Experiment # 5: Hook's Coupling
Abstract:
In this experiment, we used Hook's Coupling mechanism during the
experiment we input angles in two case of hook's Coupling then we will
use the equation to calculate driven angle. Finally, we will discuss the
result.

2. Introduction:
The Definition of Hook’s Coupling: A universal joint (Hooke's joint) is a joint
or coupling in a rigid rod that allows the rod to "bend" in any direction, and is
commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion. It consists of a pair of
hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross
shaft, finally calculated the output angle, gimbal error and plot graph for the
input angle, output angle and gimbal error.[1]

3. Methodology:
We will take angles from 0 to 3600 , In two cases . Case 1 will be Z-arrangement
and case 2 W-arrangement Fig4. We will use this is equation:
tan φ1
tan φ2= (1.1)
cosα
Where:
φ∧α : angle of rotation

Experiment Procedure:
1- Identify the components of the apparatus.
2- Set deflection angle assigned to you.
3- Change the input angle of the coupling and measure the output
angle.
4- Determine the difference between the two angles and plot the
error and input angle.
5- Compare between experimental and theoretical result.
6- Eliminate the error by adding another coupling.
7- Compare the result.

6. Conclusions:
We learned from this experiment Hook's Coupling and the arrangement, also we
see that correct setup of forks. We used some equation to calculate output angle
and Gimbal error. Finally, Hook's Coupling is very useful to transmit torque
between the shafts.
