1. When the 0.05-kg body is in the position shown, the linear spring is stretched 10
mm. Determine the force P required to break contact at C. Complete solutions
for (a) including the effects of the weight and (b) neglecting the weight.
2. Determine the angle ɵ at which the link ABC is held in equilibrium if member BD
moves 2 in. to the right. The springs arc originally un-stretched when ɵ = 0º.
Each spring has the stiffness shown. The springs remain horizontal since they are
attached to roller guides.

3. A lever AB is hinged at C and attached to a control cable at A. If the lever is
subjected to a 500-N horizontal force at B, determine (a) the tension in the cable,
(b) the reaction at C.
4. A block placed under the head of the claw hammer as shown greatly facilitates
the extraction of the nail. If a 50-lb pull on the handle is required to pull the nail,
calculate the tension T in the nail and the magnitude A of the force exerted by
the hammer head on the block. The contacting surfaces at A are sufficiently
rough to prevent slipping.

5. A 100-kg uniform rectangular plate is supported in the position shown by hinges
A and B and by cable DCE that passes over a frictionless hook at C. Assuming that
the tension is the same in both parts of the cable, determine (a) the tension in
the cable, (b) the reactions at A and B. Assume that the hinge at B does not exert
any axial thrust.
3
7. Determine the component of reaction that the thrust bearing A and cable BC
exert on tile bar.
8. A 200-mm lever and a 240-mm-diameter pulley are welded to the axle BE that
is supported by bearings at C and D. If a 720-N vertical load is applied at A when
the lever is horizontal, determine (a) the tension in the cord, (b) the reactions at
C and D. Assume that the bearing at D does not exert any axial thrust.

9. The member is supported by a pin at A and a cable BC. If the load at D is 300 lb.
determine the x, y, z components of reaction at the pin A and the tension in
cable BC.
