HIST 105: Survey of Global History

Project Topic: “Everyday History”

Introduction:

•Do you know that Ancient Egyptians used cosmetics, perfumes, mirrors and jewelry?
•Do you know the secrets of staying healthy and surviving to old age in ancient Greece?
•Do you know that leisure time in Anglo-Saxon England included board games, storytellers,
and minstrel playing the lyre?

One of the best ways to understand a particular historical period is by researching how
people lived during a historical time frame. This project ‘Everyday History’ is an attempt at
reconstructing historical experiences and the different ways people lived their lives across
historical ages. By crossing space and time students will see what life was like for ordinary
people—and therefore what life would have been like for most of us if we had been born in a
different era. By researching from archaeological evidences and literary records, students
can glimpse life from past eras and recreate history.

Project Files:

Project description in its entirety will be available on Moodle, and it will be updated
throughout the Semester, according to the Syllabus and/or students’ needs. Students will
need to check the Project section on Moodle regularly.

Project Summary:

Students will chose a topic from the list provided on any historical age/ era and research
about how common people lived and went about their daily lives. Students need to look
beyond kings and queens, battles and wars and major events and seek information on the
life and challenges faced by common people.

Deliverables and Project Management:

This project requires Group work. For Group work in Fall 2021, students are encouraged to
use any online meeting platforms (Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.) to interact with their
selected group members.
Steps for creating student groups:
 Expected number of students per group: 3-5 (Maximum)
 Students can form their own groups and register with the faculty member
 If students fail to create their own groups by Week 5, faculty has the right to assign
students into groups. No further changes will be entertained once the groups are
allotted and finalized on MOODLE

MOODLE (see sample below)

PROJECT DELIVERABLE 2-15% (Assignment 4)

Further to the project plan submitted in PD1, students will research the chosen topic in
detail and create a digital Book with both written text and appropriate images
Students will create a digital book on the topic chosen in PD1.

 The book can include Images/Animation/Video links/Collage/maps/statistics etc.


Detailed explanation as written text should be in the students own words (Plagiarism
policy will apply)
 Students can include fun facts/Crosswords/Self Quiz or other creative elements
 Only information from credible academic sources should be used
 Citations should be included wherever applicable and references should be given in
APA format.

Submission Specifications

Project Deliverable 2 is expected as a digital book. Any software can be used by the student
(WORD/PPT/Publisher/Free available templates from MOODLE) however the final
submission should be uploaded into turnitin as a pdf document.

The digital book (Max. 12-16 pages max.) should show evidence of sound research using
valid historical sources and must consist of the following:
1. Cover Page: Innovative Design, Topic title, Name of University, FALL 2021
2. Inner Page: Course Name, Course Code, Class Section, Names and ID’s of all group
members
3. Table of Contents (with Page Numbers)
4. Introduction (Include why you chose this topic/What is its scope and background)
6. Main body with many subtopics. The name of student who was responsible for each
subtopics should be mentioned
7. Conclusion (What you learnt from your research/Group dynamics and challenges)
8. References (at least 10 references in APA format. This will include references actually
used in PD2)

Submissions and assessments will follow the below policies:
 Plagiarism: In case of plagiarism, you will receive an email to resubmit your work, with the
following rule:
o Resubmission within 24h from email notification: 40% deduction.
o Resubmission within 48h from email notification: 60% deduction.
o Failing to resubmit within two days after notification means that the assessment will be
awarded 0.
 Late Submission: After the submission deadline, students have a maximum 2-days grace period
for late submissions with the following penalty (excluding Fridays):
o first day, within 24h from the deadline, 40% deduction.
o second day, within 48h from the deadline, 60% deduction.
o Failing to submit within two days means that the assessment will be awarded 0.
 Wrong Submission: Students have the full responsibility of:
o submitting the required documents within the deadline
o verifying that the correct files are submitted.
o verifying that the submitted files are not corrupted.
Resubmission of student’s work falls under late submission policy.
