oppressed around the world.

13
The Nation of Islam movement increased its threats and pressure on El-Shabazz,

and on February 14, 1965, an incendiary bomb targeted his house. He survived,

but said the attack was carried out "on the orders of Elijah Muhammad".

El-Shabazz was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem on February

21, 1965.

Three members of the Nation of Islam have been convicted of his murder.

CONCLUSION

Malcolm X was a very strong advocate for the equality of African Americans in

the United States. Later in his life, he became a staunch defender of the rights of

all, regardless of the color of their skin. Malcolm stood up for what he believed

in no matter who was trying to fight the message he was trying to spread to the
14
world. He constantly faced adversity including drugs, prison, bad press, the loss

of the man he believed in most, Elijah Muhammad, death threats and hatred, but

he continued to convey his message to anyone who hears it.

Malcolm X had a message that everyone should hear, regardless of the color of

their skin, sadly he was killed for trying to share his message with the world.
